ATP Rankings

I think the ATP rankings are based on a points off best 18 events system.

Didn't it used to be 14 events?

Anyone know why they increased the threshold. It just seems to put more emphasis on players who play more tournaments and less emphasis on the quality players who play less events.

I think 14 events per year was enough to meet the needs of the fans and to ensure players aren't forced into position of playing to often for the sake of their rankings.

What do people think?

They probably increased the number to grow the sport. Get more top players to play more tournaments, increase sponsorship, generate more interest etc. That kind of thing.

There weren't any mandatory events back then. Now top players have to enter 4 GS and 9 MS (that's 13 tourneys) so I guess they needed more room in the rankings for the "other" events. I think it doesn't make much of a difference at the top positions, though.
