Awesome match in The Zone today

On the boards we all tend to whine about this and that ... For the record, nothing to whine about: today was awesome.

After playing a ho hum ladies' 3.5 match yesterday ... I needed it.

First yesterday: I wasn't off, but I wasn't on either. First time playing with a new teammate and there is definitely some style of play and positioning to learn there. My serves were fine but not great. Held my serves. My returns were okay but not great. Lost in split sets after 3rd set breaker. Wasn't unhappy, wasn't happy.

Today played 7.5 mixed, partnering with a 3.5M so we were 0.5 low for the court rating. Against a 4.0M and 3.5F (she just got bumped down from 4.0 last season .... pretty good player)
Warmed up for 90 minutes beforehand and was feeling very very good. Striking cleanly both top spin and slice shots. Reflex volleys were so crisp. Overheads were fantastic ... dropping back overheads (not my strong suit) were equally good. Warmed up serve and was hitting my spots much better than usual.

It carried through the entire match. My partner was equally good today.
I held my serve at Love 3 times. In mixed. When we were under the court rating. As a female. At LOVE! (if you don't play mixed, you may not know this is a BIG deal!)
I was a force at the net. I was patient and surgical at baseline. When the female went to lob ... anticipated and stepped in for clean overheads or swing volleys out of the air rather than waiting for it to bounce. My returns of males' 4.0 kick serve ... I rocked them today.
My partner was a beast today. He mixed it up between S&V and steady baseline. Great mid-court play. Just played really solidly.
Won 6-2; 6-2
Under court rating. (yes, this bears repeating)
Against good players who were not playing badly.
Damn!

So ... since this was a zone day here is the secret sauce: (which I will be repeating for every match from now until eternity)
Wake up at 4:45am for no apparently good reason (alarm set for 6:30)
3 cups of coffee with real cream
Yogurt (greek, plain with a drizzle of honey from friends' farm)
Leftover slice of peperoni pizza
Watch some tennis channel (Laver cup Fritz match and Isner/Fed match)
Do 2 loads of laundry

I also have a new kit of lucky shirt, lucky skirt and lucky wristband.

@OnTheLine,

And on the bright side, even if your new routine doesn't work, you'll at least get a lot of laundry done!
LOL yes ... and between all my tennis togs, husband's running gear and a teenage daughter who needs to wear 3 outfits each day somehow we have a lot of laundry (and a lot of un-matchable socks!)

I fully attribute this to the concentrated, high level TTW practice session the other weekend. :giggle:

Or maybe the pizza! lol.

Good stuff, You'll be at Nadal level rituals soon!
Last week was great fun ... I do wonder how you can hit as well as you do while holding an ongoing conversation ....

I can be a little neurotic ... but not Nadal level!

You lost me there. You must be in really great shape. 45min is max warm-up for me. Whew...

Oh, the feeling of being under-rated and to pull out a W ranks way up there for reasons to play again. Nice work!

I may look a little too "thick" .... but I am in great shape these days. A lot of work to get here.

And yes .. the best feeling!

I almost started a new thread but I wanted to piggie back on to this one since it is basically the same. I have been playing fairly poorly this summer having some poor losses and no really good wins. Then at the end of the summer I play a good 5.0 and former d1 top 25 player (he is 3 years removed from playing on the team so not real old) with a good 5.0 partner and we won a close match. It was great to win that the top 25 guy did not play great but still was very good.

Then I played our first league match for our early start league. Played 1st doubles for our 5.0 team and played tremendous. I was paired with a good 4.5 and we played 2 solid 5.0's. Played well at the net but absolutely dominated with my groundstrokes. I missed 3 returns all match (one of which was an ace) and was really driving them hard and deep. I really felt being in the zone when there was this one shot after I hit a good return and he hit a very good volley at my feet (i was a foot inside the baseline) and I went to just get it in with a lot of topspin but instead it stayed low and dipped right over the net in the middle for a winner between them. Then in that same game I hit a good return and followed it up with a huge service line swinging volley for a winner. We still barely won, they played mostly to my partner but it seemed like anytime that we needed a point I hit a big shot for a winner. I hit some lines, I drilled hard groundstrokes right over the net in the perfect place right between them. We won 7-6, 6-4.

It was a really good feeling after having a pretty rough summer tennis wise.

Nice!

The memories of those good wins (or even a good loss) stay in our veins and keep us going through those spells of not so snappy play.

When we have a great win ... and it sounds like yours was fantastic .... it can help us raise our level going forward. We know we have it!

Not sure how I missed this thread, I like hearing success stories on the courts. Well done to OnTheLine for your previous match and pregame routine. Nicely done CHtennis on getting that win as well.

Win or lose, I try to learn something from each match. What I did right and what I can do better next time. I think self analysis in tennis is definitely one of the keys to improvement. If I can boost a little myself, I’m 10-2 for the season in 3.5/4.0 singles. :)

Nice record for the season! ..... mine is a little less wonderful.... think I am 21-33 for the year (singles/doubles/mixed all combined)..... not complaining at all. Lots of "good wins" plenty of "good losses" and some junk in between.

No doubt analyzing post-match is critical. Even taking away one thing and making an improvement/correction going forward will be a benefit.

And for the record, the pregame routine aside from the long warm up is just me joking about adding new superstitions.

As someone that plays a lot of mixed, this is a big deal. I spent years trying to find ways to help my wife hold her serve. You have no idea about the crazy feints, poaches, fake poaches I'll try to drive the returner crazy.

So congrats on 3 service holds at love.

Thanks .... quite pleased with that one .... It was one of those days where I was able to hit the T with a flat serve on deuce court and a slice to the T on ad quite effectively. I threw in a couple of aces that day and partner was a beast at net ...
