Would prefer to see van Assche and Fils go through today; Fils v Michelsen makes a much more interesting SF than Fils v Tien.

Would be fun to see a Fils v Fonseca rematch for the title.

Michelsen wins as an injured/sick Shang retires mid-match in a dead rubber b/c Michelsen had already won the group. Van Assche/Basavareddy is up next, with the winner facing Fonseca in the SF.

Basavareddy takes the first set

On the eve of the tournament, the Mensik-Fonseca matchup was the one that intrigued me the most, but now it has essentially become the most insignificant of this group stage.

Having said that, I remain convinced that the two are the players with the highest potential of the entire new wave of under 20s, or rather, under 22s.

One thing should be emphasized about this edition of the tournament, the placement so postponed compared to previous years lends itself even more to many surprise results.
In previous years, players participated at the end of the season and the only variation could be that of the remaining energy, this year instead it is very likely that the various participants took part after a winter preparation phase, so someone could still have to work off the various and intense workloads.
This is the reason why a collation in mid-late December makes little sense.
I think especially for a Fils who is already close to the world elite

Wow, saw Tien play Fils at the US Open today and although he took a set, I felt like Fils was a much much better player, impressive win today for Tien.

Fonseca is the real deal! He has a very well rounded game. He moves really well & has great energy on the court.

Fonseca were to win this tournament, he would not take away Sinner's record as the youngest winner of the tournament for a few days, but he would do better than that Sinner 2019, that is, winning the tournament by winning all the matches.

And just like Sinner 2019, the feeling is that from this tournament Fonseca's star will shine brighter than ever in the firmament of world tennis.

Honestly, in terms of hype around his name we are even beyond Sinner 2019 and more comparable to Alcaraz 2021.
It is no coincidence that all of Fonseca's matches in the group were placed in the evening session in prime time.
He is without a doubt the young player with the most hype after Alcaraz teenager.

This tournament shows that there’s no difference between top 30 players and challenger level players. All can play. Result just depends on who shows up on that day.

Tien uit tien!
Ja man. Like the kid, plays well. Did well to re-group despite needing the physio in the 4th set, to take it to love and win the final set convincingly too. When he is focused, he times the ball beautifully. Michelson played well at times, but unravelling somewhat.

JF has that huge serve / forehand and lots of time to develop his all court game - very promising. LVA has looked vulnerable to a break in a couple of games, JF getting it done to serve for the 1st set. I hope its a well contested match.

Impressive tournament for Tien. Looks like Fonseca will join him and be the favourite given that he's already beaten him ... But let's see whether he will take home the semi, and then can deal with the pressure in the final.

From here to say that Fonseca will be destined to reach the levels of Sinner or Alcaraz there is a difference, but frankly what he is showing in this tournament goes beyond the Sinner of the 2019 edition.
The 2019 Sinner was scary in the final with De Minaur (number 18 in the world) where he dominated generating a disproportionate amount of winners.
However, previously he did not impress as Fonseca has done so far.
I would say that we are globally more at the levels of the 2021 edition of Alcaraz, with the difference that Alcaraz was already number 32 in the world, while Fonseca is just number 145.

I repeat, vibrations of the predestined.

haven't seen much of Fonseca, will take a look at him tomorrow

are we talking about a clay-court dominant guy who will still do well on other surfaces?

Joe won the 2023 USO juniors. So this will be a repeat matchup of that final which Joe won over Learner in three adult sets, not baby sets.

Fonseca feels indeed like a blend of Alcaraz and Sinner, a new mix of qualities. A precocious player, less athletic than Carlos, shorter than Jannik, but surprisingly complete. His body reminds me of Federer and he slices well.

Some of his points had a Sinnesque quality of suffocating the lighter opposition, combining great movement with heavy weight from both wings and being able to finish points with screamers. However he was attacking much more, similar to Alcaraz and doing well at the net. First data indicates that he will do great in longer rallies, a mark of quality. This doesn't mean that he will be better than one or the other, but he has an excellent base to become a great player on all surfaces.

He might well lose against crafty Tien, but we have a star here.

It’s good to see the over-the-top Joe hype back after his meh rookie season. Joe could turn out to be a major force in four game set tournaments.
