Ball toss relaese pt?

At what pt in the toss do you release the ball? Do you release the ball when arm is at shoulder hight or higher? I have problems with my toss and always seem to be tossing over my head instead of into court. Any tips would be appreciated.

I found many articles such as this one mentioning this link:

It's generally a good idea to release the ball as late as possible, so that your tossing hand is closest to where you want the ball to end up.

I'd suggest reading previous threads, there's a lot of valid information available.

Maybe I am doing something wronge but when I toss the ball my arm is making an arc. Therfore if I release the ball when my arm is above shoulder high I ball goes too far back. I watched some sampres serves in slow mo and it seemes as thought he realses the ball at waist hight but then arm follows ball. Any insight would be helpfull.

I've been having a lot of trouble with my toss as well and it is in fact the main reason why my service is off at the moment. Is there anybody who has a clear videoclip of a proper toss? I have an idea how it should look like, but I want to make sure..

Thanks!

Check this pic. Joachim shows us where to toss the ball. In this pic the ball has just left his hand.

Great Pic Power Game....that pretty much sums up where
to make the toss. Great example of an underhand toss.
Hector if you are having the problem of tossing the ball
over your shoulder, you could try to toss the ball with your hand
turned over (so you are holding the ball like you hold a cup)...as opposed to underhand. I find that this hand position gives me more control. OR, you could keep
practicing underhand as the pic above illustrates. It's personal
preference.

Hector, Do not toss at waist level. Sampras did not do so. I'll post a pic if i find one. But here is another one.

yeah, you want to release around shoulder height..

It might be that you are rushing through the motion too quickly. I tend to have jerkness in my tossing arm, and try to fix it for so long.. And my coach kept telling me to slow my tossing arm down. No matter what I did, I couldn't do it...One day after watching him serving, I realized that I had to concentrate on slowing down my ENTIRE body.

My problem was that my right arm was moving fast, and I was trying to slow my left arm down -IMPOSSIBLE THING TO DO.

So why don't you try to slow your entire motion down until you get into launch position, then explode into the ball.

Another tip- try to keep your tossing up arm up as long as possible this will prevent you from THROWING the ball up, rather than placing the ball in the air.

If your balance is off, it would feel awkward to release it at between your shoulder and eyes.
If you make your balance and posture right, and you know
the target location for toss clearly, you'll release it at right
time, naturally, IMHO...

It's nice to see where Safin looks at when he tosses. He actually looks at where he wants the ball to be instead of following the ball with his eyes. Interesting..

Same in the Sampras pic.

The eyes can't really follow easily rapidly-moving objects this close to them.

IMO, his peripheral vision is enough to tell him the ball is taking off, while his focus is on the area of impact, which is much more critical.
