IF the top 3 play their best tennis then only the current World No. 51 Del Potro is the only person I think who could win a GS only if he is playing his best tennis like he did in 2009.

Murray and Soderling can also do it.

Yes, but they would have to play lights out tennis. I would say that the following can win a slam but a lot has to go their way.

4- Robin Soderling: He can do it, perhaps in Paris but would have to play lights out and patient tennis to win a slam.

5-Andy Murray: Has the talent to do i, but lacks the maturity and mental toughness to play at his best in a GS final.

20-Marin Cilic: IMO, he has amazing talent but hasnt been able to put it together. Again, mental toughness needs to improve. Also, he lacks conditioning to go all the way in slams.

There's also Del Potro....

Roddick could still win Wimbledon, and Tsonga can win any grand slam if he pulls his head out of his ass. Other than that, the rest of the field sucks.

7 cans of Whup-ass in anyone's bag?

Ivo at Wimby? Another tall Croat had his dream come true when least expected. If he can close in less than 5 sets, he is the ultimate wildcard for even the best at their best. Kinda like Edberg losing to Stich one year without dropping serve the whole match. BTW, I know he's not 4-20 but he deserves mention. Soderling at RG? He is a finalist two years running and has opened the year fairly well. A cold Paris fortnight could boost his chances.

I don't even think Djokovic would win any grand slams if Federer and Nadal were playing their very best tennis. I consider Djokovic's win streak to be an effect of the poor playing from the rest of the top 10.

OP started the same thread in the match results forum as well for some reason.

Anyway this is what I posted there:

What do you mean by their best?

If you mean "as well as they have ever played", then no one except for Fed can win AO, USO, WO, and no one except for Rafa can win FO.

If you mean as "well as they can play given their current ability", then the only other person I think can win is Delpo if he goes on a hot streak for USO. The other contenders:

Sod at FO - but he does not beat Nadal at FO if Rafa is playing his best
Murray at USO, AO - but he does not beat any of the top three if they are playing their best

which in fact is true, all the top tenners other than Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have been really poor after Australia, 4 out of 10 are out already in Miami

Imo, If the top three play their best then only #1 and #3 have a chance to win a slam this year. Nadal at FO, Federer at USO, and one of the two at Wimbledon - leaning towards Federer still there imo.

I forgot some things:

No matter how well Federer and Nadal play, Raonic will beat them at Wimbledon, the Championships any day, any time, any place. He is the undisputed GOAT

No matter how well Nadal plays, he will fall to Dolgolopov at Roland Garros. Dolgolopov has just been toying with his opponents up till then, he is saving his strength.

Donald Young will bring America glory in the nation's first American male slam winner in a decade. Watch out folks, he will bring America greatness. His proving achievement? Beating Andy Murray outside of a slam final!

Watching Del Potro play Soderling right now, I would say that it's the Argentine who will prove to pose the biggest threat to the top 3.

This is a great point. Of course anyone can beat Murray in a slam final, but to beat him in an early round of a 1000 event is a true accomplishment.

One cannot help but conclude that Young and Bogie are destined for slam greatness!
