Ben Shelton Press Conference | 2023 US Open Semifinal

ABCD

Hall of Fame

Revealing press conference.

At 2:19 Ben Shelton defined Djokovic as No2 player in the world. Imagine if he plays against Nadal (as an example) in AO2024 and refers to him as No130 player in the world. Should Djokovic, Nadal and Federer be anything else but Djokovic, Nadal and Federer? .

Going into to a match like without any expectations?? Just like any other player? Hello! What about doing your homework and at least set up a strategy?! Complete brain dead tennis from Ben….

His dad and coach was an ex pro. You think they went without any game plan?

I like his attitude. Give me that over some defeatist attitude that has already conceded the match to Novak before it even begins.

Not that I disagree, but

“HIT TO HIS BACKHAND” - Ben’s dad last night, at a volume so loud that Djoker could easily hear it

All night all the coaching was so audible, it was hilarious

Well nothing wrong with self belief I can agree on that but he certainly wasn’t able to back it up yesterday. Maybe next time…

The problem with great players is that they make it difficult to consistently impose your game plan while they can do it to you.

Does Ben have room for maturity in his game? Absolutely. Going for weaker first serves and huge second serves and double faulting against Tiafoe is not smart or what his dad would have said. At the same time that brashness and the audacity to take risks is what is going to make him even more dangerous once he dials it down just a little.

All this is still different from him going into the match not paying homage to Novak. Novak is an opponent and Shelton is not a fan. I don’t see anything wrong with that. If Fritz had that instinct he would have been a GS winner by now.

He has the type of brashness that I think will not sustain him well through extended periods of bad play. Like Fedehad an arrogance but he was humble enough to deal with setbacks like 08 and keep grinding back to the top. I can't see Shelton handling bad results well after tasting a little success.

Federer made remarks about Novak early on in his career that were not in good taste. Federer has made a lot of remarks about Murray as well. Federer also remarked how he was pretty talented as to why he was winning a lot. Novak and Nadal getting better humbled Fed.

Novak used to imitate other players, tears his shirt when he wins, mocks the crowd by eating grass and even yesterday using the hang up gesture to mock Shelton.

I am not saying I have any problems with any of this but let us not act as if the legends just humbly play the game and were never or never are arrogant to selectively single out Shelton just because he might be less talented.

Let me guess, they need JESUS.
It would obviously help. I'm not hugely religious but there is a direct correlation between the lawlessness, disrespect and all other problems in the world (Especially America) and the downfall of fundamental Christian religion and lack of ethics and morals instilled in the home. .. Thats obvious

I mean we saw what happened to Rome. We are headed towards a clear downfall in western society, You would have to be blind not to see it. Many places in America you can't set foot in there is so much lawlessness

No I'm saying it's a different type of arrogance.

I don't know. I'm just talking about the generation of kids today. No one can deny they are very rude, arrogant, disrespectful. Are people saying they aren't?
Here is a quote from Socrates-

The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

Things change, but they stay the same.

I don't mind arrogance, self-belief, any of that, the more characters this sport has, the better it will be for it.

what i found...i don't know, slightly off-putting, maybe, about shelton's remarks was the seeming obliviousness with regards to his own sport. "hasn't seen novak play?" maybe that was a joke but i wasn't getting sarcasm vibes. just a little weird, honestly. i mean, roger for sure had his moments earlier in his career especially, but like...he knew who rod laver WAS, idolized pete, edberg...shelton talks like he just landed on planet earth half an hour ago with a racket in his hand.

and again, fully willing to acknowledge it was a joke or whatever, but like...truthfully it didn't seem like one.

He is a high level pro with college experience and a pro team behind him. He knows fully well who the lowest ranked player he plays against is let alone Novak. I find it weird that someone would even think that he wouldn’t know. How does that thought even cross your mind?

Maybe you are right.

Not just Christianity, in general religion helps humans to have some morals and respect for people around them, thats why these religions were created in ancient times.
Absence of any form of religion and pure atheist mentality eventually leads to nihilism in society, total chaos. Selfishness takes over, everyone becomes so self centered that they lack empathy and respect for people around them and it gets worse with every generation. End result is anarchy.

because he said it?

