Strange, but Rio's field is the worst, even thou its 500 tournament. Prolly one of the worst this year, only Washington or Hamburg could be worse.

I dont find it strange at all. Its not clay season. These tournaments are far away from where most of the tour lives. The South American swing is sort of a joke to be honest. Acapulco absolutely did the right thing going to hard court years back. They have great draws now.

But for guys like Cameron Norrie, playing South America swing is a smart decision, Norrie is in the final of Argentina and seeded #2 in Rio. It would be much harder if he plays hard court in Europe or Middle East, easy points in South America.

Seems to be a lot of Golden Swing bashing in this thread but for those with faulty memory storage, here is definitive proof why we need red clay in February:

“The Lion” must have gotten a splinter in his paw to cause retirement after a TB loss in the first set vs Androcles Kubler in Doha.

Wonder if van rijthoven is hurt. Isn't playing in main draw or challenger this week. BTW the challenger draws are not bad this week. Especially Mexico. No.1 seed is mannarino

Alcaraz will be tied with Egg if he wins Rio de Janeiro but Egg stays at one at least for a week cuz he won more points in majors. 5,820 vs 5,090

I think it's time for Retirement in regards of Verdasco, it's a shame but I think the years have caught up to him.

Thiem fought really hard to get out of backhand jail in that 2-5 point but the dropshot attempt was a bit of a bailout...didn't pay off.

Another early loss, although Monteiro maybe a tricky opponent who had the entire crowd behind him

Is Cuevas coaching Jarry? It looked like him in the stands, but it wasn’t a focused camera shot.

Everyone is waiting for Dubai! But Doha has a stellar lineup for a 250 event
My guy didn't play. But at least Cressy got through. Hopefully he can get a title. These time differences in tournaments makes it very hard to focus. I guess weeks like this you really notice what a grind it must be. Same guys every week. Hungry AF. Usually one or two locals looking to take a scalp.

I'm thinking of Sinner. Guy wins a title. Then reaches a final that goes three grueling sets. Now here he is round one facing some hungry player.

Sinner has three days off between Rotterdam and his first match, which very well may be a rematch with Fils. The teen plays Safiullin on Wednesday so there’s no day off for that winner.

WTA score line, no?

Meanwhile, descending Botic is on the verge of losing to Alexandre Muller in straight sets. Tallon needs to advance and win the title in Doha to pass Botic in the rankings and reach #1 Dutchman status. He has narrowed the gap between them very steadily this season.

The Dutch Tallon wasn’t strong enough to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Can he regain the necessary strength to grab it back?

Where is the separate thread for the Murray - Zverev match starting soon?
I am kind of offended.
And no, I am very lazy to create match threads.

Looks like French 18-year-old upstart Arthur Fils who made the semis in Metz a couple weeks ago (losing to Sinner) will have a rematch with Sinner in Marseille. Expecting Sinner to win, but a nice opportunity for Fils to see what he can do differently (or not do) against a player of that caliber. He lost 7-5, 6-2 in Metz, and I think had a couple of set points or break points to serve for the set before Sinner took over.

The mighty elite player has just recovered from a career threatening injury and hasn’t played much until recently. I seriously doubt he will ever be back to his former level. It takes many years to get the confidence back after such injuries.

Fair enough.. i thought he was pass that. Saw him play much better recently.

To make things fairer, I propose that players losing to Murray in grueling first or second round matches should be given extra money if Murray loses the next match.
