"Located in south-east Romania, Bucharest is the nation's capital city and industrial and commercial centre. The Palace of the Parliament is the largest building in Europe and the second largest in the world."

"Local favourite Victor Hanescu will attempt to capture the title on his seventh appearance in Bucharest. The 28 year old reached the final in 2007 (l. to Simon) and has reached the quarter-finals (or better) three more times. Igor Andreev will make his fifth appearance, having reached back-to-back finals in 2004 and 2005, finishing runner-up to Jose Acasuso and Florent Serra respectively. Florent Serra has a stellar 10-3 tournament record, having captured the title on debut in 2005 (d. Andreev) and reached the semi-finals the following year (l. to Volandri). Nicolas Almagro - a winner of five clay-court titles in his career - will hope to improve on his previous three performances in Bucharest, having never advanced past the second round."

Cheering for Monaco but I think Hanescu takes the title with the support of the Romanian crowd.

Update.............................................
2mrv9g3.jpg

Pico Monaco d. qualifier Julio Silva 62, 64

Sorry to see another early exit by Andreev, d. by the qualifier Santiago Ventura! :(

There's another qualifier who appears to be doing well so far, namely, Filippo Volandri, who took the first set from Koellerer and seems to be holding his own, just held 5 all in the second.

p.s. Fred Gil is now up a break in the second, 5-3

I really wish i knew whether he has a website or not. dont see one listed on the atp website.

this seems very strange to me. he was doing very well at new haven, fought 3 hard sets before losing ....... then, he went out in the first round of the usopen ...... and now same thing today, first round of the BCR against a qualifier and on clay ..... wish i knew what's up with Igor!

Wow! Hanesku is falling apart lately; and in his home event. That is very sad! He got wiped by Soderling on Sunday in the DC 7-5, 6-1, 6-0. That surely didn't help his confidence. :(

that's a very good point ... hanesku may have needed more time to recover ........... but it's a shame because this is the second year in a row that victor hasnt been able to get out of the first round in front of his home country fans!

Romanian hopes now rest with the 18-year-old wild card Marius Copil and the 35-year-old veteran Andrei Pavel ......... Andrei Pavel is first up and Marius Copil is second up on Wednesday.

Andrei Pavel is playing Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay. Remember him from his run at Hamburg where he finally lost to PHM in the semifinals ... I liked his game a lot! :)

2heanih.jpg

this could be a good match, depending mostly on Pavel, I'm guessing, since he's been playing mostly doubles ... of course there's the age difference 23 for cuevas and 35 for pavel .... if cuevas is in the kind of form he was in hamburg, it c/b a short day for pavel ............. hoping there w/b a stream available somewhere @ 2 a.m. pacific time ......

oh yawn 4 hours from now and the Angels game isnt even over yet ...... boo hoo i'll set my alarm and see if I fall asleep before the Halos come back against ARod and the Yankees..... NY now holding onto a 1-run lead! bottom of the 8th and the Angels have the tying run on!

Greul beats Koellerer?

I guess when Greul plays really well (late 2nd and 3rd set vs Federer at US Open), he can be quite dangerous :)

But I still think Monaco will win the title.

Today was the first time I saw a stream, and all it showed was the center court, so I have yet to see Greul play, but obviously he's made it into the QF against Koellerer who managed to take a set from delPotro in the USO. Hopefully we'll get a chance to see his QF match against Argie M. Gonzalez, who's picking up steam as this tournament progresses.

I did manage to see Monaco against Riba today, and he was looking good. Pico's second set was quite strong, breaking Riba's serve twice early. Of course, Pere's not quite in Pico's class, and the results went pretty much according to ranking, Monaco @ no. 37, Riba at 157.

So there are two Argies into the QF, namely, Pico Monaco and Maximo Gonzalez. If they both win tomorrow, they'll meet in the SF.

Can you believe it? Since he won the USO, he's had his own parade, received the key to the City of Tandil, spoken to the masses from a balcony like Perone, and even made an appearance at Boca Juniors (as mentioned above by Gorecki) where he was given that shirt to wear (see pic above)! :D

And yesterday he turned 21 years old!
Happy B-Day, Juan Martin!!!!!

I agree Monaco looks good for this title, but tomorrow he faces Cuevas, the no. 8 seed, who made it to the semis on the clay of Hamburg. Their match is up first and should be quite a lively competition! :)

That's a lovely avatar pic LG.

I can't wait to see Del Potro playing again in Shanghaï.

How good is Del Potro in Indoor Events?

Can he beat greats like Nalbandian, Federer, Murray or Söderling?

To tell you the truth, the only times I know of that Delpo played on indoor hard last year were matches that occurred after Tokyo, which is where he cracked large toenail in his match w/Ferrer. He didnt have surgery to correct that injury until December after Shanghai TMC ......... but that stadium . . . apparently, they didnt open the roof last year, but do plan to do so this year, so that makes Shanghai outdoor hard! :D

2mr9ox5.jpg

"... From this year on, the tennis world sees a change as Shanghai hosts the inaugural Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 presented by Rolex. The tournament will be played as an outdoor event and that means the roof will remain open unless bad weather intervenes. ..." @
http://www.shanghaimasters1000.com/news/en/2009-08-28/23.shtml

#1. Nalbandian ... not playing shanghai this year.
#2. Federer ... as you know, uso outdoor hard.
#3. Soderling ... Delpo beat him twice in 2009 on outdoor hard.
#4. Murray ... Del hasnt beaten him on outdoor hard, but he was close in montreal, and i believe if they meet in shanghai, delpo will finally get that monkey off his back! :p
