ATP Points and Calculations

Can someone explain how points come off and on for players during the year in the SIMPLEST of terms?

Why does Novak have 500 points coming off next week, when he gained 600 points making the Paris final around this time last year?

How many events played throughout the year/Calendar are actually tallied toward the players ranking? How many of Sinners 22 tournaments appearances actually count toward his ranking? And in what time frame?

Why did the ATP update points in the middle of THIS* week?

I’m pretty sure Djokovic is losing 500 points because he didn’t defend Astana (he won last year and got 500 points). If he doesn’t play Paris, those 600 points are gonna be dropped too. This is how it goes typically.

Players get points when they play tournaments. Points come off exactly 52 weeks later (same time next year).

If you go to the rankings breakdown for a player on atptour.com, you can see exactly when each set of points is supposed to come off. For example, here's Novak Djokovic's: https://www.atptour.com/en/players/novak-djokovic/d643/rankings-breakdown

Last year, he played and won Astana (tournament started october 3rd, ended october 10th 2022, if I'm reading the page right). That was worth 500 points. Those are the points coming off on October 16th.

His 600 Paris points from last year are coming off on November 6th, so in about a month.

19 events count towards points, plus the ATP Finals for a 20th. The breakdown for points that count:
  • One (1) Nitto ATP Finals* (additional event in the ranking breakdown)
  • Four (4) Grand Slams
  • Eight (8) mandatory Masters 1000s
  • Seven ‘Best Other’ (ATP Cup, ATP Masters 1000 Monte Carlo, ATP 500, ATP 250, Challenger, ITF)
Note that top players are are required to compete in the Grand Slams, the eight mandatory masters, and some number of 500-level tournaments (including at least one after the US Open) or else those count as 0. Lower-ranked players who do not get direct entry into all those tournaments can substitute lower-level ones instead, up to the same 19.

For Sinner's ranking breakdown, check out https://www.atptour.com/en/players/jannik-sinner/s0ag/rankings-breakdown .

No idea, I assumed they update them at the same time each week but I haven't been paying attention to that. According to the listed "Drop Dates", it looks like they should always update on Mondays. Maybe they did something weird because of those tournaments in China that start on like Wednesdays or whatever? No idea.

Since @Max G. gave you answers on everything except this, I'll do it:

This week, the ATP board has decided they will update the ATP list on october 5th on thursday for this week, not like they do it always on mondays. The reason for that was because they were waiting for tournaments in Beijing and Astana to end.

This happens also when the Grand Slam tournaments are played. Instead of first next monday, the ATP updates the list on second monday, because Grand Slam tournaments last for 2 weeks.

Astana is a 250? Why would he get 500 points?!
Well, last year it was a 500. All the top players were there.

Honestly I didn’t know it was a 250 this year, thought it was still a 500. Couldn’t understand why a single top 10 player wouldn’t go, draw seemed very weak.

Now I know lol.

Yes, they waited for Beijing and Astana to end before updating the rankings

Officially it's on the books as of Oct 2 (Monday), even though they were updated on Oct 4 (Wednesday). The points will drop in 52 weeks from Oct 2, 2023, which will be Sep 30, 2024

Astana has always been a 250. They made an exception last year to replace Beijing, it was held the same week as Tokyo (won by Fritz). The Semifinals were Djokovic/Medvedev and Rublev/Tsitsipas (all 4 semifinalists were ranked top-6 at the time), so it looked more like a 1000 than a 250 tbh...

Djokovic also won Tel-Aviv last year, a week after Astana... so he's set to lose 250 more points before Bercy.

Yes it did look quite top heavy, as did Beijing this year. Alcaraz was also in Astana last year as top seed no?

Didn’t his 250 points from Tel Aviv already drop? I’m 99% sure it was played before Astana last year.

This is also what I don't get, Tel Aviv is being pushed this year by almost a month but Novaks points from the tourney win are being removed this week? It's being stated in the current ranking points to drop... idk
