but i agree delpo has looked incredibly sharp all the way through except for the 1st round

I'm telling you that Delpo is getting back to his best. There is no one in the history of the game who can hit the ball as big, from both wings, as Delpo can.

This guy might be the main challenger to Djoko going forward. Nothing you can do when the ball is hit at 100 mph from both wings.

Delpo leads 4-1 and will serve. Looks to book a date for a very juicy QF with Fed..

Delpo is indeed playing some great consistent tennis, should Fed get past Tomic we might be in for one heck of a match.

Delpo will cause big problems whoever he faces early in slams this year. I think Fed is unlucky to have him in the QF.

kohlschreiber is not that far off in terms of quality here hes just losing all the deciding points early in the sets so thats just a picture perfect match progression for delpo.

Well, problem is you could say that for almost every match :)

Delpo just outclassed him today.

If Fed gets past Tomic, he will lose easily to Del Potro. He's got nothing to hurt the big man and will bow out easily. He might take a set because of a lapse in Delpo's game, but grandpa won't make the semis, which might be for the better since it prevents a spanish ****

Yeah. I can't wait. I can sense a 5 setter. And I really think there is upset potential there..

hardly an upset for anyone to lose against delpo when hes fit and brings his a game anyway. but yeah fed vs delpo could be amazing

i still have very fond memories of their 5 setter at RG 09. that was great stuff

I've seen a LOT of this match. I don't think PHK is played all that bad. It's not like he made UFEs. His differential W/UFE is like +2.

Delpo is the one who's made very low UFEs and just taken the play away from the German. Impressive performance IMO.

yeah

all im saying is the match went away from kohlschreiber from the 1st ball. just a slightly better start into any of the sets and this wouldve been a very close match.

not to mention if kohli actually had a forehand

Yes, channel your inner Clarky :)

Joking aside, I think Berdych is just as dangerous for Fed these days, either of those two in the potential QF would have been a danger to him. The only one with whome Fed would have had an easy time in a potential QF match-up is Ferrer.

haha or fish.. seeing as he was his actual QF match here seeding wise +g+

but really saying fed has no weapons agains delpo is one of the stupidest comments in a while. he sure does

much more than nadal for example

Actually I think Berdych is more dangerous to Fed than Delpo is. And it's exactly the reverse for Nadal. That is, Delpo is much more dangerous than Berdych is.

Berdych generally reads Fed's serve better and does better than Delpo on Fed's short slices. I would still favor Fed in a Delpo-Fed match, but it could be close it Delpo plays well..

also these are the conditions that saw the 3, 0 and 0 beatdown fed handed to delpo early in 09 when he was just about to get to full power

i still think fed would be the favorite in a potential QF clash

He's being sarcastic, he's parodying certain Nadal fans. Of course Fed is not without chances even against an inform Delpo.

True about Fish, though he actually was a potential Fed's QF match-up.

So anyone else thinks Delpo will repeat his USO '09 act of taking out Fed and Nadal back to back ? If Delpo does take out Fed, we will have an interesting semi at hand which can be anyone's game.

On the other hand, Fed will be doing a Rafa a huge favor if he takes out this Delpo or tires him out by taking him to five. In a Fed-Rafa semi played at RLA night session, Rafa will go in as the clear favorite against grandpa Fed, who hasn't beaten Rafa in a slam for nearly five years . No matter how close it is, the result will never be in doubt. On the other hand, Rafa-Delpo will not be so predictable.

Let's not go overboard. To win AO, Delpo will have to beat Fed-Nadal-Djoko back to back!! And I think Djoko is probably the worst matchup for Delpo, even if he beats Fed and Nadal.

I didn't say Delpo will beat Djoko and win the whole thing, just talking about his chances of taking out Fed-Nadal back to back which is a realistic possibility.

I agree. Fed is a worse matchup for Delpo than Nadal is. So should he get past Fed, it would mean that he's playing well enough to take care of Nadal in the QF, and should be favored in that match.

But yeah, getting past Djoko in the final is another story. Not likely on this surface IMO..

And this is exactly why Rafa and most of the other players want to go to a two year ranking system. It not only makes it fairer for the player who is injured and is out for a lengthy period of time, it reduces the chances of the best players knocking each other out in earlier rounds of tournaments.

A user did the maths on MTF - Delpo would be ranked around 30 right now, compared to 11, with the 2 year system.

Does the MTF guy know the formula that's been proposed? How much the results from each year are supposed to count? Because I'm sure the players have had the calculations done too and wouldn't be proposing the system if it didn't resolve what they think are problems with the current method.

The formula is irrelevant... Del Potro's point haul was in 2009 and after that he won relatively few points, it's too far back. With the two year ranking it would take him even longer to rid his ranking of the low points total of 2010/2011.

But his points likely wouldn't have been so low in 2011. He wouldn't have been meeting Djokovic in the 3rd round of Roland Garros or Rafa in the 4th round of Wimbledon and he probably easily would be sitting in the top 6 or so right now. Soderling is going to drop another 20 spots in the next couple of weeks. Querry dropped out of the top 100. With injuries becoming so prevalent due to the style of the game being played now, it's something that needs to be addressed.

Since when is a QF considered an early round?

If Delpo would have been ranked 5th, he would have also faced one of the top 4 in the QF.

Also, rafa and most other players?? Who are these players everyone keeps talking about (is this the same overwhelming majority rafa referred to earlier)

A 2 year ranking system has got fail written all over it.

Top 10 players want it, basically. At the WTF there was a speculatory vote, all players voted yes except Fed. It's quite disappointing from them.

I don't find it disappointing. I assume they've all studied the issue quite carefully and played with numbers and different scenarios and have come up with a system that they think will be of the most benefit.

We're all arguing about it without knowing many of the details and the loudest opposition to it has come from people reacting to Rafa talking about it just because it was Rafa.

Of the most benefit to the top players. Someone like Dolgopolov, whose rise to the top 20 was extremely fun to watch, wouldn't be enjoying still languishing in the top 50.

I find it very disappointing that Federer was the only one of them in opposition.

Last comment on the subject from me, since this is the Aussie Open thread ;)

The same way you find it a very good idea because it's Rafa.

You could always make an exception like protected ranking for the injured with seeding protection aswell. Don't need a two year ranking for that.

Andy Murray and Mikhail Kukushkin have taken to the court, let us rise for their national anthems:

Andy Murray - Scotland

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Wouldn't surprise me. Del Potro going all the way AND beating Djokovic in the final would be shocking though.

Federer just gave a great interview on ESPN. lol, he picks the Giants and was at the Patriots/Giants previous Super Bowl.

Slammed every other ball as hard as he could. Didn't have the patience maybe because of the heat.
hmm makes sense i guess. hes not exactly known for being the patient type

ah there goes the only match from the upper half of the draw that i was really looking forward to..

now its pretty much cemented.
4th round djoko beats hewitt in 3

QF djoko beats ferrer in 3, murray beats nishikori in 3

SF djoko beats murray in 3

yay for exciting matches
