Battle by the Border: Matt Lin vs. San Diego

Maximagq has just informed me that he will be in San Diego sometime after August 15th and might have time for a hit. Suresh, Navigator, RKelly, and any San Diego based players that are interested in some pandemonium please check in here.

Also, my new neighbor is a 5 time national champion of Latvia. He's 18 now. He's a great player. I'll ask him if he wants to join.

Let's do this!

I just replied to the email from Matt to us. I will be here. I will be glad to make arrangements. I can get one court of course at my club, but with proper arrangement and luck, I can probably get one more adjacent to it, specially if it is a lean time. Of course, you guys can find other courts too, but we have lighted ones, with restroom and water and benches.

Are those courts guaranteed available or FCFS? I can only guarantee 1 court at my place, but probably can get two. Plus, we will be surrounded by tennis all around.

FCFS. But are avail 98% of the time. I've only had to wait a few times. But you're place is fine. Mine could be a backup.

I hope the weather holds. This weekend it rained like crazy. We need the rain, but sometimes Matt is more important.

We can arrange for LeeD to fly down by this:

I'd like to see a video of Maximagq playing 1 set each against Cheetah Navigator & the Latvia champ.

How is everything going in SoCal these days, anyway? Pretty nice and quiet or just the usual droughts, wildfires, and hydraulic fracturing?

Lots of heavy rain in SD this week. I guess mother nature wants all the flowers out in time to welcome VIP MattLinkovic here for the Battle by the Border©. It's also bringing the scorpions out from hiding.

^^ This is just about as uncomfortable from a heat/humidity standpoint as I can ever remember it here (at least Santa Ana conditions are bone dry)... reminds me of summers back in 'Ole Virginny (but not that bad, of course)...

Hm, sounds like fun actually. I could probably fly out before late August, also. But can't do it after the 24th because I have to be around when the first day of school starts. Although with my luck, I'd fly out and it would rain the entire time and there would be zero access to any indoor courts. I guess we'd have to settle for beer and sports bars, then. Not a bad alternative.

Weird weather. I played three sets this morning. It was drizzling on us as we warmed up but then it dried out before we played. Still very humid, though it isn't as hot on the North Coast today as it was yesterday. If this rain keeps up, people will be clamoring for indoor courts.

I realize we are in a terrible drought, but it is the winter rain and snowfall in the mountains that we need.

This rain is keeping the wildfires tame and controllable in the Sierras. A little moisture, as long as lightning doesn't touch ground, is a good thing. Every fire dept is happy for the sporadic rain we've gotten this past week.

Yeah, it is going to be OK down here as long as it doesn't dry out too much and give us a late summer grow season to create a lot of new brush for the coming fires.

It is also making the ocean dirty, though I haven't gone out recently. LeeD, you should consider coming down here just to be able to surf without a wetsuit, but I'm sure that the waves are going to be a bit smaller than what you're used to. I don't see many windsurfers along the coast here, but I've seen kite-boarders in the past.

Water temps around here are around a record 59, around 4 warmer than normal. Little NW winds to cause upwelling.
I doubt I can handle Blacks at 6', unless you remove the crowds. Not surfing, and getting old, has ruined my ability to surf in decent surf with hustling crowds.
Surfing without a wetsuit for me is no big deal. I've done maybe 10 surfing trips to Oahu and Kaui, now 5 to Puerto Rico.
Windsurfing sorta died everywhere. In the '90's, we once counted 150 windsurf cars at Larkspur on a windy weekend. There might now be 6. I worked at a windsurf shop then.
I still have 3 wave windsurf boards in the garage. One more in the basement. But surfsailing is a fickle lady, needing a perfect combination of windspeed, wind direction, swell size and direction, long period, and correct tides for the spot, and it has to coincide with early afternoon timing! Lots of fickle factors to come together.
Still haven't surfsailed a decent spot in SoCal, have sailed Bolca Chica, Pacific Beach, Santa Monica so far.
Best spot ever for me so far is Revelations, or outside Velzyland. There, it's a combo of at least 10 bottom turn/off the lip moves, before reaching the outside of Velzy and the pack of longboard mokes.

Blacks is a pretty heavy wave for socal. 6' in Del Mar is like 3' at Blacks.

LeeD, come to Bali. Warm waters and lots of good breaks. July/Aug is usually windy season, but still offshore on the west coast.

Agree. I was in Aruba this year, which is supposed to be one of the Meccas of the Caribbean. There must have been 4 windsurfers out there, and gusts could reach 30 knots. I was using a 3.7 a couple of days.

First time I was there in the 90s, same month (May) there used to be way more windsurfers. Of course, these days we have kiters in the same place...

Where do you play? Send me a message through TT and I will add you to the email list for the event.

I play mostly at Balboa and on Coronado. You can reach me at: dmoore (at) mch-inc (dot) com. (Hopefully I'll evade the email searching bots.)

Sureshs vs Matt...yeah, that will be fun to watch. o_O

Why do we want to watch Matt beat up on people way lower than him anyway? I don't understand.

Obviously you don't understand because nowhere does the OP mention anything about watching anything. Reading comprehension... Look into it.

I'll have my camera and will record. Matt might have his 4k gear. I'm just saying the thread wasn't necessarily about watching anything.

OBVIOUSLY I was assuming it would be recorded like the last Matt vs Lee or Sureshs vs You fiasco.

No need for the sarcasm pal.

East Indians....
Today met a guy who's training to try to become a member of the India Olympics windsurfing team, on RSX boards. His coach was with him, Mike Gebhardt, who won silver around 6 years ago or so, in the Olympics for USA. First thing Mike says to me, "I know that jibe anywhere"... and I haven't seen him in easily 15 years. We used to race in the Gorge Cups, Stroh's World Cups (San Francisco), Flying Tiger's Slalom Series, and
Santa Cruz Surf Slalom series against each other...and 50+ different other competitors, of course. That would be around the late '80's.
I didn't recognize him, because he was in his 20's when I knew him, but I was in my 40's by then, so I haven't changed as much. He must be mid 40's by now, or older. Told my g/f that I have the same exact smile I had in the '80's.

Why don't you become his coach?

Used to watch Vijay play in several tournaments around here, very impressed. His little brother's were just smaller and weaker, but had great names.

Suresh, as regards your post 46.
1. I don't coach any sport.
2. Gebby is a two time US Olympian in windsurfing, one bronze, then one silver.
3. Those boards they use, the RSX, are 35 lbs. and as wide as your front door, if your front door is 40" wide. The windsurf boards i ride are closer to funboard surfboards, like half the size.
