ACT legalises personal cannabis use, becoming first Australian jurisdiction to do so
ABC News - Wednesday, 25 September 2019

The ACT has become the first Australian jurisdiction to legalise the possession, use and cultivation of small amounts of cannabis.

The laws passed the ACT Legislative Assembly this afternoon, allowing possession of up to 50 grams per person and a maximum of four plants per household.

They will come into effect from January 31, 2020.

The legislation conflicts with Commonwealth laws prohibiting the possession of cannabis.

And cannabis users have been warned there are still serious legal risks, including potential jail time, when growing or smoking cannabis in the ACT.

Cannabis remains a prohibited substance under Commonwealth law, and police officers will retain the power to arrest and charge anyone with cannabis under such laws.

It will also be possible for the Commonwealth to overrule the ACT, and seek to have the laws struck out as inconsistent with its own, superior legislation.

More to come.

Good. End of Jan 2020 in ACT will be the perfect time to celebrate Rafa’s #20 and Double Career GS with those products!

Politicians of all sides come together in Canberra to approve things like this as they live there themselves for many weeks of the year among other things as well.

Alcohol and tobacco are, however, far worse.

The point here is not to encourage the use of cannabis, but to decriminalise use.

I think cannabis would be best administered medically for people with epilepsy and those undergoing cancer treatment. Decriminalisation for personal use I think may pose problems for the highway patrol and drug driving. Yes alcohol and smoking are still bad problems in society and adding cannabis may become another thing we have to deal with. GWS v Richmond, who's your pick?

Richmond. It was a long time waiting since the end of the 70’s so once more would be nice.

They now have the trifecta in Canberra, legal weed, porn and fireworks. Some suburbs will now be referred differently:
Red Hill will be Green Hill
Duffy will be Puffy
Deakin will be Peakin.
Growing up in a border town the hoons would go to Canbaz for fireworks for NYE. Whadda the chances of the same happening for choof?

Actually a VERY bad idea masquerading as a new freedom.

My son and I just missed getting killed by an OOC stoned driver.

And yet how exactly did the drug being illegal stop that from happening?

You need to inect a little more clear thinking into your writing.

No one is legalising driving under the influence of any drug.

Dope/pot/marijuana kills relationships, kills personal growth, kills families. This has been proven.

Medically harmful, despite the liberal agitprop. Really, this is a sop tossed out by liberals as a way of getting more votes (at least in America); very few people with experience and understanding support this: consult the American Medical Association for the kind of information used by reasonable and rational adults. Give them circuses and distractions instead of solve hard problems.
