Defending champion Gaston Gaudio made a smooth transition to the Latin American claycourt swing Monday, defeating Chilean Felipe Parada 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round of the Movistar Open in Viña del Mar.....

Day One was a good one for the qualifiers, with Argentine Gustavo Marcaccio upsetting Peru's Luis Horna 7-6, 0-6, 6-2 and Spaniard Carlos Cuadrado defeating German Tomas Behrend 7-5, 6-0. And Spanish lucky loser Daniel Gimeno-Traver (who replaced Fernando Vicente) stunned fourth seed Agustin Calleri 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Third seed Jose Acasuso became the first man through to the Vina del Mar title match, as he defeated Spaniard Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo 6-2, 6-4 to begin semifinal play on Saturday.

The Argentine broke Ramirez-Hidalgo to go up 3-2 in the second set and succeeded in holding serve to earn his seventh career trip to an ATP-level final. His last final appearance resulted in a 6-3, 6-0 title-win over Russian Igor Andreev at the 2004 Bucharest tournament.

VAMOOOSSS CHUCHOOOO!!! :D

How well did Juan Martin del Potro do in this tournament? For a seventeen year old who is 6'5", he's got the build to be good.

Vamos indeed. The final could be quite interesting, though disappointed at Gaudio's result.

He beat Albert Portas in the first round, but lost to Fernando Gonzalez in the second.

Third seed Jose Acasuso became the first player to win the singles and doubles titles at the same ATP event in 2006 when he defeated hometown hero Nicolas Massu 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Movistar Open in Vina del Mar on Sunday.

Acasuso claimed his third title from his seventh ATP final (all on clay) while Massu slipped to a 5-6 record in career finals.

En route to the title Acasuso dropped just one set - to surprise quarterfinalist, Czech doubles star Leos Friedl.

Acasuso is the fifth Latin American player in the past seven years to win the Vina del Mar title.

Nice to see someone touting JMDP in Feb 2006, three and a half years before his US Open title.

Interesting that he was 6'5" then. I think he's 6'7" now. Those extra two inches really hurt his mobility. (He's officially 6'6", but I think Gilbert is right to call yahtzee on that one).
