By the way, when was the last time Fed won a match like this in which he made so many silly errors? I feel like this is a match he would have lost in prior years playing like this. His clutchness and self-belief have improved in 2017.
Yes, this year he looks close to unbeatable. Doesn't matter how tough matches are, he just wins in the end. He has only 2 losses in tournaments players care about. Even if Nadal will end number one Federer still had the much better year.

That's seriously disgusting to be compared to her. Really offensive and totally inaccurate. Why not compare me to Mao, Stalin and Hitler why you're at it?
His twin sister is comparing me to those two all the time as well.
We are really awful people, arent we? :p

And btw, kudos to you for being one of the very few reasonable posters in here who actually has a clue what Roger is saying and planning, plus see things clear about his injuries and such. I see you get some hassle from fellow Fed fans now and then.

oh, come on. He'd be dumb to play that now.

they should re-schedule it if possible.

else fed should skip it.
he def. should, but the man likes his exo's. I mean - why on earth schedule it in that week anyhow? Better after London.
I don't think we'll be seeing Delpo at the O2 this year. A pity, because he is one of the few players who can beat a well playing Nadal/Federer indoors.
Agree - he would be the 2nd favorite for me if he get there and ain't too tired of so much tennis the past 4-6 weeks.

Against Ferrer in Montreal 2017?

It is indeed, I had been trying to bet on Pouille as the semifinalist in that quarter, but the bookies I could find didn't have that bet yet. Presumably because they were waiting for Fed to make his decision. He could go all the way to the final the way he's playing
Im trying not to money bet on my fav. Lol. As I often make wrong biased bets like that
I honestly thought Tsonga would win today. But of course hoped for Luca. His first 500 win!
Fed out of the way in Paris makes his draw look so so much better! :D

Andy Murray. The same Andy Murray who freaking withdrew AFTER the USO draw came out, effectively jeopardizing Federer's chances there by making him no.3 seed and gifting Nadal a slam. And he now will play this exho with Federer so Federer can bid goodbye to his campaign for #1 ranking and Nadal gets another gift.:D
That Andy Murray indeed. mury goat

If that's your premise, then the Berdych and Kyrgios matches at Miami 2017 could qualify.

Federer wasn’t close to losing to Ferrer at Montreal because Ferrer never had MP in that match. Losing the first set is not close to losing. LOL! Berdych DF into the doubles alley to lose. Kyrgios lost when DF after having MP. Both folded mentally.

Mike Danny asked about a match that Federer won while "he made so many silly errors", not if Federer was about to lose.
Also, Kyrgios never had MP against Federer in Miami 2017.

I think Kyrgios had a chance at MP when he DF after he missed a shot where a fan made an sound during the rally. Give Federer a break, the guy is not emotionless. Sure, he was making uncharacteristic errors in his match with Del Potro. Playing Basel makes Fed nervous.

Thank you so much Roger for fighting hard! You have been inspiration for me this year. So many happy moments. It breaks my heart you will be not be number one in the ranking...you are number one for me! I worry about your matches with Juan Martin. He has been so dangerous for your career and you still found a way to win today! Please rest and be ready for WTF. I think you will give us one more special moment in 2017. :)

@abmk

@NatF

This win fractionally puts Federer ahead of Connors for lifetime winning percentage which is a great achievement. It obviously may change but it's still incredible.

yeah, his winning% has almost always been on the rise since he hit his prime (since he was pretty inconsistent pre-prime).

BTW, going by official ATP stats ,
Federer is : 1129-249 (81.93%)
Connors is : 1256-279 (81.82%)

TennisBase has :
for ATP tournaments: 1264-279 (81.92%)
for all tournaments : 1527-350 (81.35%)

I didn't think he was about to lose, but that possibility was clearly there at 4 all, 30-all in the 2nd set.
But it was skill that got him through, not luck.
I see your point, but I'm sure you have days when everything goes wrong, and there is really no logical reason for it.

Usually Fed breaking the first game of the first set is a horrible sign for the guy he's playing against. Seeing Delpo break back so easily seemed weird. Then other weird stuff happened, like the end of the TB. I have to think WAY back to remember a match were Fed looked like he wanted to break his racket, or scream. Remember that big swat at the net?

Then the three double faults in one game.

So maybe "luck" is totally the wrong word. Regardless, for awhile it looked like the Tennis Gods had a voodoo doll and were sticking pins in it.

And maybe I'm not giving him enough credit for turning things around on a bad day.

