lol at the guy replying to me who said he went into the film without preconceptions. if you go into a film without preconceptions, you're going in without a thought in your head, and watching the film in a vacuum where nothing else exists. this makes you a moron.

Just saw the movie tonight...the only reason I went was because of a cnn article saying that some people actually became depressed and even suicidal after watching this movie over their disgust with humanity wanting to destroy the beauty of Pandora.

I must say, it was exactly what I expected. This is without a doubt the most overrated movie in the history of cinema!

It might have 3D visual effects, but it has a 1D story. As the movie began I still had hope, but as it progressed I started liking it less and less. By the time the fighting began, I was ready for it to just end. So many cliches, so obviously political, not enough character development. I didn't like the main character at all, and thought he was just a cocky b@sterd.

Not a bad movie, but mediocre at best with impressive visual effects. It could've been alot better than it was if they focused more on the plot.

I really tried to give this movie a shot, but it was so boring I stopped watching half-way through. I think around the stupid trees that carry the whispers of the ancestors or something.

This movie is a rip off of Ernest Goes to Camp. Seriously there are numerous similarities.

Avatar, in 3D.
A mixture of excitement and an unpleasant anxiety filled me when I went to the cinema. I really, really wanted to relax and let the movie take me to a trip in an unimaginable world and I feared that it would ultimately fail, as did so many motion pictures before it.
You see, it's not easy to make me pay attention, it's kind of hard for me to lose myself in an artificial world presented to me on the big screen. Books, no problem. But not many movies make me stay silent and focused, caring for what happens.
So there I was, almost three hours later, and I couldn't believe my eyes. Wow. The film was exactly what it had to be. Pandora was alive, it was there, almost waiting for me to smell a flower, to feel the wind, to hear the jungle living around me. There were the Navi, glorious and powerful, and they seemed totally convincing. Everything seemed to click into place.
This movie is not about deep questions, it's not about making you think (despite some good ideas, namely the "way" of the Navi), but making you live with the characters in this utterly beautiful world. It succeeds.

I completely understand why someone might not like this film. But one shouldn't expect too much from it really - at least not too much outside of the CGI and the atmosphere, which is so vivid and alive you can almost touch it. Sometimes I hear people complaining how the film is dull, there are reviews on IMDB about the film being a "turning point for the worse", but it isn't. It's simply the old story told in this new, beautiful voice. As such, one can't expect great plot complexity, amazing character development and so on. The movie is fine for what it is and what it set out to be. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm glad I watched it and was able to free my mind for a couple of hours.

I agree totally. Wish I'd written this post, but I can't write that well.

Late to the party here, but WOW was that a wonderful movie. We just got back from seeing it in 3D and even a month after release the theater was packed. Thank you James Cameron et al. for letting me get lost for 3 hours. I can't wait to see it again.

Saw it on the weekend and I enjoyed it. It was a very cool movie. I don't think I appreciated it as much because I had eye strain throughout the whole movie, and it was very hot in the theatre. But still, it was very cool.

One thing I found though, was that I didn't find myself really cheering for the Navi. I was sort of indifferent as to who would win the war.. I think it's because it had sort of a cheap storyline to it and because it was kind of cliche how they portrayed the military.

But how awesome were the visuals. It would be wonderful to venture into Pandora.

How can you not root for that bad-@ss military guy sippin' coffee and blowin' up Navi trees?

Not sure if sarcastic, but I didn't hate him like I knew I was supposed to. He was just so stereotypical and cliche that I couldn't take him seriously. Plus, like you said, he was so badass which was actually kind of cool, in my opinion.

Avatar, The Hurt Locker, and Inglorious Basterds were all good movies but Avatar is the best movie of the year. The best scenes in Inglorious Basterds was when all the Germans died in the theater and the one scene where the German soldier had his brains bashed in by a baseball bat. The Hurt Locker was good but Avatar put the "hurt" in Hurt Locker.

