The thing is, how he used to play still won him 81 straight matches on clay. And that style would still make him unbeatable against anyone even today. He was a defensive moonballer. He would play 15+ shot rallies or however long it took until he could let a forehand loose.
And credit to him, he's evolved. He's more openly aggressive now, I don't think anyone who seriously watches tennis would describe him a defensive grinder anymore. But that doesn't change what he used to be just because there's a video with some occasional flashy forehands from 10 years ago.
Well yeah, when I said 'evolve' I didn't actually mean "improve." More of, credit to him for recognizing his developing weaknesses and adjusting his game accordingly. If you gave him a choice between his old legs or his new aggressiveness, I'm pretty sure he's still choosing the one that won him 81 matches. The thing is, how he used to play still won him 81 straight matches on clay. And honestly, his old style would frustrate the heck out of his opponents, that's why I don't see any versions of Fedovic overcoming even young Nadal at RG.
