ATP Ranking Points Breakdown

Can someone explain one curious aspect of the ATP ranking points breakdown please.

Murray played Rotterdam a couple of weeks ago and is now playing Acapulco. Both of these tournaments are 500 tournaments. His points gained in Rotterdam do not count towards his points total and, from what I can see, nor will his Acapulco points. Yes on his ATP profile, he has zero points for 500 tournaments such as Basel, Tokyo and Washington, two of which he clearly did not play as he had just had surgery.

Why doesn't Rotterdam replace one of these as the ATP rules states the best 4 500 tournaments played?

Or am I missing something here?

I think it's because he missed his commitment minimums last year. He needs to meet the minimums this year before the 500s can be counted, which, if this is correct, means his 500s won't count until he plays one after the USO this year.

Maybe I'm not looking at a full schedule but I can't see ANY 500s on Murray's schedule from last year.

Once the minimums are met he might see 1,000+ points jump onto his ranking one week.

Ah, so the points he earns from the 500s now but do not count as yet will count in the future once the zero points from those he did not take part in drop off? If true, then his points could rocket up after the US open when two 500s with zero points drop off to be replaced by the Rotterdam/Acapulco and other 500s he player between now and then.

Seems an odd system though. Why not just count your best 4 no matter when you play them?

In order to play in the WTF, you have to play a minimum number of 250 and 500 level events. You, contractually, must keep your commitment in order to get ATP points.

Murray was injured last year and missed a lot of matches, matches that he committed to previously. Therefore, he's in a deficit now and must make that up, since the ATP point system runs for greater than 12 months.
