I don't think Stan has the confidence right now to go Stanimal mode. Plus it's an indoor HC.

Might get a close set. Fed in 2. 6-4 6-1 or 6-1 6-4.

Fed is the clear favourite here of course. Still I wouldn't rule out Wawa, he may have his chances if Fed would meet one of his Stinker level matches (it's been quite a while now... )

Normally though, Fed in straights.

This semi will be a free pass. What a shame. Anyone in Djoko's group (Berd or Cilic) would have done better vs Fed.

Watching Wawrinka right now, he's awful. Federer will squash him, but more importantly Tsonga and Monfils will too :-P

Once he won the three games he needed, there was no more motivation for Wawrinka to play against Cilic. He could have won 6-0 6-0 and he still would be heading into the semis against the same opponent.

Why do you care? I thought you said Federer has no chance vs Djokovic?

That doesn't mean I like the idea of him getting a free pass in semi. Although maybe it's good. He's in for a mega shock when he gets to face the king

Maybe so, but if you really believed that Federer had no shot whatsoever against Djokovic you wouldn't be mentioning anything about a free pass.

The truth is, deep in your heart, you know that Federer can beat Djokovic however slim that chance is, so you're just concerned and putting on a brave face over the internet. You can have all the confidence you want, but there's a part of you that's afraid Roger will beat Novak.

LOL, and Djokovic hasn't had a free pass in all of his group matches? Berdych is a basket case, the USO Cilic did not show up and Wawrinka is too inconsistent.

Let's hope it will be you who will be shocked come tomorrow or Sunday and not me. :)

Bingo. Anybody who denies that is lying. She would not be talking about free passes for Federer if she wasn't concerned on some level. She clearly stated that she said that Federer has no chance to beat Djokovic but we all know that is far from the truth even if Djokovic is the clear favorite. Things are usually very tight between them.

Of course Fed could beat Novak but if Novak plays at the level he's shown so far, then he won't. And especially not with a 39% first serve stat oops.

You said the same thing about Kyrgios vs Nadal at Wimbledon. You were positive Nadal would win.

The 39% stat is not great but we know that Federer will probably crank that percentage up vs Djokovic. Let's get real.

As I said a million times I think Djokovic will probably win the title, but you can't rule out Federer 100%.

B-I-N-G-O....

Vero and others : Thanks for your perspective on what might, could, would happen on a Djokovic vs Fed final, but can we keep the posts relevant to this particular match?

I'm hoping Fed wins if Djokovic wins his semi.

If not, then I'll root for Stan because I don't want to see an exhausted Nishikori getting destroyed again.

You wish. Stan will win both his rubbers comfortably.
I don't know what is happening with Stan in some of his ATP matches this year, but when it matters, he will trash a guy like Monfils.
And clay is his best surface, he even beat Roger on clay this year. Monfils will be lucky to get a set if Stan is motivated like he has been for DC.

In what universe are healthy, rested, motivated Fed and Stan going to lose to anybody on the French team on indoor clay? The FFT goofed big time on the surface choice.

Tsonga? He's out of form, and clay neutralizes his power.
Monfils? Will be straight-setted by both Fed and Stan. Federer will be well-rested, and Stan motivated. He hasn't got a chance.
Benneteau? Again, will be lucky to get sets.
Gasquet? What is the FFT smoking?
They're cooked. Where is Simon? At least he has a fighter's chance against Fed and Stan.

Yeah, tell me about it....I don't know why he isn't playing. He was picked to play at the start of the month. Looks like Clement changed his mind. I dunno. Unless I am missing something...

Yep. Clement decided he was happy with a RU finish in DC this year. :)

Don't worry, I'm not (unfortunately )

It's not might, could or would, it's "will" when the only obstacle to it is "other Swiss player"!

I actually don't like this attitude. Sending Fed and Djoker to the final before a day before the semis is not only disrespectful to their opponents, but shows that some people here don't learn.

I mean, gee, just 2 months ago, everyone thought that Fed and Nole will play the USO final, and neither of them ended up reaching it. So, yes, Nishi and Wawa are not looking as good as Nishi and Cilic did in New York, but everything is possible. If Fed can lose indoors to Raonic, then he can lose also to Wawrinka.

after all these years ,, roger still has the mental edge and dominance over his 2nd best of Swiss. Roger will win this in 2 easy sets.

So you are saying the Davis cup match against Golubev didn't matter?

That was vs. a mug with 38% career win percentage. Stan inexplicably loses to mugs but not top guys.
None of the French folks are mugs, even if they don't stand a chance against Fed/Stan.

Also, HC (where Golubev match was played) is not Stan's best surface. That would be clay.
The AO is basically clay, so Stan does well there too.

Even then, Stan could lose one of his rubbers and Suisse would still win.
I doubt Federer will lose a set in his two matches.

With grinder-extraordinaire Simon out, Federer just isn't vulnerable to the players on the French team.

For starters, only Nadalovic can even be expected to beat him more than 10% of the time on any surface.
Maybe Tsonga on a good day, but he's already had his good day for this year, and clay surface = no overpowering for Tsonga.

If Fed beats Tsonga (which he will in straight sets), the French are done.

Lastly, if Federer and Stan decide to have a good day in the doubles, it could get ugly.

Wawrinka lost to GGL in the 1st round of the FO this year. Monfils then proceeded to demolish GGL in the 4th round.
Wawrinka lost to Tommy Haas in the 3rd round of Rome.
Wawrinka lost to Thiem in the 2nd round of Madrid.

It doesn't matter what the stage is. Wawrinka will lose to whoever he wants, whenever he wants.

Talk to you next week then :) IF there is a 5th match between Monfils and Wawrinka I am pretty sure Monfils will win it.
I really hope it will be 2-2 on sunday afternoon so we can have this deciding match.

If Stan can go toe-to-toe with Novak at 8-7 in the fifth set at AO, and in the MC tiebreaker with Roger, he can beat injured Monfils on clay in a pressure situation.

Deciding matches are always fun though!

Stan doesn't seem to be in good form. Unless Federer hits that roller coaster dipping in his form, he should win this in 2 sets.
