Barty hits triple figures as world #1!

She didn't foot fault, but her reaction was over the top for the call, stupid call or not. Imagine if Hingis had told Graf at the French, she'd "shove the ball down your f-ing throat". Gotta think before you speak.
it's funny you used hingis as an example because people treat her like an angel despite her saying 100x worse things in many of her interviews over the years. she was really quite awful saying all kinds of **** about other players.

You're putting a decent effort into engaging with me, but you're wasting your own time.

To be fair to Serena…

Safina and Serena played the AO ‘09 final earlier that year. The result was Serena 6-0, 6-3, match over in 59 minutes.
and then at Wimbledon ‘09, which Serena won, Venus beat Safina 6-0, 6-1 in the SFs.

Safina was great on clay that year but i kinda lean Serena’s way here. No way a world #1 should be absolutely humiliated with bagels like that.
Halep has been so many times.

Just more proof that being #1 is about more than just winning majors. Its about actually doing well the entire season consistently. How many times in the past few years has a player won a major and had pretty inconsistent results outside of it? Then you have Osaka winning majors but having all her issues outside of tennis, etc etc etc. Barty has been able to win majors and solid tournaments outside of them and post consistent results, which is what the rankings reward. All these other multi-major winners she has more weeks then often struggled on a surface, had injuries, had their strengths around specific events, etc etc. The rankings reflect the entire season and are just one metric. But its a metric more about consistency than peaking for the right events.

Barty is number 1 but the field is so bad. Look who is top 5 after Barty in the race.

Barty 42-8 (5 titles including a slam)
Sabalenka 44-16 (2 titles including a premier)
Krejčíková 45-14 (3 titles including a slam)
Pliskova 35-18 (0 titles)
Sakkari 36-18 (0 titles)

Players with 4th and 5th race ranking have 0 titles. For the same in ATP we have below. 2 grand slam champions are not even in top 10 in the race. Osaka is 11th and Raducanu is 18th in the race. In ATP 11th in race is Cameron Norrie and 18th is RBA.

Djokovic (3 slams + 1 title)
Medvedev (1 slam + 1 masters + 1 title)
Tsitsipas ( 2 titles )
Zverev ( 2 masters + 2 titles + OG )
Rublev ( 1 title )

I know most comments will reference Covid as a big thanks to this and it is a factor but she leads the tour with titles won this year with 5 titles across all surfaces:
Yarra Valley - hard
Miami - hard
Stuttgart -clay
Wimbledon - grass
Cincinnatti - hard

That's a slam, 2 Masters/WTA1000 plus 2 WTA500's.

Her 2019 which cemented her top spot was also pretty darn good:
Sydney final
Aus Open SF
Miami title
French Open title
Birmingham title
Beijing final
WTA Finals title

She's the best player on the tour and all she's accomplished this year considering she hadn't been to Australia to see family due to Covid restrictions since February is a huge deal.

This has never been a debate to me. She is the best player in the world since RG 2019 and completely deserves her 3rd YE#1. I don't even know how anyone could argue that.

If anyone disagrees just ask yourself 1 question: name 1 player who is more regular/consistent than her. You can look for a very long time, there is NONE.

This year she wins a slam, 2 Masters1000 titles (+ a final) and 2 WTA500. The other slam winners (Krejcikova, Osaka and Raducanu) have won 0 WTA1000 and 0 WTA500 in comparison.

I mean in saying that, Barty will most likely get her 3rd YE#1 this year unless Sabalenka has a great run to end the year.
Although, looking at 2021, Barty is the clear WTA player of the year.

In terms of the 4 slam champs.
Osaka won the AO and did nothing else
Krejcikova won RG, Strasbourg, Prague, finalist in Dubai, QF in Cincy and Dubai
Barty won Yarra Valley, Miami, Stuttgart, Wimbledon and Cincinnatti.
Raducanu won USO and a 4R at Wimbledon

Nobody really comes close to Barty.
1 slam, 2 WTA1000's, 2 Premier titles + a 1000 runner up

Sabalenka, Muguruza and Swiatek each won 1 WTA1000 and 1 500
Badosa won 1 WTA1000 and 1 250
Krejcikova got a slam and 2 250's
Goaty? Sorry this was plain disrespectful. You can put your point across without being so condescending. Yes, Serena won a ton and when she acknowledged Dinara as number one, she could have done so with a lot more grace. Unfortunately that has never been her forte.

The majors are what defines players (aka the reason they're in the sport); few will ever base a career on other events tacked on to majors, so in that regard, the 4 majors winners of 2021 are are on equal footing.

