Australian Open QF: Novak Djokovic vs. Taylor Fritz

Who wins?

Not a relevant response really. I usually don’t bother with Djokovic threads. Someone rolling over the opposition time and again is boring. It’s irrelevant whether the opposition is not good enough. It’s dull. Sport is about competition. Non competitive tennis doesn’t engage people. Who wants to tune into something knowing the end result all the time. It’s not his fault of course. It’s just how it is. The sooner it ends the better.
Would you be satisfied say if Djokovic still won it but had to win back back 5 setters against sinner and alcaraz? Therefore, not the result you wanted but if it’s been an epic of high drama and quality how would you view it?

Djokovic to roll an ankle in the opening game.

Like seriously, bone protruding through the skin, blood everywhere, all ballkids removed from the court due to the health and safety procedures, people fainting in the stands, Djokovic's team mixing up a few blood bags (huddled together to hide what they're doing of course), human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... MASS HYSTERIA!

Fritz will once more show he is incapable of taking advantage of a god given gift, Novak in 3 sets.

Fritz himself has said he has never beaten Nole, so hopefully he can atleast get couple sets off. Djokovic has some fatigue in the Mannarino match, if that flares up then Fritz has a slim chance.

Novak in 3 sets.
Anyone claiming any other result is trolling. It's like betting on David Ferrer over Fed in a Wimbledon match, just stupidity or attention seeking. Fritz is a journeyman compared to Djokovic and has nothing with which to hurt him. Straight sets and no mercy. Happy to see that air head with his "influencer" GF sent packing.

Should players be forced to retire after lets say 31?
No, nor should any of them claim to be the GOAT if they drive up their numbers feasting on weak competition. It's irritating or be repeatedly asked by fans of certain players to validate their very debatable positions regarding their favorite deserving the title. We've had this discussion before. What Djokovic is doing is remarkable. I have him among the best to have ever played and vying for the top spot, but I don't see him as better than other guys who either had more competition, valued different things in tennis than the generations since Sampras, etc.

I hope Djokovic continues winning as long as no one can step up and stop him. I'd love to see how many more years he can be competitive and would love to see 40 something Djokovic out there making deep runs at slams, but I am rooting for someone, or several players, to do that - - - the last decade has been disappointing for those of us waiting for the next ATG to arrive since 2013. It's crazy what Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic have vultured as older players.

If Djokovic gets a huge musle tear during the match and can barely move or hit a forehand, then Fritz should win.
Will he?

I vote for Novak in 4. If Fritz serve really, really good - it may go to 5, but I expect Novak would have killed his legs by then…

Gonna be tough match for Djokovic. I see Fritz as a big threat with his serve and big game. If he is on, wich it seems he is this tournament, he will be trouble.

Djokovic could play Fritz using a toothbrush and would still win, don't think he'd be bothered about the time of match here.
True but it’s 30 degrees heat. He’s lucky it’s just Fritz and not sinner/Alcaraz because Djokovic doesn’t like extreme heat as we seen.

Rafa used to thrive in the hot sunny conditions though.

I am surprised by that. Is Sinner-Rublev a bigger draw than Djokovic-Fritz? I can’t think that Djokovic would have requested Tiley to give him a day match on a hot day.
I guess

Rublev did have a long last match so needs longer to recover,

I guess this shows this side of the draw will play the first SF on Friday. I guess Novak will get used to day conditions more but I don’t think it’s as hot on Friday anyway.

As you say though it shows last year was just a one off. I think most the star players went out early or didn’t play last year which is why Djokovic got night matches. Maybe a little bit making up for the deported things.

This year there’s been no bias though so no one can say that really.

If he can play with same freedom he did against Stefanos then he can really give Novak a tough match although still expect Novak to win in end if he is near his best.

I think Taylor Fritz needs to win first set as once Novak gets a set up he very rarely ever loses am best of 5 match.

Mind you i think it was much hotter and even more humid when they met in Q/F of Us Open last September. It affected both of them but Novak handled it pretty well in the end. Although from memory the roof was party closed due to heat

How did Fritz tear Novak’s abdomen three years ago? Rinse and repeat.
Same scenario 3 tears ago. Agreed.
But Fritz tear Novaks abdomen? It was nothing to do with Fritz.

Anyway he showed his pea brain that day by standing at the baseline and getting aced repeatedly

30?
Right now my forecasts say 27-28. No high humidtiy. Conditions for their USO quarterfinal were 10 times worse and we saw the result.
It was 44 degrees for the Cincinnati final and Djokovic won in 4 hours.

If he loses this match it won't be because of heat, lol

fritz playing well but man, he is going to have to hit a LOT of winners to take this. novak is looking ridiculously solid, and on top of it the serving accuracy is dialed in.

When you look at their h2h and consider this is Novak's strongest GS then it is hard to see past him in this match.

However, stranger things have happened and Fritz has a puncher's chance if really on form. I will go for Novak in 4 tough sets as i think Fritz will play well today.

Fritz has the ability to make Djokovic sweat for a set or two but he usually clams up completely against Novak so this is probably a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 sorta deal.

Last three major tournaments on hard courts for Djokovic - straight set wins in the last five rounds at AO, last four rounds at USO, both elimination rounds (semi/final) at Turin ATP finals. Good at peaking these days when it matters?

If he can do it vs Sinner and Raz then it would be huge.

Can't believe I woke up a couple of hours earlier for a Djokovic match, went back to sleep realising it was way too early; then woke up again just now & found that a WTA match is the reason for this delay.

Should I consider taking yet another small nap?
