Basel TD: “I can contact Dj....Murray....Nadal....but with Roger it's not possible..”

Basel tournament director Roger Brennwald discusses his event's relationship with Roger Federer, and says the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on his appearance fee for the October tournament.

Former Basel ball boy Federer has played his hometown tournament 13 times and won it five times, but his contract with the event expired after last year. While Federer recently said he intends to play Basel even without a contract, there has been discord on both sides. The tournament just announced it has signed Rafael Nadal to play this year.

"Roger has always [been our] top priority,” Brennwald told the Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger. “We have launched campaigns in the millions for him and allowed him to promote his sponsors, which is not very common. We are grateful for the time we were allowed to have with him. The thing is very simple: We have made an offer to him, which he refused. We have submitted a second offer, which he has not responded to. We do not normally pay a seven-figure [appearance fee].”

Brennwald also complained that he is unable to speak with Federer directly and always has to go through his agent Tony Godsick.

“We actually speak the same language, but with Godsick it's not fun," he said. "I've never seen anything like it. I can contact Djokovic or Murray if I want. I have spoken personally with Nadal. But with Roger it’s not possible.”

Does Roger have a personality problem?
 
Federer doesn't come across as the most approachable person. Having said that, it's Godsick's job to take that call.
But having said that, i actually think Fed should part ways with Godsick.
Godsick is a bad influence imo.
 
Fed has his own priorities and owes nothing to nobody, most likely it's the other way around. Rodge is treating this TD the same as any other TD so this Brennwald guy is being stupid to come out and whine about money and contact issues.

Now that this issue is public, it makes both sides look bad. I think both Brenwald and Federer/the fed team are putting pressure on each other with this statement.

Federer mentioned a few days ago that he is playing Basel even without an agreement, which cast a bad light on the organizer. Now they are trying to shift it back to Federer.

gamesmanship by the TD... very low imo... he can reach the agent.. deal with the agent.
 
Fed skipped paris-bercy(lost 1000 points) last year to play in Basel and has said he doesnt need a contract to play this year so i dont understand the problem with the TD.If roger dosent need any app fees to play he(TD) should be happy right?
 
Umm is there anything wrong with talking to an agent? Isn't that what they are for? I think Roger has more important things to deal with than contacting all the tournament directors

Precisely, even many of us have secretaries who have to be contacted for appointments.

(I wish mine was single, though).
 
If Brennwald wants to talk to Roger then he should STOP spreading rumours about him. A few days ago, he called Roger while he was in a press conference and then went out to the media to complain about how Roger refused to receive his call. Pathetic ***. Last year, he went off on a holiday right in the middle of the tournament. How about trying to live up to his duties as a TD for a change?

He thinks by whining to the press and giving Roger a bad name, he can get Roger to accept his demands and get him to sign a long-term contract. This is blackmail of the worst kind. Pathetic. I've never seen a TD run to the press for everything.
And if he's so pleased with Nadal, Djokovic and Murray why not have them in the tournament? Why is he running behind Roger if he can't stop whining about him? Roger has better tournaments to play.

Seriously, this TD is behaving as though he is still talking about the ball boy Federer.

He probably didn't know his name until Fed came out of age and started to make an impact. Probably Brennwald likes to think of Roger as his former ball boy and somewhat related to him so much so, that he can ask for personal favours.

I can see Federer being grateful to the people, that allowed him to rise to the top and wanting to give back, but when they start to push their luck ......
 
Obviously I, just like anyone else, don't know the details of what's really going on between them. But damn, this TD is annoying me. Federer said he'd play. It's still half a year till Basel. The TD is whining as if Federer hasn't replied to his birthday party invite yet while it starts in a few hours.
 
A good reason Federer isn't looking to sign another long contract is he is going to retire within the next couple of years.
