Beginner Serve Help Day 10 - New Tossing Motion

Goals for Today:

Toss the ball in a more right to left path across the baseline instead of tossing straight up in front of me.

Lessons Learned:

Overall, this is the tossing style that works for me so we need to keep doing that tossing motion over and over again until it becomes muscle memory

Still need to stay on edge just a tiny bit longer before pronating into the serve, though this is better than before when it was almost waiter's tray immediately after the drop...

Pronation needs to snap the racket more to the right instead of straight

Your toss is still too far out to the right. Your racquet arm elbow is in great position as you toss. Then, the first thing that happens after you toss, is the right elbow moves to the right to accommodate where you’ve incorrectly tossed the ball, so that at racquet drop you are in more of a throwing position than tennis serve position. Toss so that the ball would land next to your left foot. Maybe a foot out into the court toward the net. No swinging yet. Just practice the toss to hit that spot. Once you get that down, try hitting the ball in that location. It may not be the exact toss spot, but you need to quit rotating and having the racquet arm get in the wrong position before you swing. So far, all of your practice has put you in a position to fail. Until you quit doing what I have described, you won’t improve.

understood. I thought I was already tossing more left than before but now I know that I need to take it even further than I thought

Its another improvement. This swing is starting to clean up a little now.

One thing youre doing a little is hesitating halfway through the swing.

If you look at your swing at 36 seconds there is no hesitation and the swing should be like this. Thats the closest yet to how the swing should be done (albeit the ball toss was too far right).

You need to stop serving with your arm and start serving with your body. Watch the video with Rafa below, especially at 1:40 when he's throwing the ball (which he does ridiculously well for someone that probably never played a ball throwing sport) , and how much of the power comes from the rotation of the upper body which is then transferred to the arm. Your doing it all with your arm. The arm moves in response to the unwinding of the body core. You don't lift the arm, it's propelled forward by the body.

Also, see his half swings around 4:00, and try and mimic that motion and the snap he gets again propelled by his core. The shadow swing your are doing is not helping because you are stopping the motion right at the point of contact. At that point in the swing you should be fully committed and there is no stopping. Think about triggering the forward swing with your right shoulder, and let the arm lag behind until just right at impact.

For what it is worth, I recently found much greater rhythm and effectiveness with a toss in which the motion came from inside my front leg, vs in front of my front leg. This, plus abbreviating the backswing a little bit, is making things fall much better into place.

@will_ling_motivation one big issue with your shadow swings and actual execution of serves is slowing down here:

You compromise your key acceleration phase and try to forcefully accelerate with "pronation", which should accually be a release phase instead.
