He actually does have different solutions these days. Difference is he's not looking for a solution tonight. He's just looking for a ticket home.
I think it's because he's mentally drained... But his default is to just expend more physical and possibly mental energy and hit harder? Makes no sense, when do you learn? He should have practiced different game styles and strategies during the off-season. It can't be that hard to just grind a bit and make Grigor play one more shot. What you're doing is not working. Simple.

We are talking about a big slam match when you come in as a co-favorite.
Novak used to have injuries when he was YOUNG and had medical issues.
Since Novak 2.0 - there has been no tanking in big matches. Novak gives more than 100%.
He actually did this in a match against Thiem himself. Or did you forget about that 3rd set bagel at RG?

LOL!

I thought Thiem was supposed to be the next super consistent ATG that would end the Djokovic/Nadal era. He ain't gonna do that losing to guys like Dimitrov in straight sets the 4th round of hardcourt slams, and getting bageled and/or breadsticked in the process.

Djokovic seeing this lousy performance by Thiem should heal him up real quick.

I can't believe people thought Thiem might be able to take out Rafa at Roland Garros this year. He is not THAT good.

BIGGEST UPSET OF THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN: The #3rd seed and co-favorite to win the Championship is NO MORE.\
Novak's draw opens up completely.

I feel bad for the guy. It’s usually a deep existential pain that causes you to perform like Thiem is. A loss of connection to what you are doing and sense that the outcome doesn’t matter. I agree this isn’t good for tennis but wouldn’t have happened with a crowd there. I’ve seen Thiem compete admirably day in day out for years so let’s cut him some slack.

Thiem is supposed to be a hard worker in the gym. Yet, this is the second Slam in a row where he looks totally fatigued the round after playing a tough match. Meanwhile, we have the Big 3 in their mid-late thirties chugging away in Slams never losing to guys they shouldn’t lose to. What’s going on?
Was Thiem tired? Maybe Dimitrov has a higher peak level at the AO than Thiem and that's it.

From the beginning of the match, you could see by his body language after bad misses tjat something is off with Thiem. Is it an injury, bad day, or something else, who knows. But it was not his day today.

Also, Dimitrov continues to be a bad matchup for Thiem. 5-1 H2H now in favor of Dimitrov, if I got thay right.

That's....not how generations work
Yes in modern sports were the early 30s are still the Current Gen (see basketball with Durant, Curry and LeBron in their 30s still being the best players, and Cristiano and Messi aged 33 winning the Ballon d'Or in football).

Plus, Roddick won his only Slam and was 13 weeks #1 in the pre-Big 3 era, when players like Ferrero (?) could be #1. 2003 was a vacuum.
