Play has begun at the northern twin Euroclay 250 in the lovely seaside city on the Baltic. Defending champion David Ferrer is in the 28-man field as the #7 seed (plays qualifier Kolar 1R). Top seed is The Dark Helmet Diego Schwartzman. The other seeds receiving 1R byes are #2 PCB, #3 Fabio Fognini ( @Red Rick !) and #4 Reeshard Gas-K.

One seed (#6 Leo Mayer) has already bitten the red Swedish dust, upset by Matteo Berrettini. Two WCs have played each other 1R and Norwegian teen Casper Ruud advanced with a third set bagel comeback.

Discuss or disgust as you wish.

Another teen WC through to 2R as favorite son Mikael Ymer beat Istomin 3&3.

What say you about teenage success in the geriatric ward, @Meles ???

Teen qualifier Moutet was rolling pinned into twin breadsticks by Melzer the Younger in another fedresque sub-hour mismatch.

Defending champion Señor Smoke got through a rain-delayed 1R win in straight sets over qualifier Kolar. His 2R match will be an interesting contrast of ages pitting the 36-year-old vs 19-year-old WC Casper Ruud.

Laaksonen is a set away from QFs as a LL. Is he gonna be the next to excel from that kind of luck...Rublev and Leo Mayer in '17 and Cecchinato earlier this year???

Laaksonen cruised past Berrettini 2&2 and plays a QF versus the winner of #1 Schweddy Diego/Bolelli, on court now.

Dark Helmet is struggling on serve and could not close at 5-3 vs Bolelli. Back on serve now. Bolelli has much better numbers on 1st serve points so get it in! Simple, Simone!

Bolelli is the midget killer, 6&3! The #1 seed exits and the top quarter is to be won by a qualifier or a LL.

Cue up Spaceballs!:

Seems like with these clay 250’s, some guy will have a good year and win 2-3 of them. Usually also make Roland Garros round of 16. Then drop off and return to being average dirtballer. This year Ramos is on the drop off year

The Battle of Iberia going on now as seeded Spaniard Hot Sauce looks to defeat Portuguese Pedro Sousa. On serve early, 2-2 without break opportunities yet.

Cecchinato fits that bill and more this year. Both he and ARV have possibly difficult 2R matches later today in Umag (versus Vesely and Lajovic respectively).

Hot Sauce with the break and hold to lead 5-2 first set. Sousa holds to 3-5. Nando trying to serve it out now and succeeds, 6-3.

It's a breakfest in the second set but Hot Sauce breaks betterer with Sousa failing to hold all three service games so far, down 1-4.

The breakfest second set and match concluded at 6-3 6-2 with Sousa failing to hold once in four service games during the second set.

'Nando will play the winner of #2 PCB vs Monteiro, on court now.

#2 PCB avoided an upset similar to top seed Diego's demise by easily beating Monteiro.

Two of the four QFs on Friday are set:

(Q) Bolelli vs (LL) Laaksonen is the top QF.

#5 Verdasco vs #2 PCB is the bottom quarter.

Each of the 4 R16 Thursday matches feature a seed and there are two teen WCs among their opponents:

#4 R Gasquet (FRA) vs G Melzer (AUT)

#7 D Ferrer (ESP) vs WC C Ruud (NOR)

#8 J Millman (AUS) vs F Delbonis (ARG)

#3 F Fognini (ITA) vs WC M Ymer (SWE)

Ymer injured his left leg after a misstep/slip, has trouble walking even, and his best shot, the backhand, is visibly compromised. As expected, trainer comes on at changeover. Still on serve, 3–2 Fog.

Oh dear, judging by the treatment the issue is the hip, which has already sidelined the teenager for much of his brief career…

edit: and it fell apart from thereon. 6–2 Fog.

:(

Delbonis yielded two millimeters to Millman but took back four of them to twin 6-4 sets and is a QFist to face Fabulous Fabio.

Next up is The Ghost vs Señor Smoke.

I get the feeling there's some horrible choking happening from Melzer here. Can't see it but he just lost a game where he had 5 break points...

Gas-K makes Melzer take the gas 1-6 6-3 6-1 despite 12 BP opportunities for the Austrian in the last 6 return games, all saved by Reeshard.

QFs are set and unless Gas-K comes through, the top half finalist will be a WC, a LL or a qualifier.

The bottom half features three seeds and a DE veteran clay court specialist.

Casper Ruud and Dickie Gasquet are warming up right now, gettin' ready to get it on in the South Swedish sun.

#Exciting

Positive start from Ruud, still on serve with 3–2.

Gasquet, tactically astute like any French tennis player, is bravely feeding the Ruud forehand over and over again.
