Babolat Pure Aero 2019

I have actually gone on a half a year long racquet journey, trying everything from the blade 18/20 to the pure drive, and I have actually narrowed down my choices. Next week I will be demoing the aero tour, aero plus, strike 16/19 gen 3 and pure drive tour plus. I already own one aero standard, and one of these 5 frames is gonna be my racquet choice until the next pure aero/drive/strike. My arm can handle babolats, plus I think I have been getting good string options for these frames. I’m open to any string/tension recommendations to make sure my arm stays fine, but next week I will be trying:
Kirschbaum pro line evolution
Solinco hyper g 16 + 16l
Confidential 16l
Rpm blast rough 17
Head velocity 16+17
Technifibre triax 17(16 later if I need more durability + control)
What I want to know is what tension should I use for these? I was thinking 49-55 for polys and 53-57 for multi. And one last question, how does a babolat #2 compare to a wilson #2? Is it slightly bigger?
Any takers?

PyroKid... i never measured, but at least to me my 4 3/8 grip Pure Aero and Pure Drive felt larger than my Head racquets. I purchased a 4 1/4 Pure Strike and it was more similar to others.

I think issue is thickness/shape...

I have a number oh Head racquets with the rectangular shape grips (82 pallet) and they feel very different from the newer, more square grip shapes (82S pallet).

I it may just be shape instead of actual measured size

??? @g4driver, I play tennis with a strung frame and overgrips.

If I am testing different strings, I match the differently strung racquet with my regular one. That way I know that any difference in performance is related to the actual string itself, rather than any changes the different string makes to the specs of the racquet.

I am 100% positive every player uses a strung frame to play tennis. [emoji2] 99.9% use over grips where I live due to oppressive humidity. Just hit 3 hours in it. [emoji3525]

If you match a frame to reflect a change in strings or a different overgrip, that's great. For me, I am simply not that good of player to notice any 3-5 gram variance in weight / balance if I try a different overgrip or a different string.

When I put the same 1.30mm VCT I have been using for 8+ years, but change an overgrip, that variance will be +-3 grams all in the handle so the balance change is inconceivable to me as is 3 grams of weight change. I have bigger problems with my tennis game than concerning myself something that small. [emoji28]

I matched frames for a lot of 4.5 and 5.0 players who want 3-6 frames matched = same weight same balance unstrung, no overgrip. If they change overgrips, or try a different string, they don't seem to have any issue picking a string they like without a rebalancing of such a small change in weight or balance. Some seem to be pretty darn good players without matched frames.

Matching unstrung frames with the same replacement grips works for me and my clients.

What racquet do you use? I haven’t been around long but I’ve seen your posts, you seem to be pretty educated. I can only imagine you use such an advanced frame like an RF97 or a 93p 18/20 lol

Use 342 gram 2016 Pure Aeros + all bought as gently used frames. Been using VCT 1.30mm for 8 years.

I have one APD+ and long for the release of the 2013 APD /APD+ as do many players on this forum and around the world.

Which color of cyclone? I’m gonna try cyclone tour 16 in some demos and wanted to know what’s a good tension/reference.

Not Cyclone.. Cyclone Tour in both colors. I have strung over 30 reels of 1.30mm over the last 8 years and only one player use it at 50lbs....A 5.0C former Div 1 player in his 40s. Everyone else uses in from. 52 to 58 lbs Search the thread about Strings for 5.0 players

Fixed that for you

I tried to convince a few APD fanatics to try the "+". But all I got from them was blank stares and a lot of head shaking.

For many, the idea of using anything but a 27" frame is anathema!

Sure. A lot of us like the traditional length sticks. You can’t knock tradition. Remember. Progressivism is usually regreasivism.

It is such a great frame. Coming from long time with 28" inch Wilson 6.2 Skunks the 27.5 inch APD fit perfectly.

I have 6'4 24 year old buddy who uses them. Makes him a beast with the extra plow through you get from an extended frame.

Just received my 2016 PAVS. 285 unstrung SW so it will need 4-5 grams in the hoop. Excited!

I put 9gr from 10 to 14 O'Clock (basically 2x4.5g strips all way long under the bumper guard), plus 3gr in the buttcap und leather grip. I got 337gr strung with 337SW. Could not be better setup for me.
Have fun with yours!

Wow - you added roughly 30 SW points which means your stick was roughly 305 SW strung prior to customization. Not surprised that most people that play this stick stock do not like it. 337 SW on the other hand is a bulldozer haha.

No, no. All mine PAVS had also 285-297SW unstrung.
9gr added around 22-23SW (this weight no exactly in the hoop but all way along bumper guard).

I am trying the pure aero 2019 plus and it’s a nice racquet. Similar to the regular aero but that extra length is a help for my height. I will probably switch and stick, I need to sell my old racquets and stop reading these threads.
Any update on your experience with the PA Plus? How does it compare to the standard PA?

Felt a little more powerful and better on serves, spin was very good, pretty much everything was good except maybe control but you gotta use spin, but I am sticking with the ezone, just because it’s a little less stiff.

The pure aero grip sizes seem to be running a full +1 from their counterparts at other brands
I put a Syntec Team replacement grip (same as Gen 3 Pure Strike) in my Pure Aero and it feels much better now. 4 1/4 with the stock grip felt like a 4 3/8 to me. With my wilson pro overgrip it's perfect for me now.