I'll have to say The Hurt Locker was a great true story and one of the best and most realistic war movies I ever saw. It almost feels like your fighting in combat when you watch this movie. Also playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 feels like fighting in war.

Sounds like one of those cliche lines delivered by movie critics, you wouldn't so happen be one of those people would you?

This is one of many flaws in the movie. I just can't overlook the lack of depth in the story and characters. Visual effects just don't cut it for me.

Avatar was such a fun ride for me. The movie throws you into a world filled with beautiful colors and imagination. Yes, the plot was predictable and the characters were a bit shallow but it did not stop me from enjoying this. Comtemplating a second viewing.

I disagree. I thought the story was unimaginative. Up in the air was easily the best movie I saw in 2009.

Avatar was very very mixed imo...the planet was BEAUTIFUL, and I ended up envying the Na'vi A LOT, but the plot was terribly weak. Plain and simple. It's straight from Pocahantas, no lie. :(

Still a beautiful, groundbreaking movie tho...I would love to live there.

Did anyone experience eye strain or headaches while watching the movie? I had a constant eye strain throughout the whole movie that hindered the experience. I wore contacts. If I watch it again I want to do my best to minimize eye strain and headache. I read that you should focus on the 3D part that is intentionally sticking out because the background will be blurry (I noticed this while watching) which contributes to the strain.

Did you guys wear contacts, or glasses? Where did you sit in the theatre? Did you see the IMAX version? Just trying to see if anyone experienced eye strain.

^^ I wore glasses and my seat was around 8 meters from the screen. Nothing bothered me actually, although those 3D glasses are kind of uncomfortable when you have to put them on your dioptric ones.

I noticed the same problems for about the first 20 minuted. Then I started to focus my eyes on what each individual scene intended you to focus on, and everything fell into place. The blurry foregrounds and backgrounds didn't bother me, they just seemed 'realistic'. The eye strain and queazy feeling went away.

I had decided not to go to this movie, because I didn't like what i sawin the trailers, mainly because the characters seem too much like CGI characters and because the story didn't seem to great.

But yesterday friend of mine called and said he wanted to see Avatar, I went to see the movie and it was actually quite entertaining. Story was quite predictable, but the 3D effects and all the action was quite entertaining. Even the story wasn't too much of a drawback. Seeing the movie was quite an experience actually.

I would give it 8/10 :)

I don't wear any corrective lenses, but I had eye strain similar to what you are describing.

I don't get people envying the Na'vi or thinking they live in a good world. Don't forget, they are not even at the top of the food chain there. I wouldn't want to live in a world with dinosaur-like carnivorous creatures.

I think Titanic was a monumental achievement in film making. A masterwork.

I honestly don't understand what Titanic achieved - was the story or special effects anything revolutionary?

However, Avatar was something else.

One peeve I had with Avatar was that it looked more like it was 50 years into the future rather than 150. I mean would anyone be using wheelchairs by then? But other than that, it was a masterpiece.

well for me, when you consider that he conceived, envisioned, wrote and directed the entire movie...

here's the thing...it wasn't just the technical achievements which were extraordinary. It was crafting a rich story, a love story, onto a historical movie that told the incredible tale of why and how the titanic sank. I think to do All of that was an incredible piece of movie making. When I saw this, months after it came out, women were sobbing during the final scenes.

LOL...Alright, you're entitled to your own opinion. I can't see it as anything more than a pathetic chick flick.

I was this close to going to avatar until a guy I know started raving about it. The same guy who thought Jackass 2 was a cinematic masterpiece...so I went to something else instead.

Titanic isn't a chick flick. How often do you see a frozen dead infant floating in the water in a chick flick? Titanic has substance, unlike Avatar which is about as thin as a paper plate.

I had nothing to do and found out myself on a mall with Avatar 3D's session minutes away from start, so I bought the ticket, having in mind that I already saw the regular version, I have to say that this movie is totally worth to watch again in 3D, it is amazing.

I haven't seen Avatar yet, but I definitely want to see it, especially in 3D. I wonder if it's going to go to IMAX theatre.
