The final tuneup for USO is underway in steamy North Carolina on the campus of Wake Forest University.

64/six round format with 16 seeds receiving byes.

Top seed is the Incompaireable Benoit. Late entry WCs include #2 Denis Shapovalov and #10 Frances Tiafoe.

Two veterans Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych struggling through injury woes also received WCs

Much discuss, less disgust.

This Lee Duck-hee guy is apparently completely deaf and he just won a match on the ATP Tour. As someone who's also deaf (I have cochlear implants to enable hearing so it's not the same) I find it cool that he won an ATP-level match despite not even being able to hear the ball.

It's a bit puzzling seeing Murray playing so passively still, while having much less movement bc of hip operation. He needs to turn on the muryGOAT of 2013 and start blasting FHs, win or lose.

American Björn double bageled the Israeli Amir Weintraub, a veteran Futures/Challenger grinder who somehow was able to get in main draw on a protected ranking of #249.

Not a good look for this tournament.

Watched the entire first set of the Muzz-Tennys match. Andy's movement has declined terribly and he seems to have little leverage or spring at the net.

As a long time Murray fan - he needs to retire right now from singles - his movement is terrible and his speed is gone forever. He’s a great champion and every great champion knows when enough is enough

It's not like boxing where you need to get out before you get too old. He played two tight sets against an ATP 73. He is enjoying the journey, and pain free, but is already building life outside the tennis arena. I bet he will call it quits if he feels he will injure his hip. But I can understand him wanting to see if there is still a change, for some last hurrah, if nothing else. I guess his best game was based on running everything down, and he just does not have that now. But I can definitely see him being back to, say, top 30 level, so he might do well in some tournament next year.

It definitely had some good moments and some bad moments. A bit more mental toughness and he could have won it in straights. I'm enjoying seeing him back one match at a time - hopefully he starts putting together a few wins here and there!

He said afterwards that he had no pain, which is excellent news of course, but that he felt tired which is hardly surprising given that he hasn't been able yet to train like he formerly did and so is far from the fitness levels he enjoyed at his peak. As he himself said, it's going to take time. Nevertheless that first set was very tight and could have gone either way. Second set was very close too so it's not like he's getting destroyed 0 and 1 or 1 and 2. He looks like he's getting closer so, fingers crossed, he'll soon fail so well he will actually start winning again.

Andy showed good fight in the second to come back from two breaks down in the second with an immediate break back and then breaking to level the match at 5-5. By then, the fatigue probably took over to surrender the rebreak and eventually the match.

The fact that he can play as well as he did after back and hip surgery is amazing. So, kudos to Murray as a man and as an athlete for showing so much courage to fight in order to play the game he loves. The big question is: can he actually train hard enough in order to reach the level he once had? But, he's gone through so much, and so I can't help but respect him for his journey. Good luck, Sir Murray!

Medvedev won 2018 Winston-Salem and got 250 pts.

It seems his total pts next week will be deducted by 70, from 4195 to 4125.
Why 70?

It’s probably due to the 250/500+ mix formula they use where they drop a 250 result in favor of his best result at a higher points tournament. A -70 would seem to indicate getting 180 points elsewhere (SF at a 500 or a QF at a M1K).

He has a tournament worth 180 points to replace it with. Only the top 18/19 tourney scores count, with some very specific ones mandatory. If you play 25 in a season, a dropped score can be made up at one of these other tournaments.

You left out Gunneswaran, who has a 1-0 h2h vs Paire and is imo about to beat him again, right now. I vote Gunneswaran for champion!

Nothing against Paire, but Gunneswaran is, like myself, brown. Not often we see someone who looks like us doing well in professional sports. I think both genetics and culture stack the odds against us, but I may just be pessimistic with my views.

I had kept my eye on Nagal. What ever happened with him? I see he's won his qualifying match with US Open. And while he just turned 22, I had hoped he'd have had more of a breakthrough by now.

The Package had to play two matches today and won both to advance to 3R.

Zoom Zoom is in the middle of his second match but losing to Sonego.

Russian Currency also has double duty after winning earlier. He plays ARV.

Nice first set (6-2) for Shapo over Sandgren. He won more than 50% of return points. Service games were clean with just 1 BP (saved) and 2 DFs.

Agree. Denis was looking good in the first set. Some good chip returns. The usual errors, but they weren't by a big margin and he remained focus.
