The FedPotro rivalry has been renewed this year. This is their 4th meeting of 2017. And also their 3rd meeting in the Basel final and the 4th meeting at Basel overall. We couldn't have asked for a better final at this event.

Federer leads their H2H 17-6. But in Basel, Delpo leads Federer 2-1 and 2-0 in finals. Delpo has proven to be Fed's nemesis at his hometown tournament, as he's the only one to beat Fed in multiple Basel finals.

Will Delpo break Fed's heart in Basel once more? Or will Fed get some revenge over the tower of Tandil?

If Fed wins, this will be the first year since 2007 when Fed wins at least 7 titles in a season.

Insane that this is Fed's 13th final in Basel. :o Has to be the an Open Era record for any tournament.

Federer should make Delpo run in the first few games and then this one will be his. Delpo will tire pretty quickly if he is put under pressure, forced to chase a lot of the balls.

Delpo looks like he is not getting tired anytime soon though.

Federer v Del Potro seems to be the rivalry of 2017 for Fed. His only loss in a slam was to Del Potro, and Federer was pushed the hardest in Shanghai by big man also. Could be tight.

Del Potro in 2, Fed going from mug to non mug here. I remember when he destroyed Goffin in quarters of AO 2016 and then was found out by Djokovic in the semis. Hopefully Del Potro will step up and it will happen again.

I love me some Del Potro, but he's what needs to happen. Fed needs to win this.

Fed to win in easy straights (6-4 i guess, since Del Potro serve is tough to break), and then proceed to play Paris and do well there to keep #1 hopes alive
Del Potro been playing a lot recently, to take one for the team, and then play well in Paris, outplaying Busta so he makes the WTF.

That wasn't how it played out in Shanghai just two weeks ago. Del Po doesn't actually get tired, he merely pretends to be (which is irritating as hell).

Del Po is the only player on tour right now who can just blow Fed off the court. And Fed sometimes plays tentatively/nervously against DP. Annacone has repeatedly stressed this week that Roger is more nervous playing in Basel than even in slam finals. I think this could be a tough and close three-setter unless Fed finally wakes up and starts hitting 90% of rally balls to Del Po's BH.

Still, I think Roger wins 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Spot on!

Del Potro is a mental giant, no doubt. Could a thriller in Basel. At the moment, the only player who can stand up to Fed.

Federer in straight sets. I really don't see who can stop him until the end of the year. His next loss will probably be not before AO 2018.

Oh yeah, forgot about that.

But in each of those runs DelPo has had to go through at least 1 of the Big 4 to get to the Final. More physically taxing

Montreal 2009 - beat Nadal
Olympics - beat Djokovic and Nadal
Shanghai - beat Nadal
IW - beat Murray and Djokovic
IW was the most taxing. It's hard even for the big 4 themselves to beat 3 of them in the same tournament.

Only Hamburg 2008, WTF 2010, and Toronto 2014 are the only instances when it happened.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure Nalbandian also did that in the end of 2007. Maybe in Madrid?

Federer did not play clay, if he did, I am sure you and I would not be having this conversation now.
Not sure how many players could beat him even on clay given the competition. Pretty sure he would have owned the likes of Goffin and Thiem.
