Del Potro in 2, Fed going from mug to non mug here. I remember when he destroyed Goffin in quarters of AO 2016 and then was found out by Djokovic in the semis. Hopefully Del Potro will step up and it will happen again.
Will be wonderful to see Delpotro instantly turn into a mug from being a non-mug if he loses to Federer tomorrow. Thankyou 60s weed!!

How was Delpo hitting that backhand today? I only saw a few games and he sliced all backhands. Can't do that v Fed.

As much as I would love for Del Potro to win (would be in pole position for the last London spot), Federer is the big, big favorite.

I saw some of the match with Cilic. Sliced a lot, but on BP in 1st set he absolutely blasted a BH CC return. Seemed to be a bit more wary than in recent matches, although to be honest with Cilic you don't even need a BH, he usually just beats himself.

Yeah I was thinking it could just be a tactical decision vs Cilic. Cilic makes more errors when he's got to generate all the pace, so junkballing backhands and attacking forehands seems like a good mix.

He has 4 loses in a whole year, 2 in tournaments nobody cares about. And he stopped losing finals completely. Only Zverev managed to beat him in a final.

Just proves how good Zverev will be in future. Did what even Nadal couldn't do.

I wonder if Fed could increase his chances at YE#1 by losing. I think this is actually the case.

How so ? Let me guess. Is it because if Delpo wins here, he will still have a fighting chance to make the WTF and he could beat Nadal at the WTF (in the RR stage or SF) limiting the no. of points Nadal could get ?

Here is Federer's full quote about @Simona_Halep being year-end No. 1 without winning a Grand Slam title:

The natural final. Delpo has the game to make this a thriller.
Commentators say that Fed didn't play well against Mannarino, but played well against Goffin. I disagree: very simplistic and inconclusive way to see the game, IMHO.
Goffin has a straightforward game, good angles, but no sliced backhand, zero net game, no dropshots, forget S&V.
Mannarino can hit flat, sliced and topspinned FH, loves to do a dropshot once in a while, goes to the net, uses BH with much more variety and has a active mental attitude for every point of the game. He will even S&V.
Mannarino will make the opponent doubt of his shots because of his attention on court. Then of course, on the other side of the net there is Roger Federer, that as a champion and a genius, will find his way to get into the match, and will win it, but not without a battle.
Delpo is a Mannarino but with bigger weapons. Mentaly more solid and always intense throughout the match. His sliced BH is so well excuted that it became a safe zone for him. He will do everything Mannarino does but with more power and with one of the best FH of the tour.

There is a lot at stake in this match. Roger can still become year end #1, and for Delpo very important points for the race. And of course it's Roger's home, and he wants to do well.

My bet is Roger Federer in 3 very intense sets.

Wow, he's obviously changed his tune about this since he once had a pop at Jelena Jankovic for reaching world #1 without winning a Slam! ;)

Interesting also that he thinks that "the Slams actually reward and give too many points away". This is in stark contrast to a recent comment by Chris Evert who thinks that Slams should be awarded more points!

This will be their first meeting in the final of Basel since 2013. Del Potro is 2-1 vs Federer in Basel and won both back to back finals they played there in 2012 and 2013. If anybody has the credentials to take the Maestro on in his home tournament it has got to be Del Potro! Plus he will come into the match as the only player to have beaten Federer in a Slam this year (quarter-final of US Open) and taking their most recent encounter to the distance (semi-final of Shanghai).

If both come into this match all guns blazing we could be in for a real blockbuster!!

Federer is like a million times better than in 2012, leave alone 2013.

Sounds like you're licking your lips already mate. :)

forgot that about Jankovic, but yes about Evert, just posted that this week...seems like he's just getting caught up to date on some differences between tours..maybe needs to think a little more about it :)

Hmm, I'm pretty sure Nalbandian also did that in the end of 2007. Maybe in Madrid?

Nadal in the quarterfinals, Djokovic in the semifinals, and Federer in the final.

Then in the next master series he managed to beat Federer in the round of 16 and Nadal in the final.

Delpo has been starting slowly a lot this year.

But he has to take the first set against Fed, and I don't think that's going to happen unless Fed comes out stone cold and serves badly.

Delpo is very much able to beat Fed on this court.

But Roger has seemed as though he is on a mission. Delpo has played a lot of matches recently, and I don't think he usually deals with that so well.

Fed is surely the favourite. As much as I like Delpo, I'd love to see Roger come out blasting and take this in two sets. Would surely increase the chance of seeing him in Paris.

But I more likely JMDP gets at least one set here.

Great to see them both in the final anyway.

God Potro desperately needs to win this match:
1. Tsonga a lock in Vienna final and has a better draw in Paris. If Delpo loses he has to go a round further in Paris. Tsonga fully capable of making SF or beyond in Paris as he beat both Goffin and Cilic in Marseille earlier this year.
2. Busta has a cake draw in Paris and a QF appearance for him in Paris would force Delpo to need a final to make WTF and Tsonga SF

With a win over Fraud Delpo has the lead over PCB and Tsonga entering Paris.:p

Miracle win if Delpo pulls this off and probably saves WTF to boot.:D

If Fed looked like he did against Mannarino then Del Potro will win. If he looked like how he did today then Fed will take it.

Didn't he want to beat him badly at the 2009 WTF too? We all know how that turned out.

no, he wanted to troll Murray in the 2009 YEC.
Hence losing from 3 all in the 3rd set. Had BPs on delpo's serve. Did not take those.
Then got broken with a below par service game.

2012 RR - he had qualified already IIRC.

In 2013, when he really needed to qualify for the semi, he fought back and won in the 2013 RR match.

---

having said that, delpo is a threat in his USO-current form, no doubt.

Both are tied 4-4 in the indoor H2H, of course two of those Delpo's wins were gifts from Federer.

Basel 07 - fed
Madrid 08 - fed
YEC 09 - delpo
Rotterdam 12 - fed
Basel 12 - delpo
YEC 12 - delpo
Basel 13 - delpo
Paris 13 - fed
YEC 13 - fed

its 5-4 fed.
Stupid ATP site has Madrid 08 as clay instead of indoor HC.

Another cheap win, Federer just wanted to troll Ferrer in that Masters.

I highly doubt he trolled Murray on purpose.

Saw this on twitter. "First player in ATP open era to make 13 finals at a single event."

Federer also is the first male player with 700+ wins on a single surface. But a troll on here claimed Federer isn't "hyper strong" on any surface. I can only imagine if Federer was "hyper strong" on hard courts.:D
If Federer was "hyper strong" on hard courts, he'd surely beat their favourite player a hell of a lot more times. [emoji6]

As funny as it was I'm pretty sure Fed didn't have his calculator out during the changeovers thinking how to screw Murray over

I simply want a very quick match, which would make it more likely that Federer plays Paris.
I don't want him to play Paris. He messed up at the USO because of Montreal, so I don't want him to mess up his WTF chances because of Paris.
Agree 100% on skipping Paris, but he's going to have no way out (without looking ridiculous) because this will be a beat down of poor Delpo and his WTF hopes.:(

This is like Auz Open or something right now for this match; the handwringerers are out in force. Do you really think 2012/2013 relevant as Fed's form far superior now?:p
