Baghdatis tried to be number one in 2006.

But he was just stopped by Federer, Nadal and an unbelievable Agassi in some key matches. Against Agassi it was in the US Open 2006; if Baghdatis had won that match, maybe he would have reached the final. If it was not for Federer, Nadal and Agassi; Baghdatis would have been the number one in 2006?

Even if he won USO that'd only put him at No. 3. Switch his AO points with Fed (as if Marcos won) and he still trails both of them by a huge margin.
It was a good year though. I always forget his AO and Wimbledon runs were same year.

Federer had a 92-5 record that year. Baghdatis wouldn't even been close if he could collect points during 3 years in comparison with Federer's 2006.

Anyone losing to 36 years old ''stiff back'' Agassi had no business winning the title.

But tipsa...don'tlikehim!, I saw a video with images of the match and the song, I think, from Gladiator. It look likes Agassi was playing like in 2005; some unbeliable points were played and both players fighted in that amazing match.

Bags played so well at Wimbledon in 2006. Unfortunately he had to play Rafa in the semifinal. Rafa usually plays his best at the semifinal and finals of tournaments. Marcos could have had a better career if not for all the injuries he had to endure throughout his professional life. He reminds me of Nalbandian and Agassi. :(

If he couldnt even beat broken backed Agassi who lost to Benjamin Becker in the 3rd round and could barely walk after, he was never doing anything at the Open anyway. He tried to be #1? In theory everyone on tour is trying to be #1, especialy anyone in the top 20. I dont understand the point of this thread..

FWIW I absolutely loved Bagdhatis at the 06 Australian Open and was hoping to see a lot more of him than we did. He had a nice Wimbledon that year, and yes his U.S Open match with Agassi was an exciting one (despite my previous comments) but as time went on rather than rising further her just failed off further and further way from his once held potential.

Lol.. this thread forced me to look up what Baghdatis actually did in 2006.

Grand Total of two ATP finals (okay, one of them was a grand slam) and he was in contention of being number. If it wasn't for such weak era, he would not be even in top 20.

Oh yeah. He was in contention for the prestigious Number 11 ranking? Is that what you meant to say? Because he finished 12th, nowhere near in contention for anything. Much better than Kevin Anderson finishing 12th in 2015 with 1 major quarter all year and 2 R16 and doing nothing else all year as opposed to Baghdatis who actually made a major final and another major semi and also did nothing else all year.

Agassi US Open 2006 in his first two matches was close or at the same level as in the US Open 2005; in which he won one set against Federer in the final after many long matches.

Baghdatis won Beijing just the week after the US Open in 2006.

Agassi's biography, "Open", started off with his retelling of his match with Baghdatis. Agassi had taken back injections, but he re-aggrivated his injury late in the match. Lucky for him, Bags started cramping after the very same point that Agassi's back gave out. So the fact that Agassi lost to Becker shouldn't reflect poorly on Bags. Agassi said Bags reminded him of himself.

Great book, by the way. Actually, the best sports bio I've read, though he had a ghost writer. And his retelling of the pre-match, match and post-match vs. Bagdatis is the best part of the book.

That was a Super Agassi extremely motivated for that last tournament. He ran out of gas for the match against Benjamin Becker.

Ya, he put on 30lbs on muscle and became the fittest man on tour by doing meth. Doesnt work that way, sorry. You want meth when you do meth, its how it affects the brain and why people like it. Your body stop secreting when meth is entered into the system, its a replacement, why its so hard to quit. The body takes time to start secreting naturally, after long term use, it stops all together.

Meth is a physically addicting drug, its not spiritual like he makes it sound in the book.

Dont believe anything you read in that book. He only lost to gomez because of his hair piece, no mention of his fitness (consistenly poor until he started "meth")?
