Babolat POP tennis sensor

Odd thing happened tonight. Not sure if it was the sensor malfunctioning or if an update to the App changed the way it calculated the data.
I usually get between 4000-4500 PIQ score for a session that is focused on ground strokes or playing singles.

Tonight I played my buddy and in our warmup my PIQ score was round 4800. Higher than normal, and I felt I was hitting well but nothing special.
Then after volleys, I reset the sensor for our competitive hitting and it registered me at about 7,000. With this my style was an 8, Avy MPH 55 and spin% was 66.
I played well but not out of my mind tennis. Nothing else seemed odd.

Typically my style is between 5, 6 on a good day. Speed will be closer to 45-50 and spin is between 25-30%. So I wonder what happened? Sensor seemed to stay in place well.

Then when I looked at my Profile that breakdowns your average peak score (for the last 6 sessions), Obviously my avg PIQ will be up since I got this boost from today's 7,000 session. Avg PIQ was 5009 with a style of 6, Average speed listed as 20, but the blue color dial takes up almost half the rolling column and then spin was at 34%.

So is something wrong with the output regarding average speed for the Average PIQ score? The picture looks more around 50mph plus, but it says 20 which would not correlate with a 5009 PIQ. Strange.
Got a 5100 and 6300 today.
Not sure I like the updated PIQ scores.

First, if a pro tennis player is around 10,000. It made sense for me a 4.0 to be around 4000-4500.
But now I've gotten a 5K, 6K and 7K. I think I'm at best 40% of the lowest pro tennis player, not 60%.

Also the variability seems even wider than it was before. If I had 2 session where I felt the same they might rate 4100 and 4300.
Now I had a session of 5100 and 6300. Only difference were more groundies in the second session. Play overall close. But now over 1000 points away.

Spin numbers have gone up greatly. Did that mean the old method was way off? I might agree with that since I thought I hit with a lot of spin.

Also the Average FH or BH speed will be around 50, but then the AVG speed reported on the PIQ score will be 55. How can it be higher if my Avg FH was 50 and Avg BH was 50?Yet all I hit were groundies. No serves and maybe a handful of smashes.

I'll give it more time obviously.

Yes, the PIQ score calculation has been adjusted, and thus scores may appear higher, as they are for you. In regards to the output, I'm not exactly sure what is occurring there, but I will share it with the team.

I appreciate all of the feedback you offered here, and we'll discuss it with the team as they continue to work on updates to POP.

Spin number looked dodgy previously - I also felt I hit with decent amount of topspin but PIQ showed 17-20% all the time. My new spin numbers in 40-45 range looks more probable than 20%. The speed number looks odd, I hope they have noticed it as well and are creating a fix for it. My style has gone up from 5 to 7 and does not look right. I think the problem is with speed calculation. The previous calculation was the average of ground shot speeds, the new number is higher than that.

I guess I have to adjust, but not sure how to interpret the numbers now.

Tonight's session playing singles:

PIQ Score 7064
8 Style (6 was my max before)
Speed 59mph--Yet my Avg BH speed was 44 and Avg FH speed was 43. 57 serves with an Average of 69.
65% spin. (This is a big jump from 25% that I hovered around before).

If only BH, FH and serve go into the Speed calculations shouldn't my PIQ speed be:

{(270FH*43Avgmph)+(298BH*44Avgmph)+(57serves*69AvgMPh)]/(270+298+69)=

[11610+13112+3933]/637=44.984 Not the recorded PIQ of 59?

My overall PIQ score (for the last 6 sessions) still lists the speed off. Shows my average speed at 14 MPH.

With my spin, instead of it being a 3-5% variance, it's jumped to 10-12% variance.

I spoke with our Connected team, and we are currently having an issue with the Speed. It's showing up incorrectly, which may explain the discrepancies you two are witnessing. They are working on a solution and hope to have it ASAP. Stay tuned.

Seems with the new update, the sensor downloads easier and fails less often.
Could software changes help this? Anyone else experiencing this?

Just got an update to the app. Something about showing me my winning factors. Sounds interesting, @Babolat Official please tell us more. :)
Winning factors is a new feature to better help you track your game and improve. You will be given two strengths for each session as well as one point of improvement. PIQ bases these suggestions on the history of your progress as well as the current session.

Sounds great and actually worked great. I tried it tonight and thewinning factors actually was spot on! More features like this will definitely make this something more useful!

But something is definitely up with the piq score since the previous update. It's way to high. I'm usually somewhere around 4500 on an average, but since the update I'm between 6-7000. One time my score for a session was 7800 and tonight it was even higher - 8514. Which incidentally is the exact same number as the highest piq reached during the session, so it feels like it's maybe showing the wrong number?

Edit: I checked and when pressing the share button my true piq score for tonight's session is shown - 6900-ish. So in the overview it's showing the same number twice.

I'm on the DL right now. So haven't used the POP with the latest update.
Where do winning factors show up?

