ATP Swiss Open in Gstaad - No one cares

So no thread has been set up for this tourney. This late clay tournament has been completely ignored not only on TTW but also Tennis TV. Does anybody care?

The Fog and Deliciano are lined up to face off in the top half. RBA, is trying a recent comeback, perhaps to face young Coric. What say you?

(I'm keeping an eye on young Felix....a long shot, but still worth cheering for.)

I have to say that I was disappointed that "Angrey" Rublev was dispatched without a second thought by Berrettini.
We need the Russian currency to dominate!

I personally prefer "geu=shtawd". It sounds solid.
And now that I've seen images, I'd love to go there and see it in person! Gorgeous!
"Welcome back! So, how was Gstaad?"

"Not sure what on earth you're talking about. Do you mean 'Geh-staaht or Geh-shtaaht'?" ;)

The problem is that, for many of us, the clay season has been and gone. Everyone is ready to move on to the North American hardcourt swing now with New York in sight at the end of it.
Most people here are fans of one (or more) of the top players and they usually skip post Wimbledon tournaments including Newport and Atlanta which aren't on clay. The first tournament where some of the top guys show up is Washington DC, even that doesn't get the biggest names. So it's quite slow till Canada. The only tournament I feel bad for is Hamburg. It's such a historic tournament, it deserves better. Madrid should have never replaced it. Monte Carlo, Hamburg, Rome and Roland Garros as the top 4 clay tournaments would have been perfect, all with rich histories.

I blame @Big_Dangerous for not starting this thread in a timely fashion to disgust the likelihood of clay court specialist Feliciano Lopez defending his 2016 title.

Fabuloso Fabio has met the same fate in defending his 2017 title, out in 2R to qualifier Jurgen Zopp.

Hamburg was the unfortunate victim of some underhanded deals between Etienne de Villiers (then head of the ATP), Ion Tiriac (owner of the Madrid tournament) and the Chinese (looking to keep Shanghai in the loop after the WTF went to London).

Not sure Shanghai is relevant bc they were never going to have 4 clay masters. Actually wanted 2, but gave in to MC and made it a non mandatory 1000 (essentially a 500 with extra points).

How come essentially 500?
Why should all masters be mandatory?
Not all 500 and 250 are.
Whats wrong with loosen up the system a little?

8 masters are mandatory. 1 is not. Its points go together with "best other".

I'd actually be fine with more non mandatory. Let players choose say 6/12 they want to play in. Would also enable to make some of the bigger 500s into 1000s. But that's not how it works now.

Shanghai stepped into Madrid's place as the 8th Masters 1000 which is played on hardcourt. The ATP wanted to compensate it for losing the WTF to London and to keep the Chinese market sweet. Madrid changed to clay and took over Hamburg's spot as one of the 3 clay Masters. Hamburg got bumped down to a 500 event which it has been ever since. The German Tennis Association tried to sue the ATP over this but failed in its attempt.

"G" in German is pronounced "Gay." So in the original German, there is no separate "G" (as in "gay") sound.
The German 'g' is not pronounced "gay," unless you have a Scottish accent. It doesn't have an American "-ay" sound.

I can't think of a better approximation though. Maybe like "gay," but you'd have to pretend the y is not there

Berrettini continues his great week in Guh-staht and is in the finals without dropping a set or a service game in his four matches.

Berrentini will play twice tomorrow. The dubs final follows his singles match with RBA...he and Bracciali face Molchanov/Zelenay

Wake up, people!

Berrettini is putting on a show on serve with 13 aces in the tiebreaker first set he won 11-9.

Still hasn't dropped serve or a set the entire week.

Matteo wins his first ATP level title without dropping serve or a set. Today he played a seasoned pro with titles on all three surfaces and both indoor and outdoor yet he dispatched Señor Bautista Agut 7-6(9) 6-4 without facing one BP and lost on average just a sliver over one point per service game.

Maiden final, maiden title? Fugettaboutit! I got this!

The guy has game and it translates to HC so watch for him as we head to USO.

Congrats to Berrettini on winning his maiden ATP title. He had never before even reached the quarter-finals of an ATP event! Italian players seem to be strutting their stuff this sesson. Forza Italia!!
I had a look at his previous results...they were nondescript to say the least. Strange the way players out of nowhere just string it together for a week and play like they're top 10.
