Austin Texas 4.5 / 5.0 leagues — catch me up?

Haven’t played competitive tennis in about 5 years at this point. I’m at least a 4.5 (my best guess), I was 5.0 when I last played competitively.

My game has always been weird to spectators; at 4.5 I’ll get accused of being a 5.0+ because I have some weapons. But without competing much and with less match play for so long; I can also see the 5.0 and up guys wondering wtf I don’t go play 4.5. I’ve never been able to win a set against a 5.5 - just a few games at best.

Thinking about getting back into USTA and ATL leagues in 2025.

10’years or so ago I went to sectionals in 4.5 leagues. 5 years ago I was a top ranked 5.0 in Texas tournaments (though only played Austin, San Antonio, Houston.)

I haven’t even joined USTA for the last 5 years, let alone keep up with all the changes.

Who here knows enough about the league tennis scene in Austin at this level and is willing catch me up and share your wisdom on the latest/greatest?

Also, looking for opinions if it’s even worth getting back into it vs just hitting around on my own for fun like I’ve been doing.

I mention all the rating stuff because I don’t know if ATL division one is too ambitious or if div 2 is too weak. I also saw a 4.5+ league… didn’t even know that was a thing.

Only interested in singles. Doubles is dead to me. Not old enough to play 40+ yet.

Well ATL is kind of dead now, unfortunately. Just too many USTA leagues competing with it for players and courts. There are a few D1 teams that are still good, but overall the league is not what it was 10 years ago. The 4.5 + league you noticed is a "non advancing" league where they let teams have a 5.0 player or two on the roster but there are no sectionals, etc. and that one is about to be done anyway. The 40+ 4.5 league will start around March and the regular 4.5 league starts after that. The 18 + 4.5 league is very competitive and the singles guys are solid, so you would get lots of good matches if you played. I don't captain an 18+ league but I know lots of captains who are always looking for singles guys. Also, being a top ranked 5.0 based on tournaments doesn't mean that much because there are so few guys who actually play those tournaments (I'm sure you know this) but there are a few 5.0 league teams that have good players. Let me know if you want the contact info for any 4.5 captains.

I started playing ATL for a few season at Division 5 (bottom). This fall our team was placed in Division 4, since there is no 5th division this season. I enjoy ATL and wish there was a way to get more teams involved especially at the 3.0 and 3.5 level.

Hey question for you…. And I promise I don’t mean any offense by it.

I got a functional tennis saber and have played some practice sets with 3.5 and 4.0 level friends. It’s super fun and a really intense workout. The same as me playing a regular match with my regular racket against a 5.0+.

If some guy showed yo to play you at 3.5 in ATL with a training racket…. Would you see it as disrespectful? What if that guy was on your team?

Nope. I've had the privilege of being schooled by much better players via singles and doubles. I'm always up to play with 4.0+ players hoping that something will rub off on me.

To be honest, I'm always surprised much better players even want to hit with me.

I'm in Austin and play in both the ATL and 5.0 USTA teams. The top division in ATL isn't bad for a 4.5 player as most teams will have several players at that level. I think you could get decent singles matches depending on the team. Overall, the ATL is super chill/casual and a good way to meet a few new people. The current season is ending soon but the winter one starts soon after.

Regarding USTA leagues, 4.5 is definitely the most active one compared to 5.0. In 5.0, theres usually only 2-3 teams with all the same players going against each other every year.

Send me a PM with your info if you want to join an ATL team. I'm also down for a hit if you want. I'm up north but don't mind driving a bit.

I’ll follow up. Is 5.0 league still one team stacked that destroys the other 2 every year?

I've only participated the past few years but usually the matches are all pretty close between the 2 teams. The "match" is usually decided by a 3rd set tie breaker between one of the lines. Sometimes, theres a 3rd team that is made up of recent bump ups from 4.5 that are looking to get beat and move back down to 4.5.
