Auckland is one of my favourite tournaments on the calendar. It has an awesome vibe, and is known as a launching pad for players to go on to Grand Slam and ranking success, like Nadal, Del Potro and Murray.

Unfortunately Del Potro won't be defending his title :(

2010 has a hot field with all top 4 seeds being from Spain.

Seeds are as follows (all inside the world's top 31)...
1. Tommy Robredo
2. David Ferrer
3. Juan Carlos Ferrero
4. Nicolas Almagro
5. Philipp Kohlschreiber
6. Jurgen Melzer
7. Juan Monaco
8. Albert Montanes

Other notable entrants are David Nalbandian, John Isner, Jeremy Chardy, Thomaz Bellucci, and there are rumors that Richard Gasquet may also make it down.

Also the Bryan brothers have entered the doubles.

DP is smart - he shouldn't enter too many small tourneys, now that he's a top player.

I don't think it's him just being smart with his scheduling. Del Potro is now a big time player. Auckland can only offer players $50,000 to $70,000 while those other early January tournaments like Doha can afford ten times that in attendance fees for star players.

Also, the reason some players skip Auckland now is because the surface is still Rebound Ace. The Australian Open recently changed to Plexicushion, so some players don't see Auckland as an ideal warm up considering that the Sydney event, which is on at the same time, uses Plexicusion.
Auckland will be Plexicushion from 2011.

did you already attend this tournament ?

I'd love for Ferrero to win, but I'd peg guys like Chardy, Isner, and Melzer to be the favorites.

Actually, JCF has the game to beat anyone in the draw, IMO. At this point, I mean. In his prime this would be a joke draw (save for prime Nalby).

Let's hope he's inspired for the 2010 season.

He did say he would retire in 2009 if he felt he wasn't a top competitor anymore, and that didn't end up happening. He's clearly feeling competitive and that means he should be a serious contender, especially for a small title like this.

Vamos Juan Carlos!

He couldn't beat a 50% Nadal with his 5 or so match points, and failed epically.... and you call that brilliant?

that wasn't a fail. he was dominant throughout the match, nadal was struggling to even stay in the match. it was nadal's good luck that almagro pulled a muscle.
almagro played till the last point without even retiring you call that a fail

I wonder what happened to Gasquet and Clement. They nominated the Sydney tournament as their first pick, and Auckland as second, but they certainly missed the cut for Sydney, which was around 44 in the rankings.

Either Gasquet got a wild card into Sydney or he failed to beat a final hearing into his drugs test this month, with the world drugs governing body Wada appealing his exoneration.

Does Gasquet participate afterall??

As the REAL rightful chairman of the Nalby club my vote here is obvious.

Yeah I was there this year. It's my 6th favorite tournament of the tour :)

Here are some pix...

Nice reminder of a fun tourny! :) What are the dates this year?

===

Those pics reminded me about Kohli ..... he bowed out with an injury last year ..... I'd like to see him be a real contender this year.

Didnt see Marc Gicquel on the list ..... Was he the one who got so angry at the crowd a couple times? I couldnt blame him ..... As the day wore on toward dark, you could hear the beer bottles being kicked over and rolling around on the ground ..... It's like the tennis is nightclub entertainment in the later hours of the day!!!

That's quite a balancing act you got goin there, malakas!
Chairman of the Nalby Club
Number one wife of Baghy ... er ... or is that Prince Worm?

Qualifying is actually on saturday. I'm in Auckland, so I'll check it out. beautiful weather here.

what's the deal on the bomb scare?

An unattended handbag spotted by stadium staff.

"It was purely precautionary, the management acted quickly, they dealt with it well, there was no threat," says Kerry Watson from the Auckland City police.

The bag belongs to Lynette Bendrey, who left it under her seat as she went for a wander, never thinking it would cause a problem.

I'll root for Ferrero and Nalbandian..

If Ferrero can play sort of tennis that he played in the Summer ( vs Monfils), than he is the favourite for this tournament.

Qualifying draw is really crap. I was going to go today but I don't think it's worth it. Last year it was so much better.

This years qualifying seeds:

1. Paolo Lorenzi
2. Michael Lammer
3. Inigo Cervantes-Huegun
4. Jan Minar
5. Daniel Evans
6. Carlos Poch-gradin
7. Guillermo Olaso
8. Pedro Clar-Rossello

Who are those guys?

The only guy I know is the doper Ivo Minar's brother.

The draw is out. The first round offers one of the most interesting match-ups of the entire line-up: Nalby vs. Kohlschreiber.

Order of play isn't really that great today, only one interesting match...
Bellucci vs Chiudinelli. Maybe Melzer vs Fognini could be ok later.

Of note, for those who grouse about women tennis pros being paid the same as men tennis pros, is the fact that the winner of Auckland Men's Singles is paid $64,000, while the winner of Auckland Women's Singles was paid $37, AND BOTH the men and the women play best 2 out of 3! :|

And Arsenal ladies football team are paid a fraction of their male counterparts - but that's because the revenue generated by womens' football is a fraction of that of the male game. I guess the Auckland womens' event generates about 55% of the revenue generated by the mens' event - hence the disparity.

You may or may not be correct about the reason ... I was simply pointing out the fact of the disparity to those who grouse in the cases where there is equity ......

BTW, did you see Brisbane? How the place was packed for the women's matches? Sooooo ... did the women make as much as the men at Brisbane?