Given that the grip is thinner, would you say that you feel the racquet's stiffness more aka less comfort? I ask because I got a PA+ in my usual #3 and it's noticeably thicker which is affecting my backhand and looking for ways to make the grip thinner.

No detriment to comfort with the thinner grip. I use a dampener, overgrip, and soft Tourna Big Hitter Black strings, so it mitigates the stiffness/harshness. Overall I'm very pleased with the thinner replacement grip.

Any negative vibration you feel on impact could be significantly mitigated by stuffing a little bit of Blue Tack inside the handle via the trapdoor. Take 5gms, wrap it in cling wrap and place it snugly inside. See if that improves the comfort level.

A thinner Grip often weighs a bit less so the extra weight inside the handle will offset that weight loss.

Bought the Syntec Team, installed it and the thickness feels much better. Hopefully any comfort that the Syntec Pro provided is maintained somehow.

I weighed the outgoing Syntec Pro and it was around 16.5 grams. The Syntec Team I installed was 16. I wrapped it like I would but kept the excess grip. Doesn't look as odd as I would've thought.

For sure. Depends how you wrap them and how much you trim them off. But I don't quite know how your Syntec Team would be 16 grams when out of the box they weigh 12 grams untrimmed.? (The Babolat Skin Feel was about 16.6grams but I believe that product is discontinued and replaced by the Syntec Team product.)

Here are the stock specs ...

SYNTEC PRO
  • Length: (43.3 in / 110 cm)
  • Weight: 0.62 oz (17.5 grams)
  • Thickness: 0.07 in (1.9 mm)
  • Colors: Black/White, White/Black, Black/Yellow, Black/Silver
  • Item #: 670051
SYNTEC TEAM
  • Length: (44.9 in / 114 cm)
  • Weight: 0.42 oz (12 grams)
  • Thickness: 0.06 in (1,5 mm)
  • Colors: Black, White/Black, White/Red
  • Item #: 670065

The PA+ 2016 swung like a standard length for me too. Have a 19+ on the way and feel like it could be even better.

I just installed the Team grip... weighted it and from memory it was 12g. Could be wrong.

Hi
a friend is buying a Pure Aero, young, no arm issues, wich string do you recommend? He prefers black, or grey, not too expensive. Volk Cyclone 1.25? Kirschabaum pro line 2? any suggestions?

Firstly, stick 5 grams of Blu Tack wrapped in plastic wrap inside the racquet handle via the Butt Cap trapdoor.

That will facilitate absorption of much of the ball impact vibration shock which will make the racquet much more comfortable. It will also make the racquet a little more Head Light balanced which is often a good thing.

At that point, they could try a lot of strings without being too concerned about comfort level. Suggest Volkl Cyclone 1.3 (50lbs tension) or 1.25 (52lbs tension) (1.3 will offer longer playability and tension maintenance.). But colour shouldn't limit selection. (Solinco Hyper-G 16 - 52lbs as a starting point - would also be a very good choice for that racquet.)

what he said, except i like 8g in the handle. the deadest string you can find works best imo.

Last year i had pa19+ and this year i just got the standard. The standard has a plusher feel and imo is the better racquet, even though I acknowledge what a plus can bring (i used the 2016 pa+ for a year).
Interesting how that goes. Now im reading the pd+ is better than the standard. Too stiff for me, but it appears babolat does more than just lengthen their plus frames.

Never left. I'm a citizen of banana republic. The demos i tried were significantly worse. It's also starting to get warmer, so that's been helping. Also got a pair of PKs to help withdays that are questionable

Oh ok I thought you tapped out from the PAs for a bit and said it was elbow, so thats good news. Which PKs?

I've been borrowing my friends PA 2019 for a couple of weeks now and I'm thinking about getting my own but the extended length versions.
My friends PA has a grip size 3 and compared to my Vcore 95, Blade 98 2015, the PA has a noticably larger grip. Is this true?

I've also used to play with a size 2 grip on the PS97 and liked it, would a grip size 1 of a PA be similar to a grip size 2 of a PS97 considering the size difference?

Imho, always get a 4 3/8 size if you can. It gives you the most flexibility. If you need to go up, you can add overgrips or replace existing grip with a thicker one. If you need to go down in size, you can replace existing grip with a thinner one.

If you want to get a 4 1/4 size you can always increase grip size with thicker grip, overgrips or something like LOWROW SiZ-Up.

Keep in mind Babolat grips feel bigger because they tend to be more oval shaped. You might be able to manipulate the grip size to be more like a Yonex or Wilson simply by removing the existing grip and rewrapping it very very tightly on the handle. That has worked for me in a couple of situations.

Hello all,

I am glad to be able to contact you through this great forum.

I have been playing the PA19 for a year now and am basically very satisfied. It fits my baseline game very well. I need the high launch angle and the massive spin.

The downside is unfortunately the lack of control due to the trampoline effect and the lots of power, which is why I looked for another racquet and tried the PAVS2020 for a while: Basically, I played safer tennis with it, but it just didn't appeal to me in terms of playing style. The launch angle was much lower, the crisp feel was missing, the spin wasn't even comparable, and I was becoming more of a defensive player. I ended up having a bit of arm pain with the PAVS2020 as well.

Now I'm still looking for a racquet like the PA19 (high launch angle, massive spin and crisp feel) but with more control. Does anyone here have the same experience and possibly tips? I would definitely be very happy to hear. Especially the Yonex VCore 100 2021 I am considering.

P.S.: I already play with the Heady Lynx Tour or RPM Blast over 25 pounds.
