That was my thinking for awhile as well, but I don't see Korda really making improvements the last two years.
He was injured most of this spring...I think it was a wrist issue? So he's been working his way back most of this year. I expect good things from him next year...like not losing to someone ranked 200+ spots below you after winning the 1st set 6-0...

You know Vesely was ranked #528 when Seb lost to him at Wimbledon right ?

Yeah, but Vesely had been ranked in the top 50 for a while. The guy Fritz lost to had a career high of 192. And again...Fritz won the 1st set 6-0.

That's my biggest complaint about Fritz: He loses too may matches to people (on paper) he should beat fairly easily. I'm certain it's a mental thing, and he was doing a better job of over the summer hard court series, but seems to have dropped off the last few matches.

And yes, I know winning the 1st doesn't mean much if you don't win the last set. But if he wants to be the top American, he needs to finish off matches like that to send a message to the field. That's what Fed, Nadal, and Djoker did/have done so well: Take out the small fish convincingly, let the field know you're not messing around.

Damn, he just beat Paul again in Tokyo QF. up to 17 in the live rankings. Plays Giron in semis. A year ago he was 160 and lost to players ranked in the 300s in back to back weeks in challengers. Unreal rise in 12 months.
Much better footwork, much better return, much better court positioning, combine with some experience and some experience with winning or doing wonders for him. He’s one of the most exciting players to watch in quite a while.

I'm glad for this thread since I never heard of Ben before. But I agree, his slice is literally non-existent and his BH is just plain bad. He'll hover around a 100-125 ranking his whole career. Lousy movement too. Never will win even a 500. Or a 250.

Well, he just won a 500 in Tokyo. When this thread was made only 15 months ago, many were debating whether he would turn pro or return to collegiate tennis. Now he's ranked 14.

So where are all the haters claiming Ben would not win consecutive matches after the US open?

The guy is winning consistently, stopped over celebrating, so what's left to complain about?

Oh yeah, he's American. There's always that LMAO

We keep the receipts in this thread

Also big rematch tomorrow vs sinner

Don’t feel like dedicating a thread to it but: If he spends this off-season on a power/explosiveness centered regiment, and then obviously coordinates his game with the off-season changes, I think we will see Lukas Neumayer on tour a lot more next year. I can definitely see him becoming a legitimate ATP Tour caliber player. Not gonna be an Mpetshi Perricard type beat but an actual tour, company guy that will be popping in your tennistv highlights now and then as you eat breakfast or lunch or whatever. Which is a pretty good rise from World 200-something he is right now.

Also, on topic, looking forward to the Shelton runs this year

I liked Ben more when he was just a happy, smiling youngster. It seems his ego has grown a little more now. I hope he keeps that controlled and focus more on tennis. I've always thought he could be the best prospect from USA in the last 20 years but let's see if he can do the talk with his rackets rather than with anything else.

Why do you think power is what his training needs? To make him more consistent by requiring "less" to achieve what he is currently accustomed to?

Not playing too hot recently, best case probably going to be catching heat at Cincy then breaking some ground and losing a fight to a top four finisher pre-uso

Good stuff in here about the backhand, the serve philosophy and info he has alluded to in the past but also interesting how he approaches it if you’re unaware

3 3 setters all decided in the breaker. His matchup with Nakashima is becoming a really good, underrated one. Even if he owns the H2H. I consistently enjoy the tennis. Second set in the desert this year was lacking but definitely one under the radar to circle on tournament schedules imo.

After watching him in person every year for several years now, when I went to Wimbledon this year the first thing that stood out is that he is HUGE now. I mean a marked physical difference from before. Legitimately shocking. I was sitting Court 2 top half of the stadium and even from that distance I couldn’t believe it

how much do you think he weighs?

Beating an in-form Fritz and Khachanov back to back is quite impressive actually, I didn't expect him to win in Canada. Will have to watch at least the highlights (I guess he was serving perfectly in the Khachanov match judging by the score), but kudos to him.
More patient rallying than you might expect (plenty of sliced backhands) and well-timed approaches. A really well played match.

I wish you were still around to see that Ben become a better tennis player than Holger Rune!
:-D
