The gulf in skill and talent for HC tennis was just obvious. Return of serve, hitting the ball on the rise and changing direction, counter-punching, court positioning etc. Novak is just on another level to Carlos with the predictable bounce and sure footing HC provides, it's no coincidence he's 3-0 against him on HC.

Of course Alcaraz still wasn't far from probably snatching this match, if he took the 2nd set (Novak said himself he probably would have retired) or pushed it to 5. But that's because Novak's an old man in tennis terms.

i think it's a little more than that. Carlos had a problem with mental focus in the sense he got broken twice when he was 40-15 on his own serve. and clearly he lost the plot in sets 2,3 but he got back on track at 3-4 in set4 and made a match out of it. i think his biggest mistake was using a kick serve in night conditions that was not placed well and because of the lower bounce right in Novak's wheelhouse. Didn't his team advise him otherwise? he had decent numbers on his first though his placement wasn't like set 1. plus he had a healthy+10 winner/ue differential though i would like to see what his forced error count was.
