This is a reason why we see greatness in Holger. The commentators showed a graphic that in MC, Rune was standing inside the baseline on 38% of rally balls. In contrast, Sinner was at 14% and Tsitsipas at 18%. That's another indication of his talent and attacking mindset.
I agree 100%

In tiebreak we see his ceiling. In the statistic of his placement we see his aggression and all court game.

That's the talent and entertainment we both see in him.

Watching the replay of the Rune match and him giving his mom a hard time for being on her phone and not watching is a new classic.

I thought he was gesturing her to stop vaping which she's doing all the time in his box, I didn't realize she was also on her phone. I think they literally rehearse what new drama they're going to do every match to get attention.

Turns out I was wrong! I keep thinking Zed is getting back to his best, and then there's some result like this.
You shouldn’t feel sorry. Fear is a strong feeling. Zverev was obviously afraid of meeting Rune again after the total humiliation two years ago in Munich. I understand that.

I could have done without the whining about the weather, though. I guess he was just too intimidated.

Struff through to play Rune in the semi. A pretty busy day for Struff - the completion of the match against FAA (he didn´t waste much energy there), the match against the brat, and he has to play the doubles semi as well.

Glad for Jan. One can trust him to do something like this once in a while. Lost respect for FAA during 2023 Laver Cup when he showed no respect for Monfils.

Wow, Sinner might actually win RG this year.

Zverev and Rune were awful this week. Tsitsipas might be a problem, but he has not played well in a GS for a while, Nadal and Djokovic clearly showing their age and Alcaraz injured.

Rune was insanely disappointing today, as well as Struff might have played…

I doubt it very much. This whole team is still oozing with entitlement
It's tough to be entitled when you're bageled in Miami and then again in Munich. He'll come up with some lame excuse ("sorry, but I had food poisoning from a bad Schnitzel"), instead of just congratulating Struff for a dominating performance.

He still has 1170 points to defend on the clay. If Holger bombs out in Madrid, Rome and RG, his ranking will be about 20 in two months.

what puzzles me is that he did not try moonballing as tactic. pulled that of last year in MC against Sinner (and some antics as well)
Struff could still hit through the court, temperature and moist withstanding

He started tanking as soon as he got broken in the 1st set. I guess time to suspend a player in the 800s for match-fixing.

Woke up to watch Rune, but match was already over - has a two-time defending champion ever lost next year in 45 minutes? Rare to see ATP matches in general end well under one hour like this.

What happened? Did he tank? He didn’t even take a medical timeout while losing?

I go and play pickleball and then this? I didn't expect that..

Was Struff this good or did Rune also give up mentally?

Struff played power tennis with very few errors, I certainly never saw him play so big. His level was blistering from first to last. Holger looked deflated and looked at his box with confusion, like he was thinking, "how can I possibly lose to this guy?!" His ego really needs to get a reality check at this point.

Not sure what Holger can do. This slump has now lasted since August of last year and he's playing worse now than he did at 19.

What happened to Rune? Injury? I did not watch the game but it looks like he was destroyed in 45 minutes.
Absolutely no injury, Struff just played lights out, think of Wawrinka on clay when he was at his best. But still, it's Struff, so Rune should have figured out a way to make it close. I was expecting him to junk ball or moon ball him to make him generate all the pace. But he didn't try that. Just embarrassing!

It was a normal match until 2-2 30-40 breakpoint for Rune.. at that moment Struff just turned into an unbeatable monster.. 3 aces and from then on he went on firing missile after missile, 10 games in a row and match over, it was truly impressive.

It was over before Rune could even figure out what injury to fake for a MTO :D .. he actually was a good sport.. when Struff finally missed a forehand he gave thanks to the heavens by raising his hands with a smile.

Honestly.. Struff was unplayable but Rune didn't even ask the question, in days like these when you are totally outgunned you have to try to stay in the rally and not give cheap points away.

not an easy year to be a Rune's fan for sure :(

I dont’t know what to say. He’s so much up and down. It’s not normal for a player to be better at the age of 19 than 20.
He played two great matches against Dimitrov this year and a great match against Djokovic in December. That’s about it for great matches as I remember it since August. To me the best match I have seen him play was against Zverev in 2022 when he was still 18.

A champion wont fold and lose 6-2, 6-0 to an average player even on his best day and in general a champion wont lose as many sets and be in so many tiebreaks. Rune has been in 16 tiebreaks this year. That’s a crazy high amount.

I got my hopes up briefly in December. I thought he had matured and I saw some focus in him and less rollercoaster. I haven’t had high hopes since then. Maybe it’s time to conclude his top level is high enough to beat anybody at their highest level but his average level is going to be a lot lower. Idk.. It happens that a player has extraordinary talent but just can’t maintain a high level for longer periods of time.

It’s tough to be a fan but he will occationally provide very high level tennis and most of his matches will be fun to watch because he often gives a rollercoaster ride. Right now I don’t want to give a prediction for the future and if I did it wouldn’t be overly positive.

Great summation. Notice the Rune fanbase is the only fanbase here to speak honestly about his issues, freely criticize him and not spam every thread. So the fanbase is actually better than the player, which is an odd occurrence.

Me too, but I was really high on having Boris onboard, then all the ridiculous lies about why he left the team along with Luethi. The entire Rune team needed to hire a media coach way back in 2022 when he was winning events. Lying continuously to the public, all the drama, the tanking, the entitlement, the absurd pronouncements from Holger every month ("I am here in Australia to win the AO," "I am going to be playing for the Wimbledon title in 2024,")... all of that needed to have stopped a long time ago. He's almost 21 but still emotionally about 13, which any decent opponent will exploit.

Right now I don’t want to give a prediction for the future and if I did it wouldn’t be overly positive.

Same here. I expect an early exit at RG, followed by his usual excuses.

However, on the bright side, almost every player in tennis history who was top 5 as a teenager went on to become an ATG, except for Aaron Krickstein and Michael Chang, and Chang still won RG. When Holger plays well, he's a truly great player, but he hasn't shown that level in a long time.

Struff certainly is able to deliver in big games, proved to be a big challenge for Raz in last year's Madrid final.
Guess he was even better today?

P.S. I never watch Munich haha