But it really did look like a bad day, until things finally flipped at the end of the 2nd set.

On the other thought though, I think I might be right. Delpo's BH was very strong for a couple sets, and at least for a good part of the match Fed was not having much luck attacking it. That said, he also had a bunch of UEs. Part of the match reminded me of the Mannarino match, and it was kind of schizo because at other times he was ripping off some incredible ground strokes.

It just seems to me that you live a little too vicariously through Federer and talk like you are in Federer's head. You are in Octobrina territory at times! ;)

I just think that he has little to lose to try to go for the ye#1 as I doubt he'll have the opportunity again. But I'm fine with whatever he decides. If he feels it will affect his chances of winning the WTF, he knows best.

I look at it differently. Beatles gets emotional at times and has strong views that don't necessarily reflect the consensus, but if anything, that's what sets him apart from the usual. His posts almost always tend to be well thought-out.

To compare him with octoberina is a bit strong and I'm surprised to read that. I wouldn't compare anyone on here with the octoberina's,ghostofagassis, and clayqueens of this world. Disagreeing with ones posts is one thing but he's a reasonable poster and grouping him with any one of that bunch is really harsh.

Im with you, though. I felt disappointed when they announced that Federer dropped out of Paris. I would have loved to see a Fedal match, and it would have been amazing to see him go for a clean sweep of the indoor circuit to end the season.

Ok, that's fair. Yes, grouping him/her with Ocboberina/TheGhostofAgassi type posters was probably a little severe.

Gary seems like he’s trying to hard, like it’s an agenda.

There are a lot of those on here who take on an insidious approach and have an agenda, but they're pretty easy to spot. This man isn't one of them. If you've seen his post history or have a good idea of what he usually posts I'm not sure how you can arrive at that conclusion. He might be a Nadal fan but I don't think I've necessarily read anything overly disparaging that he's ever written about Fed.

The ones that do are easy to spot, though.

Haha, yeah mate. I think that's your frustration from having read that GOATERER just gave up the chase for the world #1. Tbf, I think a lot of us Federer fans are a little sad as well.

Honestly, you have nothing to be sad about. Federer has done more than anyone could have possibly imagined. After his incredible run to the number one ranking by winning his 7th Wimbledon, he really had nothing to prove to anyone anymore. This year, I read a lot of threads, when I was catching up from when I was away from the boards, that all they want is for Federer to win that 18th slam, and don't care what happens after that, whether he ever wins again or not. Not only did he win the AO with one the most difficult draws ever, a path of four top ten players, but he beat his greatest nemesis in probably the most dramatic way possible to claim it. It was something out of a Rocky Movie, just with tennis...then proceeds to win another three times against Nadal, without dropping a set, or even get broken, completely turning the H2H match up on its head, and emphatically answering the question...Can Federer figured out Nadal? Perfect record against Nadal this year, who himself was in form and had multi slam season.

He wins Wimbledon without dropping a set, for the first time ever, and breaks the tie for most Wimbledon titles, and has his first multi slam season at 35-36, pushes his slam tally to 19 slams, and now has two different surfaces where he won a slam without dropping a set. He is first player to win 10 slams on a particular surface, by having five AO titles added to his five USO titles. He won Halle and W without dropping a set for the first time. By winning W, he now has the longest gap between winning the first slam to his current last, an incredible 14 years...He does not have a negative H2H against anyone in the top ten this year, and won his 8th Basel title and vanquishing the man who had beaten him there in two previous finals, in the process became the first man to contest 13 finals at the same event.

All of this was done because he respected the age of his body, understanding when was the time to strike and when to stop. He doesn't need the year end number one, what he has done this year is simply unheard of, and the manner in which he did it truly solidified his status as the man who stands at the top of the mountain, and he did all this while Nadal himself was having the most consistent year of his life, which makes it extra special.

I understand that fans will always look for the next sweet dish, but you also know, Federer is human, even if he does superhuman things.

My bad! Never knew that. Thanks for that.

No problems.

Fed won a lot this year, but this win was terrific. Impressive how he brought intesity to another level at the end of 2nd set and third set (apart from getting broken in 1st game).
I think it was normal that with Delpo UEs would go up. You never play 'free' against Delpo, and Fed has lot of respect for his game.
Fed will end season #2. Pity he doesn't play Paris. Probably the right decision. Win the WTF will be the cherry on the cake.
I put Fed as 2018 year end #1, and pass 100 tournyes won.