The post-match interview with Brad on court after QF was the first time I couldn't explain away the cringe.
"Some might say clutch, but idk about all that". Dude you DF'd twice in a row serving for the set, absolutely no-one is saying it was clutch. Brads quick change of subject indicated he's a bit delusional.

because he said it?
You yourself said you were not sure if he was joking and yet said you didn’t think he was. That’s why I was asking how does the latter even cross your mind?

He is a high level pro. He and his team knows the strengths and weaknesses of players you have never even heard of let alone Novak who he must have seen countless times even before he dreamed of becoming a pro.

interviewer (paraphrase): was playing novak different than the player you've been seeing on tv for many years?

ben: i don't know about different. when i saw him on tv i was a little kid who maybe wasn't even playing tennis yet, or playing just for fun...i think i'm a completely different player now."

sorry but how do you square those comments? it's just...weird, like i said. i love his game and excited to see him play but again, just puzzling remarks.

back to the match though--i think he has one of the best service motions i've seen in a while, with incredible variety. and i love the fact he doesn't just go for the big bomb. but honestly it seemed like he was, for him at least, just spinning in a high percentage of serves...do you think maybe his arm was a little sore or something?

Please go outside and get some fresh air this weekend and turn off the doom mongering accounts for a day.

If you really feel that a high level pro doesn’t know much about Novak or his game then there is nothing one can say to help you. As I said I find it puzzling and even weird that someone would even think that way. No point going further with this.

Looks good to me. We want fearless youngsters. What do you want him to do? Fall at Djokovic's feet with an autograph book?

You know what the biggest problem with Shelton and all these new young guys for that matter? They are so focused on the "POSITIVE". Oh look what I did right. Just listen to him. Cannot win with that kind if attitude. Must be irate that you lost and realize the only real positive is winning and nothing else. He has to be fixated on the failure and burn inside awaiting for unadulterated revenge at all costs. Watch Djokovic's team when he's up two sets and a break and they are all miserable and worried as hell. Meanwhile at the same time, Shelton's team is overjoyed when he hits a winner and about to lose the match. Pathetic human beings.

Not just him and the lost gen but all the idiotic woke out there. They are so against being offended or looking at the negative. The world is going to regress more and more as this new age attitude is fostered in and accepted as the new normal.

Shelton should say and do whatever he thinks gives him the best chances of winning matches. Maybe minimizing the achievements of legendary players puts him in the right mindset to beat those players.

The good thing is we'll probably find out.

Wow. Calling someone as pathetic human beings because they didn’t publicly show how much the loss hurts them or cheered for a shot when their player was losing.

Let’s even accept your rationale and say that he doesn’t feel enough pain at losing. So what? Did he try his best on the court? If so that’s good enough. He might not become a legend but a lot of high achievers in different areas, not just tennis, have very churlish personalities due to their intense focus and aim to just be the best .

While the world is a better place because of those types of people and their contributions, the world is also a better place because not everyone is like them. If everyone was the same type we would have been extinct by now either by killing each other or by accepting the status quo and getting stuck in the stone ages.

You can't try your true best if you don't understand the pain of losing. If you are able to look at the positive and think you've tried your best and that's fine, then you haven't really tried your best. The best only manifests from torturous pain.

Come through and slay

What do you do? Are you the best at what you do? Are you or your folks pathetic human beings because they don’t understand the pain of being second best? If your argument is that you are not a pro at tennis, you are a pro at whatever you are getting paid to do. Are you the best at it?

And also the above devils advocate is just playing along with your speculation that the loss doesn’t hurt Shelton enough because of his post game demeanor. Which neither you nor I know. Some people use humor and other things to hide their emotions.

You mean like Seb Korda (who is by far the most talented American man) did with Rafa at the French Open a few years ago? Give me the delusional a hole any day. I mean, did anyone really prefer Sammy Hagar to David Lee Roth?

Yes, I'm the best.
