Great Britain team delay Davis Cup final travel amid fears of terror attack in Belgium
GREAT BRITAIN'S Davis Cup team are expected finally to set out for the final in Belgium today after delaying their journey for 24 hours amid security concerns.
On Saturday, the British Foreign office advised that the Belgians had raised their security threat in Brussels to "very serious" - their highest level and shut down the city's metro system, cancelling a number of high profile football fixtures and concerts.

As a result of the anticipated chaos, British team captain Leon Smith decided to delay the team's planned departure yesterday, choosing to spend the extra day in London practicing together for the match that begins on Friday in familiar surroundings.
However, unless there is a specific threat to the contrary and the Belgium government advises otherwise, the plan is to head to Ghent today to begin preparations in earnest.

An LTA official said: "The team are very much looking forward to departing for Ghent, and, unless otherwise advised, we are determined to go to the final.
"The players and the captain thought it better, under the circumstances, to practise together here rather than off-site on a different surface there, and plan to practise on the match courts on site tomorrow.

"Ghent is still at Level 3 security, the same as London - and the same as the rest of Belgium, apart from Brussels, which is Level 4."
The International Tennis Federation has made its worry clear, with president David Haggerty stating: "We are aware that Belgium has raised the terror alert level for Brussels.

"This greatly concerns us but, at the present time, we are still continuing with preparations for the final."
Many supporters are also due to travel out to the match against Belgium, in which Smith's side are aiming to deliver Britain's first Davis Cup title since 1936.

l've been looking forward to this for awhile, still can't believe Britain have made it, it's been an epic rollercoaster of a ride.

Have to admit though, l don't think it should be going ahead. The issues in Belgium at this moment and the attacks they've stopped the last week are very worrying. The capital is on lockdown, they expect imminent threats.. holding a sporting event that the world will have eyes on is just asking for trouble imo.

If I had tickets I would be concerned about going, especially if staying in Brussels and travelling for the matches. But the rest of Belgium is on the same terror threat level as London so...

Team GB are now there and getting ready. If all goes well and it goes ahead as currently planned then will be ready to watch.

Yeah l saw Tim Henman was going to take his family, but has decided to watch from home.

Gent is 45 minutes from Brussels l believe, still too close to comfort for me. Feels like it's a risk and the lTF are saying as much, that's concerning.

l'm all for carrying on and showing we won't let them win (England v France at Wembley etc..), but this feels a bit reckless for me personally.

Normally I couldn't care less about the DC, but as the greatest country in the world is playing against Belgium, I may watch it.

4-1 to Team Murray. I fully expect Edmund to wallop Darcis too.

There will be visible armed police as well as plain clothes police officers in the crowd according to BBC news. Don't think I'd be able to relax in that atmosphere!

I'm really surprised, with the continuing terror alert in Brussels extended throughout the week, they are going ahead.

Going Belgium just because them having no votes is depressing. The Belgians shouldn't be written out of the doubles, they've won 2 of the 3 doubles matches at DC this year as have Great Britain.

Also it's to be played on clay. Before this year Murray had never even won a clay title. None of his DC matches this year were on clay either. Could that have a slight impact against Goffin? Perhaps drop a set?

IIRC the GB-USA tie in Glasgow was on indoor clay.

Correction, it was indoor HCs. I'm surprised GB didn't choose clay to negate the Isner/Querrey servbotting.

Edmund should get the pick, bit of a free hit anyway. The doubles is the priority. Hope he does, that way he gets to be a DC champion. (Inglot, Ward and Evans have already played and thus will be champions regardless of participation)

I would probably rest Darcis on Friday. Need him fresh for the doubles and a potential rubber 5. That is Belgium's only path to victory. Would be quite something if they pulled it off. With doubles you never know.

Also don't like the way GB are referred to as one man team or Murray winning it singlehandly. He hasn't and isn't. James Ward beat Isner to get through R1 and it is Jamie Murray having the year of his life and becoming a world class doubles player which has been crucial.

Rooting for Belgium. Would be epic. I love Davis Cup and Steve Darcis gave me a great day during my first trip to Wimbledon.

IMO Murray got this.
He has put so much effort into this, it would be a shame if he fails to capitalize. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Ferrer, Berdych, all of them have done it, he deserves it, too.

If GB win the DC I doubt that Murray would go on a tear in 2016, the only tearing he'd be doing would be tearing into his coaching team and his pregnant wife when he's losing in a match.

True but Wawrinka has a Davis Cup and IMHO Wawrinka might be remembered as the better player. Bigger wins. Murray can catch up to Stan in stature this wknd.

I think murray really wants to win but if it doesn't I don't think it will affect his career much at all... Murray is not really 10 major guy anyway,,,,he wil be lucky if he wins one more..........lol

it would be an upset of some magnitude.
The career implications for Murray are large.
Not really. Say he wins both his rubbers but loses the doubles or is exhausted and doesn't play and they lose that and the whole thing, not his fault and not a huge upset.

but when the dust settles upon history it looks very different. In the fullness of time when current promos fade we will look at wins in the biggest events.

disagree. Muarry is GOD in England and will be a knight soon. whereas stan is just a shadow of federer

well,, then Murray won Wimbledon ,,,that is big... and he is like only Scotsman to win in like 300 years of English history or something like that...

Harold Mahony, who won the title in 1896, was Scottish by birth although he was of Irish parentage and lived most of his life in Ireland.

Really not looking for an argument but Murray's 3 biggest wins have come at Wimbledon, The USO and the Olympics, where he beat Novak, Novak and Roger. In what way were Stan's wins bigger?

In fact bollocks to it - let's have the argument. So Murray can catch up with Stan's stature this weekend? Hmmmm. Leaving to one side the team nature of Davis Cup and therefore the utility of using DC to measure a player's stature, how can Murray be of a lesser stature than Stan when:

Stan has 11 titles and Murray has 35
Stan has 1 MS title and Murray has 11
Stan's highest YE ranking is 4, Murray's is 2
Stan is 12-51 against the Big 3, Murray is 26-51?

Again heninfan99 with the "Wawrinka has a better career than Murray" thing?

I'm going to agree with this guy if Wawrinka ends his career with more GS than Murray, that's it. I would agree with him right now if Wawrinka had 3 GS and Murray 2.

He has a way better record in slam finals than Murray of course, but both have 2 so far.. And in the other titles, Murray has 11 masters 1000 and Wawrinka only one.. Both won a gold medal (but I think the gold medal of Murray it's more important because it was in singles, meanwhile Stan won the gold medal in doubles with the best player of all time)

Murray has like what, 20 titles more than Stan?

Murray highest ranking was/is nº2 , Wawrinka best ranking was nº 3.

Then why Wawrinka's career is better than Murray's ?? Because of the DC?

I think even if Andy doesn't win the DC, he still will have a better career so far.
