backhand switch

like many other ppl on the board I have been trying to change my backhand. I used to use a 2 handed backhand but am trying again ( for like the 3rd time) to use the one handed backhand. Although I eventually gained consistancy with 2h I was felt that I muscled the ball in. The shot did not feel fluid like my forhand and it was pretty irritating. Today during some regular practice I tried again to use the one handed backhand and It was suprising nice. The shot was very fluid and I managed to gain some consistancy with it. My question is should I try to stick with during matches or should I use 2hd during matches or 1hd during pracitce? and any tips for someone thats tyring to develope the 1hd backhand

In a match, your first instincts will tell you what to do, not some people on a message board. Once you've acquired enough confidence in practice with the one-hander. You'll realize you can use it in matches when you pull the trigger down the line with it after that crazy S&Ver fiend of yours has rushed the net like a mad man.

Stick with 1HB, you will not regret for the rest of your life. It just make hitting backhand much more enjoyable. If you can't find consistency and control with your 1HB, you might want to consider switching to a heavy and stabler racket with midplus or mid size head to give you more stability and control.

I have switched from 2HB to 1HB. You will have to be ready to lose some practice games during your transition. You will have a great feeling of satisfaction once you've crossed the other side of the bridge.

The wall is the best practice partner to get the feel of the stroke of a 1HB.

Once you start to enjoy the stroke, you will find yourself replacing your midplus racquet into a mid size player's racquet.

If you really want to change then stop playing matches for 2-3 months till you get you backhand down. You need to focus on lessons/walls/ballmachines/light hitting. Once your forearm has adjusted (it will become sore w/ new muscles) and you've verified w/ a pro that your stroke in elbow friendly, you may start playing non-competitive matches. If you lose your form, then go back to the wall/ballmachine/lessons for another week or two.
Oh and if no one has suggested this to you, everyday you should hold your racquet in this grip take practice swings etc. If you're unwilling to put in the time, then stick w/ your 2HBH and stop wasting everyone's time. Good luck.

You got to focus on one or the other. If you do decide to play matches, you have to be willing to lose. You must hit a lot of balls with your new backhand if you decide to change. Lots of balls also means in your matches as well.

Actually, I'd say just play around with it (find the grip that feels most comfortable). Eventually it just clicks and when it does it feels amazing to hit a winner down the line or past your opponent.

Match play is everything with a 1hbh. I could hit it pretty good in practice and getting feeds from my coach. Once the unpredictable balls come in matches, forget about it, mine sucked. I eventually switched to a 2hbh from the 1hbh just because it wasn't for me.

i also had your problem i would switch back and forth but then i got a really great 1handed backhand and hits my favourite shot it is sometimes getting me in trouble becuase i keep running around my forehand. But stick with it it has much more variety with different paced shots.

was completely opposite from me, i could hit it better in matches.

so i went out with friends to hit today and my 1h backhand was not that bad i guess. The shot was mostly flat which is ok since i did try to hit hard but was just tyring to get the ball in play.but couple of things i noticed while using it

I definitly had a better reach then my 2hd backhand

on some rallies I just grabbed the racket with my non-dominant hand without knowing which got me confused on somepoints

I couldnt really deal with some of the balls that came my way and the return of serve. I later realized that I had the option of slicing which i didnt even think of till later

I think this shot is the right thing for me. now I just want to work on getting consistancy and maby putting some spin on the shot

How do you 1H's deal with high balls? Slice them all? Take them on the rise? I prefer to hit topspin or drives, high or on the rise, rather than slicing or bunting high balls back. That's the major reason I use 2H. If I could handle high balls effectively I would use 1H. I feel neutralized, like Federer vs Nadal on clay, using the 1H.

i used to have the same problem, all my coachs told me to go with a 2h and thank god because my two hander is great now, i mostly use it but on hard serves to my backhand ill slice back

To the OP, I would not keep switching. Make up your mind and do not change it again. It will take twice as long for you to develop both strokes and you will be that much more indecisive about which one to use. Consider the advantages/disadvantages and stick to your descision. See my exp/post below on why my 2H was not "fluid" or comfortable:

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=109435

Until last week really, I ignored the 2H comfort issues. I finally realized with a few tweaks here and there, that my footwork has been causing all of my misery. I haven't broken my old habits yet, but the change has made my decision to use a 2H BH concrete. It's just a solid stroke with much more inherent control. No wonder so many players use it today.
