Just finished watching the first men's semi. Super exciting match TB to end it. Bopanna/ebden, now the #1 team, served for the match, got broken, had 3 match points on machac's serve, and couldn't break. They finally got through in the TB. They're going to face another unseeded team, either bolleli and his new partner, or hanfmann and koepfer.

The women's draw was interesting in that the former #1 Czech team of krejcikova/siniakova split and then played each other w their new partners. Krejcikova/siegemund had match points, but ended up losing. Hsieh/mertens are in the final.

The mixed final will be interesting bc I like desirae krawczyk. She's in the final w skupski vs hsieh and Zielinski. Two of the top women's dubs players along w top men's dubs players.

ESPN+ is awesome for watching matches on demand. We pay for it w Hulu and Disney+ bundled.

Good job by Ebden / Bopanna to get through. They are the only remaining seeded pair, playing the Italians Vavassori / Bolelli next.
Bopanna has been a runner up in GS's several times and won a mixed doubles at the FO before. Ebden has won Wimbledon with Purcell, and a Mixed doubles at the AO. I'd like to see them win this title.

Bolelli won the AO with Fognini, and is a seasoned doubles contender.

This slam really favors the teams that are returning well. Balls/courts, whatever, seems to allow upsets and unseeded teams do well. I'm rooting for bopanna/ebden to win one.

I'd like to see hsieh/mertens in the women's and skupski/krawczyk in the mixed.

Interesting the other women's doubles semifinal is being played today. I guess Hsieh only played her semi yesterday so she wouldn't have to play twice today(she's in the mixed final today)

Tonight’s semi-final should be a great match. Leaning Dabrowski and Routleff.

Bopanna/Ebden have done it!

They are the 2024 Australian Open champions.

Bopanna becomes not just the oldest #1 in history but also the oldest slam champion in doubles.

Insane.

If you fail 60 times at Slams, keep trying till you win it the 61st time! Congrats to the man from Coorg on his perseverance and for maintaining top notch doubles skills at his age. He dominated that first set TB to give them the lead and then he and Ebden played solid tennis serving second in the 2nd set to come through. Sweet for Ebden to win his home Slam also.

Ebden has really improved as a doubles player. I remember watching him years ago playing doubles in Davis Cup and he was pretty ordinary. He couldn't put a volley away - he continually volleyed back to the opposition players when he had relatively easy putaways. So great to see his incredible improvement and the wonderful chemistry with Bopanna. Well done boys!!

Very well done to Ebden / Bopanna - superb stuff, winning in straights.

I was hoping Skupski / Krawczyk would win ( great to see the Brit in the final) but Hsieh / Zielinski pipped them at the post, winning 11-9 in the decider.
Hsieh playing the women's final too, with Mertens. Can she win a double title at the AO?

It's truly a great story and I'm happy for Bops, whom I really like.

But on the flip side, it's a terrible indictment on the state of the doubles game.

I mean, Vavassori is a great story too. But he has a backhand like a 4.5 player. And he is now - I believe - the top ranked player in the world under the age of 30....

Yes, is the answer! Congratulations to her & Mertens for winning it, and in straights.
She is now the reigning French Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open women's doubles champion - all with different partners! Wang Xinyu, Barbara Strycova, and now Elise Martens. Hopefully she can win the US Open this year and complete the set as her best result has been SF. Who will she play with?

She is the common denominator. Scary to think that all of this success is after a 18 month long hiatus. A testament to how good she is. And she picked up a mixed slam as well.

The doubles this year was very entertaining, tight matches in every category. I hope the rest of the year follows suit.

Age is just a number guys,,, man, this dude is old. So all you 65 something old guys,,, Don't be afraid to take on those 30 year old 4.5 and 5.0 doubles guys in doubles,, you can beat them even if you are 90 years old

She and Mertens ( who has an excellent doubles record too) are prime contenders for a great season ahead. Is it likely that they'll part way?

I don't think so. Strycova retired, so I assume that's why she played w Wang. Then they lost in the USO, so maybe that's why she partnered Mertens this time. Seems silly to split up now that they won.

In my view. Mertens supplies the "pop' , is a perfect ad court returner and showed superb defensive and athleticism skills during their run. In many ways, she was the difference in their QF and SF victories. And that backhand winning angle at match point in the SF stunned everyone - she saw a slight opening and pulled it off , clean winner...

Elise is a 4x women's doubles major champ. RG is the title she's not won whereas Hsieh has won it a few times now. Perhaps if they stay together they could achieve it this year? With 3/4 of the current majors you have to place Hsieh as favourite with any elite partner such as Elise. Wang seems more singles focussed so I'm not sure if defending the title with Hsieh is even on the cards this year.

It is surprising how infrequent Hsieh gets broken. Even in mixed. I think in all doubles the strategy seems to be "don't hit to Hsieh." So this makes Mertens the perfect partner because she moves very well and is very consistent. She is always choking when serving out matches. Hsieh on the contrary comes up with mind boggling shots when the the situation is do or die.

Hsieh has such superb eye/hand coordination and this allied with the softness of her hands lets her pull off the mind boggling volleys and half volleys she is renowned for. She'd be a nightmare to play against in doubles because she not only gets everything back but does it in such an unconventional and unexpected way. Don't know her string tension but I'm betting it's super low.

I was thinking the same thing as soon as I read your first line: if she doesn't break strings after a year, she must be in the Mannarino tension range. I don't think she knows her tension. How low must it be if she can play w/o knowing she broke a string?
