EDITORIAL COMMENT

This exercise hopefully brings to light the near complete mismanagement of the ATP. A tough job: they have made the ATP almost completely irrelevant to core fans! Other than pro players themselves, do you think anyone can ace this quiz? And more importantly do you think anyone cares? Sadly, this travesty is repeated for much of the season.

#1 Federer, also understanding that most of the tour mean nothing, has played in one of them.

I actually nailed all of the questions in my head, except for the winners of Sydney and Adelaide, which I couldn't remember.

The ATP hasn't "mismanaged" anything. They could pour a billion dollars into marketing, and STILL nobody in the world would care who won anything but the slams and the YEC. (Nobody in the CIVILIZED world would care who won anything but the USO and Wimbledon.)

If they were smart, they'd do away with everything but Masters and slams, and they'd heavily re-work the Masters tournaments to allow 2 or 3 as legit tuneups for each slam. Let the guys with actual talent fill up the rest of their schedule with profitable exhibitions, and for the love of god, flush doubles and the Davis Cup down the toilet once and for all. Nobody watches that god-awful crap.

And how do you propose for one to achieve rankings in order to enter tournaments such as Masters and Grand Slams. Tennis is all about hierarchy and fluidity. You can be hot one year, and not the other year.

Nevertheless, they should re-work the Masters' system by getting rid of sponsor's naming the tournament. Which sounds better Indian Wells or Pacific Life Open? And spread out the Masters so that Australian Open and Wimbledon have at least one Masters preceding it -- it would be nice to see Queen's giving Masters status.

I got them all right, expect for the doubles question (then again who cares about tennis). Still, I don't think there are many people out there who follow tennis as closely as me (excluding the people on this forum)

Judging by some of the posts here, a number of people on this forum don't follow men's tennis that closely either. There are a LOT of people who play and don't watch.

Marc Tressard, did you make up this quiz or does it come from a blog or article? If so, could you provide a link to the original source please. Thanks.

I could post a similar "quiz" on a golf fan website and I bet few people could remember the winners of each tournament each week. Yet, golf is alive and well. Loaded with prize money and rabid fans.

Lets try this same quiz with Major League Baseball in June. Who won some particular game in April sort of thing. How many would get it right? Yet, stadiums are full and revenue is high.

The only US sport this would work for is football (people remember who won every game weeks 1-18 or whatever and the playoffs. Many people can quote scores).

So tell me, who won the NBA basketball game on Nov. 13 between the Clippers and the Trail Blazers? What was the score? (Did they even play?)

Ok besides the obvious - I do not agree with anything you said here, besides that, this one was interesting for me : Nobody in civilised world ... blah blah ..

You are a piece of work.

As long as Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, etc., still play the Masters Series events, the ATP has no reason to worry. It is what it is, as far as the smaller events.

Exactly. The smaller events are like the minor leagues. They play an important role. Or should we just have majors (not a grand slam unless you win all 4 in the same year) and Master Series events, and they could have qualifying draws with a 1000 people in them?

Well, I don't need to remember any of that info, I know how to look it up at atptennis.com, and I'm sure they appreciate the page hits.

If all of those events were televised, I would probably know the answers to all of the questions. I think I did fairly well besides that fact, but I would like to see at least the semi's and final's for just about every ATP event. It's a shame that TC can't cover a bit more. (I'm not really knocking them though, because the coverage they do have is generally pretty good.)

So how did you do?

I think they should spread the events out a little more yes. But that will be really difficult as I am sure they have commitments they must offer to various cities that have established tournaments.
