Battle by the Border: Matt Lin vs. San Diego

Good catch. He certainly look like he's holding wind in. Luckily, no one is standing behind him.

That also explains why that lizard is looking so silly, it's the sudden lethal gust of methane.
Whereas breathing in Helium makes people talk like a pixie, breathing in Methane makes them talk like a Rhode Island longshoreman. So many obscenities... :(

So I am not the only one wondering.

How did Gulbis do? He's been working with Stefanki as his new coach.

Was he using his new short-takeback forehand?

Larry was there. He gestured once to Gulbis to take a short loop on the forehand (during practice), and Gulbis shadowed that a couple of times, but most of the time he stuck to his longer take back, but not as long as before. His forehands are immensely powerful, though. From the short-range, I could appreciate how fast they were.

Basically, Gulbis won the singles and doubles for the Aviators (they won)

Murphy Jenson was the coach for the Kastles. Before the match, and after his team had practiced, he decided to practice his leftie serves. I don't know why, since he wasn't playing. He took about 10 from each side, and his height and strength helped him hit serves which would still be pro-level today, if not actually faster then those of many pros playing now. Every single one crashed into the fence, which was certainly not what the team players were able to do.

BTW, he seems to really as wacky as his image is.

Good win for the Aviators and good job by Ernie!

How were Gulbis and Raven Klaasen as a team in the doubles? Klaasen has really solid hands at net and has been serving well this year. Better than last year. Raven was responsible for the win when I saw the team play NY Empire on Friday. His serve and net play was responsible for more winners than Harrison, and of course, than Jurak, but the mixed doubles is mostly about setting the men up for put-aways.

Found highlights from the match at the Aviators' website.

The venue (La Costa) is really a nice place to watch tennis. All the seats are close to the court and give a good idea of ball speed and spin.
