Had the damn Italian commentary on so I couldn't really hear the exchange, but it seemed to me the umpiress... didn't know the rule? Did she say something like "the racket touched the net after he hit the ball"??? Obviously if the racket touches the net before the ball bounces TWICE, it's Munar's point. The TV director didn't seem to know the rule either as they kept showing the close-up replay of the racket, which is obviously meaningless unless you can also see the ball.
The umpire made the right call. The second bounce is irrelevant after the ball passed Munar and it's clear Munar didn't make a play for it. The play was dead before the second bounce and before the racquet touches the net. To make this easier to understand, if a smash hit the ground and goes over the wimbledon wall where the second bounce wasn't seen, is there a second bounce? Same thing. The play was dead the moment the opponent can't or won't make a play for it. The umpire doesn't need to wait for the second bounce if it's clear that the player can't possibly make a play on the ball.

I'm sorry but you are absolutely wrong. Of course Munar wasn't ever gonna get to that ball - neither was Nadal in that famous 2013 RG semifinal - but that has absolutely nothing to do with the rule. The ball is in play until it bounces twice or exits the court. Period.

Besides, the umpire was clearly confused and/or unaware of the rule, as she initially stated "it touched the net after he hit it", as can be seen from the video.

Most importantly, why are we still talking about this?

Fritz is killing Fucsovics. Taylor is 13-1 at IW the last three years and no one is giving him a chance:)
it’s not even 11pm on NYE and you’re popping the champagne cork. You overstated his win streak as 12 when it was 8, Hyper Guy. Celebrate when he crosses the finish line.

Lol. Popping the cork? What’s happened to fucovics ?
One-break margin in both sets. Good that Fritz won in straights and got a level from his opponent that better prepares him for QF/SF and final opponents that will be tougher as the week goes along. Never predicted Fucs would win, only that he was a step up from bumbling Baez.

Here, let me bump one of my old threads to prove to you that you’re engaged in preaching to the choir. You will get a mentioned alert in a minute. Note the time stamp on the OP and get back with me when you’re more pleasant to deal with.

I just find it funny that a guy who won last year and made the semis the year before and everyone is ignoring him

Is play suspended?
Two ATP matches are to be started 20 minutes from now. It’s a Greek crowbar session of three intriguing matchups that will result in the men being separated from the boys: Alcaraz vs Draper (Spanish Armada 2.0), Paul vs FAA (NA border war) and the late fixture of really lean youth Sinner vs much thicker veteran Wawrinka.

I honestly think Paul is just better than Felix at this point in time. He’s more reliable, has a much better BH, better defender. FAA has a higher peak potential but this doesn’t feel fluky. Feels like the superior player being superior.

No idea, did you see how he went down on that break point, as Wawrinka's return incredibly landed long? Maybe the foot? (he did plant it awkwardly a few times)
Yeah I did see. Wonder if he’s overtraining. Cause it’s actually affecting his ability to place a first serve in

Wow, Felix had no business winning that match.

Down 0-40 on serve at 5-6 in the 3rd and managing to win the next five points, and then down 3-6 in the final tiebreak and then winning the next five points again. Crazy.
A bit of a choke job by Tommy.. Especially with the tiebreak lead.

6 match points saved by Felix and he converts his first
FAA is NextGen Muzziah, never winning nice and easy, instead winning nice and rough. The 2R win vs Martinez has a deceiving straight set score line due to a come from behind first set that featured double digit blown BPs. Tonight, it was MPs saved.

Viewing not recommended if blood pressure is an issue.

Very interesting quarter finals are coming. Some illustrious names will not be there, but there are some good players and 3 of the 4 matches are very evenly matched a priori.

Norrie vs Tiafoe. Cameron does not have an attractive style of play but he is a solid guy, tough, fighter, who trusts himself a lot. Two or three years ago he started making a bit of a grandiose, "I want to be number one" kind of statement. We all laughed at him, but here he is, a consolidated top 15 player for the last two years and winner of this very tournament in 2021. He will face the American Tiafoe, who is always a top performer in his home country. I predict 3 sets... and I bet for Frances.

Medvedev vs Davidovich. Perhaps the most unpredictable match of all. Although under normal circumstances Daniil would be the clear favourite, it remains to be seen how is that ankle that was sprained yesterday. In addition, on a slow hard court with high bounce and against Davidovich, who performs wonderfully in these conditions... I'll take my chances and say that the player from Malaga wins in 3 sets.

Alcaraz vs FAA. Despite the 3-0 in the h2h in favour of Felix, this week the Spaniard is untreatable while the Canadian has shown many signs of weakness and suffered against theoretically inferior opponents. Today Carlitos puts the 3-1 in the particular head to head for sure.

Fritz vs Sinner. Possibly the star match of the day, the reigning champion of the tournament and best American player at the moment against one of the great promises of tennis. Precisely, last year Taylor beat Jannik here 6-4, 6-3 in their only confrontation until then. Will the Italian get his revenge?