Another odd thing has occurred, all my PIQ scores for each session are now listed = to my Best PIQ score for that session. Even ones that were recorded months before the update.

Prior to the Updated My PIQ score for one session was 6260, now reads as 8069 which is also equal to the Best PIQ score for that session.

Despite that number being updated wrong, my Average PIQ score remains 6017. So it is not connecting or showing the wrong data.

They show up before you see the summary/main page for your session. I got three - two positive ones and one negative. Through the learn more button for each I could see a graph where X was the session time in minutes and Y was something related to the factor. In the graph I could see all the relevant shots. For instance my negative was the my backhand slice is less effective. So on the Y axis I could see a spin percentage and in the graph all those bad slices marked out. I also got the tip to add more bite to my slice to get the ball even lower.

It's going to be interesting seeing how much these winning factors will change. I know I have a strong serve and a strong forehand (which was my two positive factors) so if those two come up after every session it probably wont help me much.

My feedback was eerily similar - terrific serve, spectacular forehand, and add more bite to the backhand slice to keep the ball low! I hope this does not get repeated for every session..
But I like the time-effect graph in the Winnings Factors Details screen. It looks accurate in terms of the time and spin/speed axis.

The last session winning factors feedback - "powerful forehands" and "monitor backhand technique to improve your attack".
but shots per minute does not look right. 1 hr session shows 26 shots/minute - a shot every 2 seconds is not possible for 1 full hour.

I think I recall reading in some older post that the shots per minute are based on POPs algorithm counting only your active time as the denominator, not total session time.

@Babolat Official I don't know if it's a bug or so but since I've he previous update the pop don't register any volleys at all. I don't spend alot of time at net but every now and then during a match and definitely during the warm up. So there should be some volleys registered.

Also, I wonder about the spin percentage. In my most recent session my negative winning factor was that I should try to get more spin on my top spin forehand. It told me that my spin percentage was 86%....not that low really. Also when I clicked "learn more" the y-axis (for spin) went above 100, I could see 105 as the top number.

Edit: it looks like there is no volleys at all anymore in the stats. Have you made the decision to remove this feature?

Yikes all the volleys are gone. None in my previous sessions now.

I'm not sure I'd agree with getting rid of them. I was frustrated that misread volleys would bring my ground stroke data down. But it would be nice ot know if I hit some volleys.

Have you clean the connector which looks like dots in back of sensors?
Obviously it gets dirty from sweating and it prevents charging. Also move around sensor in the charging station.
Sometimes it has to be aligned perfectly in order to start charging the sensor. I had a similar problem but I clean both the charging station and back of sensor connectors and align both together then the problem is gone.

After several new updates, the sensor is less accurate than before especially volleys for me too.

I do get volley readings - but the number is always much lower than what I think I usually hit. 3-5 reported against my usual 10-15 in my 1 hour play session.

I have been using the Babolat POP for many months, playing 3-4 times a week. Recently I have observed a number of changes:

· The app is now showing selected data for forehand / back hand - top 20/50/80 shots - PIQ & spin – this is a big step forward – I would like to be able to see that kind of data for all the strokes.

· The app no longer seems to be recording volleys which is a bit of a problem when you need to hit a certain number of volleys before advancing to the next “skills” level! I did a number of specific volley drills this evening and, while the activity recorded zero, the skills number advanced by ~30 – probably half of what I hit. So the sensor / app are picking up some volleys somewhere. In the top of the session data screen, 621 shots are recorded whereas the circle at the bottom shows 586 in the centre – the difference is the volleys recorded. It seems to me that in the most recent updates of the app, a number of the data points have got crossed up / missed in different parts of the app.

· The session PIQ scores have jumped as others have noted and I do not think they are realistic - there is no way I am at 90-95% of pro level.

· There is something funny with the Dashboard PIQ calculation for the last six sessions. For the last 4 of mine, the fluidity score has been exactly 3,000 each time – highly unlikely!

· For my last 6 or so sessions, my session PIQ score has been exactly the same as my best PIQ score for that session. Also, a number of the session PIQ scores seem to have changed from those I recorded before.

· I used to be able to calculate my overall PIQ score from the average of the last 6 sessions but that calculation does not agree with the indicated value any more.

Also seems like Babolat pop can record individual shots and hope we can see those individual shot data instead of total amount of data or average speed of data.

Can you send me screenshots for both situations at msafi@babolat.com? One for the 86% spin/winning factors and one for the y-axis reading 105?

I'll share them with our CPX team and figure out what is occurring.

Got back on the court today so I was able to use the POP again.

Observations:

1.) Still listing PIQ Score as your BEST PIQ. But if you share the info it will list actual PIQ for the session. Strange. So my PIQ Score on the activity screen was listed as 7278, same as my BEST PIQ. When I share it it then lists the PIQ as 4655. I'm betting that number is right.

