Becker not coaching Rune at AO?

Looks like Becker is not coaching Rune instead taking on a pundit role at the AO alongside Kygrios .

Is he being ousted after Rune hired the additional coach? Seems a key tournament to be sitting out on.
Probably because the law of Australia.

All visa and citizenship applications in Australia require applicants to be of good character. The Department of Home Affairs (Department) states that you are likely to meet the character requirements if your visa application shows you have no substantial criminal record and good general behaviour.

But then how can he take on the pundit role?

From studio in some other country maybe.
From Munich. And Becker is still Holger's coach, as he reiterated on Sunday.

There's already a thread on this, but to repeat the info:

Boris isn't coming to Australia...

"Tennis legend Boris Becker will work for Eurosport during the Australian Open and will therefore not be able to look after his protégé Holger Rune on site. As the TV station announced on Monday, Becker will be one of the co-commentators at the first Grand Slam of the year and will analyze the events in the “Matchball Becker” program together with presenter Matthias Stach.

“We need Becker’s love and emotions,” Holger Rune’s mother Aneke Rune told SPIEGEL. Becker will not be able to convey this personally at the Grand Slam in Melbourne. Eurosport reports on the tournament from a studio in Munich-Unterföhring."

Can he go to Wimbledon this year with Rune or he must wait for 2025 ?

Well, this is surprising.

On Boris Becker in general, over Christmas I finally watched that Apple TV+ documentary...

I knew a lot about Boris Becker because he's always been fascinating to me. But I learned a few new things too.

He's lived a full life. A full and interesting life.

Boris Becker is awesome. :giggle:

Interesting though that she talks about "needing Becker's love and emotions" and not technical expertise, especially now that they hired Federer's coach.

I feel a bit sceptical but hope I am wrong.

No, it’s definite Boris can’t be at Wimbledon in 2024 or 2025. His daughter lives there and she recently confirmed again she visits him at his home in Italy because he’s banned from the UK for 3 years.
Damn, couple of divorces and Boris was forced to go to shady business deals to maintain his lifestyle, hence the debt evasion. I fear for young Zverev, he is already traveling the Darth Boris path.

Nobody was putting a gun to his head to force Boris to blow 185 million dollars on an obscenely opulent lifestyle. He'd already declared bankruptcy once and was given a sweetheart deal by German courts decades ago. But he didn't learn his lesson. Imagine blowing $185,000,000?! Boris's financial woes were all his own doing.

He used to spend $25,000 a night on hotel rooms when a perfectly luxurious suite could be had for $2,000. Read this for more:

That seems quite hypocritical, seeing how Australia was once a penal colony.

If you have been sentenced to prison for 12 months or more (whether it's served or suspended), your visa application to Australia is likely to be rejected.

"A person will not pass the character test if they have a 'substantial criminal record', as defined in subsection 501(7). For the purposes of the character test, a person has a 'substantial criminal record' if they have been: sentenced to death or to imprisonment for life. sentenced to imprisonment for 12 months or more."

Boris was sentenced to prison for 2.5 years. He only stayed in jail for 8 months, but "2.5 years" are the keywords here.

In the past a sentence of death could be avoided if the person concerned agreed to go to to Australia !

A British penal colony where convicts were freed and not sold as slaves!
You mean once they paid their debt to society they were allowed to integrate into the population as free citizens?

A criminal court somewhere has determined Becker has paid his debt to society and released him from incarceration. It just seems rich that of all places, Australia is denying entry based on criminal history.

Maybe Becker did not apply for an exemption? It is however infantile to suggest that Australia should let criminals in because it used convict labour until the mid 19th century.

Violent criminals and drug dealers, absolutely not. Becker is a white collar criminal.

I’m not defending Beckers actions just pointing out the hypocrisy here. Your govt used foreign criminals to build a nation.

This would not be the first time that Australian authorities have influenced their most prestigious tennis tournament.

The British Government used convict labour, and that's the same government that threw Becker in jail. And they were right to do so given that he is an incorrigible debtor.

Pretty women can spin brains of millionaires in no time and drain their pockets quite as fast. I must say Novak, Roger and Rafa are good examples how to have 100 of millions and have no problem at home.

I’m always bothered this is a thing in tennis (and maybe other sports). How can we expect commentators to deliver nonobvious insights when they aren’t even there?
True, some commentators are so good that they dont want to leave their country. Others are mediocre who travel all around the world to give themself prestige.
Robbie Koenig and Jason Goodall are great commentators.

Agreed, im surprised tbh because he had found the balance between mental peace and being disciplined and professional in no small part due to his coach and new manager (1995 onwards), but i guess his managers death and physical injuries derailed him completely. that being said, he was old enough to know right from wrong.

I am sure Becker is happy for an out with the brat.
