I'm thinkin about driving down to Carmel Valley Ranch to hit on the hard-tru clay courts next weekend. I went there a couple of time last summer and I had a lot of fun. Great, secluded location, nice fascilities, awesome food, friendly staff... all of us had a ton of fun there

Anyway, I'm looking for 2 people (4.0 - 4.5 NTRP) who would like to hit at CVR. If you are interested, please leave a message or email me, jasonlee at berkeley dot edu

Last time we went, we were really lucky to hit their promotional weekend. There were 4 of us and we paid $20 each, and we get to play on the two clay courts for the ENTIRE DAY! Yes, $20 for the whole day, from 8am to 5pm, unbelieveable deal

Basically, we left Palo Alto at 7am, got to CVR by 10am and hit for 2 hours in the morning, got some lunch, and resumed hitting by 1:30pm. We hit for another 3 hours or so, then we hit up the Gilroy Outlet for some new tennis gears!

I am calling CVR tomorrow to see if I can get the same deal again

Thats sad you guys have to drive 3 hours to play on clay. I have a clay court 5 minuets down the road and grass 30 minuets away. Hard Courts everywhere, even one next door to my house, a nice one with light.

Carmel Trip on Sunday, November 13th

Thanks for those who emailed me. Here is an update:

Ok, so I got a sweet deal: $40 court fee for up to 4 people, so only $10 per person, from 830am to 4pm!!

I will be driving to Carmel from downtown Berkeley on Sunday, November 13th, and two of my buddies will be coming with me. Daniel is about a 4.5, Fernando is a 4.5 on a good day but 3.5 on a bad day, and myself, who is a 4.0

Anyway, we are looking for an extra person who would be interested for this day trip. Here is our preference:
1. someone who can meet us at my place in Berkeley on Sunday morning
2. someone who is around our age (we are all 21 years old college kids)
3. someone who is NTRP 4.0 or 4.5

We will be stopping by Gilroy Outlet (Nike, Addidas, Puma, and tons of other stores) on the way back.

The cost (individually) will be $10 for the court fee, about $8 for lunch and $10 for gas.

Email me if you interested in this excited trip!
jasonlee@berkeley.edu

Thanks!

Sure bro, if you would be willing to fly back to the bay from Methuen, MA :)

So Sunday Morning huh? To follow up:

1) I'm in Antioch or San Jose, depending on circumstances
2) 26 years old
3) I've never been rated but people who play USTA regularly say I'm a 4.0/4.5.

The weather sucks right now in norcal, but it should pick up by the weekend.

Oh yeah, Fee don't tempt me with shopping for tennis gear! I just got done shopping at Niketown this past weekend (thanks to a cool TW member for hooking up the 40% discount) and I don't want to drop more money on gear!

By the way, is anyone bringing a camera?

My review of CVR:

I had a lot of fun at the Carmel Valley Ranch last Sunday. We left Berkeley at around 6:30am and got to Carmel by 9am, while stopping at Gilroy's McDonald for breakfast (at 7:30am). Gilroy is the midpoint between Berkeley and Carmel, and it has some cool stores and cheap gas, so we always stop by there.

Anyway, we had access to both clay courts in the back of the resort, which was more than enough for 4 of us. We hit from 9 to noon and took a break, then resumed hitting from 1pm to 4:30pm. Believe me, that was a lot of tennis! For only $20!!!!! I really enjoy playing on clay, because the courts are a lot slower, the points are longer, and I felt like I got more exercise (compared to Hard courts) because I was sprinting toward the net for the drop shots and falling on my butt. Definately good times, Can't wait to go back!

As for the expense of the trip, I spent about $40 for the entire day, including court fee, gas (round trip), lunch and breakfast. Not a bad deal at all! I'm definately willing to drive down there again during the winter break. There are cabins for rent, right by the clay courts, so we should definately get a cabin and play on clay all weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is that shot? A baseline volley?? LOL.

I'll be in the bay area for most of december, if you are planning another trip, I'd love to go. And even if you're not, I'm looking for people to hit with. Just beware with my combatting tennis elbow, sometimes I play like the much maligned pusher on these boards  Oh wait, that's not tennis elbow, I do that sometimes anyways cuz it's fun to frustrate the other guy...hehe. But now with tennis elbow I have an even better reason to do it even more often :p

P.S. Are you a UCB student? Go bears!

Yes, beers are nice too, especially with a meal from Pyramid brewery. Although Berkeley is blessed with quite a few knarly breweries, so it can be tough to decide which one to go to!

I'll be in Fremont, and does it matter why I'm there? You want to play tennis or not?? LOL.

I'm there for the holidays to visit family. The company I work for is out there so I guess I'll be going into the office to work too!

Nice Nike Advantage Crew shirt! I've got a few myself. :D

However, it looks like you could use a bit of work on that forehand. ;) LOL.

I stayed at the Carmel Valley Ranch myself for a vacation over Halloween and that place is awesome. I hit with the pro when I was there as well, but I never saw any clay courts, we hit on hard courts by the pool. Must've missed 'em somewhere. But if you plan on staying at the resort your prices are going to go up quite a bit. It was around $200 a night to stay there or thereabouts.

My forehand and my Calf are a lot prettier than my Nike shirt, BreakPoint, it's just the angle of the photo that makes my shot look sort of awkward.

Hey guys, Tony and I are driving down to Carmel Valley on July 4th to hit on the clay courts, we can take 2 more players. I am a 4.0 and Tony is better than me (just a little bit better :) ). I'm driving from Berkeley to pick up Tony in Alameda on the way down to Carmel. If you are interested please respond. The fee is only 20 dollars for the entire day!

Are you referring to the "Over the tracks" hard courts run by the city? How is that place?

If you like red clay, New Yorkers (or anyone visiting the city) can play at Riverside Clay at Riverside Park and 97th st. for a mere 7 bucks(www.rcta.info. It's windy because it's next to the Hudson River and noisy because it's next to the West Side Highway, but it's a gorgeous location and the courts are very well maintained. Busy on weekends, but not hard to get a court during week days.
