I realized Donald Young isn't playing. Maybe he thought it wasn't worth going to Australia to play qualies...or is he injured?

WC are not given to players who deserve it the most. It's pretty much a "political" issue. Besides the aussies, there's an agreement between Tennis Australia, the USTA and the French Tennis Federation to give a wildcard to their players in the Slams they host, that's why Isner and Mannarino got one. There's also a WC for an asian player since the AO is considered the "The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific" and Istomin got it.
The WC were given before Chennai so Devvarman's performance last week could not be considered.

You do realize Somdev was destroying futures and challengers left and right for quite awhile? You're saying that he didn't deserve it over Istomin? He already showed he could compete with extremely good players (defeating Qurrey, Malisse, and plenty of other guys) before Chennai.

He may not have been eligible. Do you know what the criteria for the Asia/Pacific wildcard are? Does anyone here?
 
I've read that Somdev could get a WC if there is a withdrawal.

He plays another indian in the first round: Prakash Amritraj (who lost in the first round at chennai).

Edit: scheuttler and Kiefer have already withdrawn.

Not sure where you read that, but the information is wrong. Wildcards have nothing to do with withdrawals. He could get one of the lucky loser spots, but he will not get a wildcard.

The 'Asian wildcard' is given to the highest ranked Asian player not already in the direct entry list. http://newsdaily.com/stories/tre5070es-us-tennis-open-wildcards/ So either Somdev was not the highest ranked 'Asian player' or he wasn't considered an "Asian" player by Tennis Australia.

Your argument should not be whether he is better or more deserving than Istomin because it already appears that he is not (or was not on Jan 7 when the WC was announced). You could make a case that he is more deserving than Sam Groth, Carsten Ball, Brydan Klein, or Bernard Tomic, but those are Aussie players and since the AO already gives up 4 of its cards, it was probably not about to give up another one based on one good week.

Read in a newspaper: i rechecked .. it uses past tense, somthing like "there was talk of a possible WC for SDV but a withdrawal was needed for that".

Perhaps the correspondent got confused between WC and LL.

i mean... the newspaper says it was indeed given to the highest ranked asian player, but not that it was the rule. did you read it somewhere else ?

by the way, it's the 3rd time itsomin gets a WC at the AO after 2006 and 2008 !

I don't think you can get a WC into the main draw once you play the qualies.
If there's some withdrawal in the next days the "lucky loser" rule will apply.
By the way Devvarman is in trouble in the 1st round of the qualies, 4-4 in the 3rd set against P.Amritraj.

not a criticism. i for one, hope he makes to the main draw. i hope he plays Federer in the 2nd round or something. and if he upsets roger then i will buy his stock...:)
 
The link refers to Sirriani as "journeyman". I looked that up and it means a sportsplayer who is reliable but not outstanding. I've been hearing this term a lot here, and not been sure what it means.

The above definition does not sound v complimentary. Does it mean "old" ??? Is is not a nice thing to call someone?


edit: reminds me of baggy's comeback last year against Hewitt - although failed, but remarkable.

Journeyman is a UK term. It originally applied to tradesmen (joiners,plumbers etc.) who had several years experience post their apprenticeship. It has latterly become a term for a steady, reliable, but not outstanding older sportsperson.

I want Dancevic to make the main draw, if goes through 2nd round, he'll probably play Mallise, not particularly lucky with the draw :x
 
NOOOO!!! somdev will play andreas beck in the third round qualifying if they both win, those are my two of the three favorite players outside the top 50!!!:cry:

That wouldnt surprise me, so many of the writers who cover tennis lately are not tennis fans, they are sports writers who get assigned to tennis one or two times a year. Very frustrating.

No, I'm not sure. That newspaper article was the only thing I could find last night. I know there were guidelines for the 'Asian' wildcard, certain players from certain countries. I know a few years ago it was a playoff, but I think this year and last year it was just the highest ranked player from the eligible group. I'm still looking for real guidelines, I'll post again if I find them.

Thanks, iirc i had heard it being used for Santoro and maybe Bjorkman, so figured it meant older folk.

(I guess that makes me a journeyman ;-) )
 
Journeymen is used to describe all kinds of players, guys who never made the top 50 but stayed on tour for years (like Justin G.), guys who cracked the top 50 or top 30 once or twice from a few good tournaments and couldn't stay there, all the way to any player that a casual tennis fan can't name. I kind of hate the word actually.

By the way, there is a very good documentary out there called 'The Journeymen' that was filmed a few years ago by two tour players as they were traveling around trying to make a career in tennis. It's available here at TW, I think. I enjoyed it, it was kind of eye opening.