2.) Speed in the PIQ break downs is still off numerically. Listed mine as 12mph. Yet the energy bar is clearly beyond 12.

3.) Has PIQ readjusted down again? Originally, my PIQs were around 4000-4500. Then with an update about 2 months ago it jumped up to between 6500-7500. Today my PIQ was around the 4500s. Or was this just me getting back into things since I was taking it easy recovering from an injury?

4.) My ground strokes usually average between 45-52. Today they were around 40. Is that reading off? Or was I just getting back into things? I'll find out Tuesday when I play my buddy instead of hitting with my wife like I did today.

The neat part is the winning factors. The little graphs might actually be valuable. It graphed PIQ score of a stroke vs. time. Interesting my Forehands have 2 zones either above 3500 or below 1500. I wonder if the 1500 were lazy defensive slices or could that be my feed???

I'm hoping to learn something from these graphs, and if they clean up the stuff I mentioned above, their might be some long term value in the PIQ instead of it just being a fun gadget.

I concur - it's a "killer" feature in all of POP. I'm not sure why the style factor is not assigned to serves - I'm sure the swing path and smoothness can be extracted for serves as well, just like the groundies.

I'm guessing that's not possible or very unlikely at best. I usually impart spin (I.e. on my second serves) by changing my grip to angle the face of the racket when swinging. POP wouldn't pick that up since it's attached to your wrist. It wouldn't know my grip.

Had another session tonight.
Still no volleys registered. I did a 10 minute of volleys only with my partner. Everything was logged as a forehand or backhand.
I'm worried that volleys will now lower scores of FH an BH when playing full court games, making the data difficult to interpret.

If I'm hitting great from the baseline and get my opponent to produce short balls that I can volley off, my FH speeds might be brought down by the volleys.

Yet, if I'm pushed behind the baseline but drive the balls back, my score might be higher since I don't have any volleys, but my play might have actually been worse.

My BH and FH average speeds seemed slower than in the past, and I wonder if that is because volleys are now being averaged in there?

PIQ still listed as the same as max PIQ, yet sends the right PIQ if I share the info. On the shared info speed for PIQ score is still too low.

Again, the winning factors seem interesting. I'm now trying to think of a way to use them. I had a recommendation to hit with more topspin on my forehand. If it doesn't suggest that in my next session did I do enough to fix that?

it's not just the grip - it's also the swing path on second serves. The second serve has more upward path and more closed face on impact because of the change in grip than the first serve. The spin is measured by the swing path and not necessarily the actual spin imparted. So, I think spin and style can be assigned to serves as well. I want the style as well - because I tend to lose form and end up with jerkier motion as body tires out during play sessions. Once they starts flashing spin, style and speed in real time on the device itself, I can decide when it's time to call time on play sessions.

Volleys have been a problem from day one for me. It never registered volley practices at all. A handful get registered during actual play.
Winning factors is a very cool feature. You can get the sense of topspin by looking at session details and spin percentage. And also it seems to keep track of top 20,50 and 80 shots of each category and gives you feedback.

Thanks for clarifying. Glad to say we are on the same page. It would be great if there were breakdowns per stroke.
There have been a few features I found that were not intuitive to find. Such as your PIQ score breakdown for a session--have to share the info to get it. So I was wondering if I missed something more explicit or detailed for "style."

On another note, today the PIQ scores are listed correctly now instead of listing the highest PIQ score.
Volleys are back in the mix too.

Everything is looking right now except for the speed listed in the PIQ score for a session.
Maybe I don't understand how it is calculated.

Today a buddy and I hit virtually groundstrokes for a 2 hour session. Only volleys off short balls and all balls were drop fed. No serves.
My average FH speed was 42 and my average BH was 42.

My PIQ for the session was 6737.
Style 7
Speed 53 MPH
Spin 63%.

If I virtually hit groundies how is my PIQ average speed 53MPH? 10 MPH higher than my Aveages for my groundies of 42?

Let me add it is downloading almost the first try all the time now (even when I put it under a sweat band vs. the PIQ band). Not sure if an update took care of this or if the cooler temperatures have helped compared to the summer. Downloading is very smooth and seems faster now too.

Loving the new software and the additional information it provides. The charts that show the dot points for PIQ score for the forehands and backhands as well as time of occurrence are especially helpful when you can access them.

Also want to acknowledge the the great customer service Babolat has provided me on getting a replacement wristband for my POP. @Babolat Official connecting me with the warranty department and it was a quick and simple process. Thank you for the great customer service!

I spoke with the Connected team, and they had a few answers to share.

First, the reason you were receiving advice on your 86 % topspin forehand is because it had decreased from the time before by 1 % (meaning you were at 87 %). When you decrease from previous sessions, the Winning Factors let you know to monitor that stroke.

Also, the 105 % top range is being looked into and updated.

I'll share this average speed situation with the team. Is it possible to send me screenshots at msafi@babolat.com?
