One of the things that has seemingly changed for Sinner is that he isn't withdrawing during tournaments due to illness the way he was for really two years. That was retarding his rankings progress for certain. I wonder what changes he and his team have made to prevent all those illnesses that were hampering him?

My pre-match thoughts:

1. Sinner is ready. The domination against Novak except for the slight hiccup says everything. Old Sinner would not have thrown that hiccup aside. New Sinner threw it aside brilliantly. And his opening up the court with offspeed balls, PLUS his usually cannons from both sides, AND big serving is a lot for anyone to handle. He's going to be tough to beat.

2. Med must be gassed, but I simply won't not give him a chance. Med matches up well with Sinner (you know what I'm saying, as well as a player can), and even though Sinner has finally beat Med (twice) after going 0-6, their matches are always tough. Med is experienced, cagey, willing to go the distance, willing to try things (e.g., the Medberg points in the last game vs. Hurcazk; the closer return position to start the match). I hope he can recover.

Picking Sinner and even think there's a path to a comfortable Sinner win, but I think Med has the capacity to make it interesting, and an outside chance at pulling out a victory should Sinner, for example, get "slappy" and start piling up the errors, and doesn't serve as well at big times as against Novak. Looking forward to it.

If this is a 5 set match I believe this AO will hold the record for the most 5 sets played in a grand slam 34 currently which is tied with a few slams as the most ever…

Ps - were u a sinner doubter as well vs your man coming into AO 24
I went Djokovic in 5 but I respected sinner and knew he was coming good and improving all the time. I thought Djokovic might just hold him off or sinner lack of GS SF experience might cost him. I was completely wrong though and Sinner is ready for the breakthrough and here to stay. A fabulous player with a massive future.

That’s cool. I like how we can own up to being wrong. It’s great for the sport to see sinner rise and a different final matchup. Novak will be back but this doesn’t hurt after everything he’s won. This day was coming and I just amazed he’s still competing with these young powerhouses now. Djokovic won’t give up though and he will take a well earned rest now.

ATP H2H: 6-3 for Meddy (all at HC)

Their 10th anniversary match and first at a Grand Slam. While Jannik lost only one set on the way to the final, Meddy had to go through 3 five-set matches. Although Meddy leads in H2H, Jannik has won the last three mutual matches and I take him as the favorite. For Jannik, it is the first Grand Slam final, for Meddy the sixth and the first where he will not play with Djokodal.

This could be trouble.. Meddie owns him right now and he will be super determined now he's not playing Novak. He will come out with everything he got even though he's tired. and he knows how to win major finals... whereas for Sinner this is his 1st final and he will be super nervous. and his coach doesn't help either who never even got anywhere close to winning a Major final.

Maybe Sinner should hire Becker for this one match. as Consultant maybe :-D :-D Becker will do it, he needs the money

As much as I would like to see Jannik win on Sunday, I think he will lose in 4.

Medvedev is the nightmare matchup for him. Even though he defeated him the last 3 times, it was always highly contested. This time, Medvedev will have the experience on his side and I believe Sinner will encounter difficulties to keep his nerves, like he did in the tiebreak of today’s match. Also, I don’t think Medvedev will show any sign of being tired, today he was a human wall although he had already played 2 other 5 setters.

So Medvedev in 4 is my guess

I called Sinner in 5 mainly because I didn’t like Novak’s body language and physicality as well as form. In most cases he figures out a way and problem solves during the match plus his opponent eventually drops level etc but this Sinner was red hot coming in, you could see it and unless he buckled under the pressure it was not going to happen. Ditto at Wimby last year. Djokovic was patchy in that final but Raz didn’t buckle.

For me, it’s a 50/50 affair. Both have things going for and against them. Matchup is advantage Medvedev but Sinner has won the last three. Sinner has freshness and less hours advantage. Medvedev has the slam finals experience. I think there is absolutely no favourite here. Match can go either way and it wouldn’t be a surprising result.

Things have changed though. Sinner won last 3 meetings. It’s up to Meddy to change things and reverse that. Sinner has the gameplan and recent edge.
How the heck did Goldie Chainz lose. I saw the first 2 sets and slept. Woke up to see Zedzilla lost. Can't believe it.
Med will be cooked for the final. Sinner should win it. Maybe even easily IMO.

I want Sinner to win but how will he fare on the biggest stage at a slam final?

Medvedev has the experience of winning and losing at Slam finals.

I think Sinner wins in 4 sets, if he wins then I will go hyperbole and say Sinner could become number 1 in 2024.

Medvedev deserves AO title. He will be greatly inspired by a strong-willed victory over Zverev. I think Medvedev will continue to play aggressively against Sinner because he has no other choice after spending so many hours on the court. And when he plays aggressively against Sinner, it ends badly for the Italian. But I don't remember how he played with Sinner in three defeats against him. Medvedev turned out to be stronger physically than I thought. So I believe in his victory.

Anyone know how many or who have won their first slam final?

I hope the answer isn't someone like Thomas Johannson.

i woke up and watched like last 10 min of the match. zverev looked super flat.

said in press conference he caught something after alcaraz match, had a fever...said he basically ran out of gas in the 3rd set and was kind of just hanging on from there.

like i said, didn't see whole match but honestly he seemed like he was being pretty forthright, didn't harp on it but just seemed bummed he couldn't be at his best.

For some reason I just don't like Sinner and Meddy is due for a win. Everything's pointing to a Sinner win but I'd like to see Med get 2 slams I think that's the right number for him and not sure he'll get this good of a look at one again.

Just usual loser excuses. He was good in 3-4 sets, even better than in 1-2 sets.

Conflicted here as I like both. But beating Djokovic at RLA or Rafa at RG needs a handsome reward, so I will be rooting for Sinner. But he is up against a relentless grinder who won’t miss as much as Djokovic did in the semis forcing Sinner to play that extra rally ball or two. Sinner in 5.
Good call all around.

Sinner isn't that player who Med was beating pre Beijing 2023. This Sinner is a human wrecking machine.

Sinner in 4 because right now he is the better player. I actually like both finalists, Sinner and Mad Med, thus I wouldn´t mind the Russian to win, but Sinner needs it more at this stage of his career.

Medvedev does not even deserve to be in the final and is only there since Zverev choked. Sinner in 4.
This kind of argument is as stupid as it gets. After his fight over 5 grueling sets playing the final is hard earned and well deserved. Following your logic Zverev didn´t deserve to reach the semis because Raz made it too easy for him, no?

That´s pretty amazing - almost equivalent to playing two additional matches on the route to the final.
Med admitted to Courier in his on-court interview after the Chainz choke that he was very tired in the third set and his legs were "practically dead." That's why, he said, he started actually coming to net more than usual (which is about twice per match).

I don't think Med's fatigue is going to enter into the final since Sinner is gonna blow him off the court. He's playing some super ball, he deserves this title.

I hope that happens, but will not be surprised if something else does.

Go, Sinner.
