basketball peaked in the 80`s

Not just inside US frontiers, with the NBA and NCAA reaching unparalelled levels of excellence and excitment and leading to the greatest team ever assembled, the 1992 Olympic Team and the greatest NCAA team ever seen, the LA Olympics one in 1984...but basically Internationally

Yougos and Soviets national teams shared domination and power with the US, and their vast amount of talent, game fundamentals knowledge and athleticism has no equal among current international teams, be them Spain ( the best of the non US teams yet far from the Yougo/Soviet teams of the whole 80´s),France,Argentina or Greece.

We also had very competitive and talented teams in Canada,Brasil and Italy in that magical decade where hoops became a truly world wide force, much like tennis 10 yrs before.Spain and emerging Australia were also very competitive teams, so you basically had three monster teams and five secondary teams that had some (even if rare) options to achieve a win against any of the top three at Olympic or World Cup level.

And don´t ever forget that for every current Lithuania ( then part of the USSR),Turkey or Serbia ( then part of Federal Yugoslavia) there was a Puerto Rico,Israel/Panama,Czechoslovakia, so the comparison still holds well.

Please, discuss.

If the NBA ALL STAR TEAM of 92 had been created in 1987 or 1988, when all the players were near their prime...what do you think would be their differential score vs the 2012 team witch had all their members at their peak?

Exposed for knowing nothing about basketball. The 2012 team had 5/12 at most in their peak (lebron melo chandler cp3 iggy) chandler and iggy are prob past their peak at this point but I'll give them to you since it's close. everyone else was before (harden Westbrook ad love Durant) or after (dwill kobe). Wade and howard were hurt so didn't play. Harden Westbrook and ad this year at at completely different levels then they were during the Olympic run. (They were solid top 25 players but this year they're MVP candidates)

OK, fit in Wade&Howard and whomever you like, and supose it is the 2008 team ( instead of 2012) vs the 88 team (instead of 92)...now move on and state which is your result

The 2012 team would win for sure. People like to get nostalgic about the past, but the reality is that players are bigger, stronger, faster athletes today. The previous generation wouldn't compete...

That might be ture, same as the NHL which peaked in the late 80s to 95. Than the truly bad happened, the New Jersey Devils introduced the trap to the league and it was lights out.

´The early 80´s brought us the two most brilliant teams at NCAA level:

Braddock,Jordan,Worthy,Perkins and Wolf
Alvin,Franklin,Young,Micheaux and Olajuwon

Pistons changed basketball for ever.No more flashy coast to coast or pick and roll.No more individualistic but a dirty, industrial, working class, utmost team oriented basketball that set the mark for the next generations, specially the athleticism. Now, their atittude and trash talking has not gone forwards.

As a team, probably the most compact of all time.No other team had that complementarity AMONG 9-10 players¡¡¡ a true compressing machine