Hingis was despicable; aside from her numerous slurs against players and groups of people, I recall Evert (covering one of Hingis' matches) saying Hingis was ignorant and needed to be educated. Speaks volumes.

About SW: you will find that some have a dangerous hatred of her and will exaggerate everything she's ever said, despite the fact she no racist/homophobe like Hingis, or a criminal like certain players from a country with a active program to cheat. Nope, its all about Williams and only for one reason, hence the selective memory about Hingis.

Comparing USO champ Raducanu with her 4 main draws this year/her career to Wimbledon champ Barty’s 5 titles and more tournaments played? Don’t feel many will compare the two.

Whatever. Safina was the one runnng around claiming:

"But number one will always stay there. The people will remember you by number one, not by winning a grand slam."

Easly one of the most thick-skulled statements ever made by a player about the game's value. She was so hyper-defensive that her saying no one remembers anyone who won a major crapped all over the history of the sport and its majors winners, all because she lacked the court insight to win a single major.

Eh where was the exaggeration.. She said 'I will take this ball and shove it down in** your [blank] throat'

@45 seconds

Tons worse than what Martina said because uhh English was like Martina's third language and she never threatened to harm someone lol.

I believe they will... maybe it is not based in reality but it will be based in where they want Emma to be in the future.. If Emma is what the hypes states, it will not be too unfeasible to surpass Ashleigh

You can't begrudge Ashley this.

In a post-Serena WTA landscape, where oftentimes winners have come from "left field", then Barty has been pretty solid.
Agreed.. 2020 was weird but she won a major every year since the start, and that's all we can ask for until Naomi comes back

Yup thats a silly statement - however as i reiterated, i am not even talking about achievements. Laughing at a person is not ok - its purely talking about manners. I don’t know whats to debate in that.

I say this as someone who likes Barty - it’s a bit shocking and off putting to see her up there with all those absolute giants and all time greats of the game.
Yes but there’s no one consistent enough to compete for the spot. Gone are the days when we had a bunch of players fighting it out for that spot.

Remember the days when players had to win or reach finals of multiple slams including Safina. It’s not needed anymore.

Pretty much. Winning a major nets you 2000 points, if with that massive amount of points in your favor you still cannot keep yourself in the top 4 I tend to think it, at least somewhat, reflects on you. Winning a major is amazing, but if you do SQUAT outside of it then your ranking isn't going to be impressive.

There are some exceptions, like When clijsters won her return US Open as a WC. Clearly she didn't have the tournament play volume to immediately have a top 4 ranking. But if you play a full schedule, win a major then lose early almost everywhere else...well..thats on you.

BS. Hingis saying Mauresmo "looks like a man" has nothing to do with your imagined language barrier excuse. Hingis criticizing the Williams sisters' hair, etc., had nothing to do with language. She was a despicable POS who spat that kind of crap on a regular basis.

She did not say "looks like a man" and German also wasn't her first language, dum dum! :D You are well known on these forums so I won't waste my time with you.. I obviously do not approve of Serena nor Martina's actions but you are the resident Serenite on his 5th account.

As of this week, Ash Barty joins a select group of just 8 players who have reached triple figures in the WTA number #1 rankings. They are:

Weeks ranked at #1:

1. Steffi Graf - 377
2. Martina Navratilova - 332
3. Serena Williams - 319
4. Chris Evert - 260
5. Martina Hingis - 209
6. Monica Seles - 178
7. Justine Henin - 117
8. Ashleigh Barty - 100
Some.list that and never really thought she was Atg material. big well done to her

Wow where have you been? lol

Hingis knew what she was saying. She was being as disgusting as usual, and she was deservedly called out by many in the sport for saying that about Mauresmo. That's not even going to point out the violent assault and theft she--and her mother commited against Hingis' ex-husband. A criminal in every sense of the word.

The mods can easily see how many accounts you've had on this board, and its three more than the one I've always had. So, go back to hating Serena, or scream at a wall.

Strange, though I like her very much, I don’t think she belongs to the group of players above her in the list.
At least, so far.

Covid has contributed even more to the general overinflation of records.
Tennis can at least now say that the current No.1 in WTA is one of the top 8 of all time and so the sport is at a zenith.
But to what effect? We all know it's a sham.

TRUE! Hingis was an arrogant, nasty B---h. The only time I ever rooted for Graf was after Hingis had her pathetic breakdown in the FO final she lost to Graf.
