Benchmark bumped mid-year??

I have a question that has probably been answered 100 times but I don't want to comb the archives.

If a player has a "benchmark" ntrp rating for league play and is having great results, can they be bumped (or DQd) during the league season? My understanding is that if you are in the computer and labeled "benchmark" with a couple years in that division, you can only be bumped up in the year-end ratings. Is that right? Thanks

No the USTA keeps it a secret to prevent players and captains from trying to manipulate their ratings.

We had a benchmark 3.5 in our league last year. She went 20/3 at 3.5, and an amazing 12/3 at 4.0. She was never DQ'd.

You once were able to see your dynamic rating if you tried to appeal. It was in the source code on your confirming e-mail. I think USTA caught the glitch and removed it....it was discussed in a TW thread back when year-end ratings came out...(btw, it worked.)

Yah the USTA fixed that within a day or two of the thread being posted-lol.

I believe Computer rated "C" category players can be DQed anytime during the year. The only difference is DQ does not change their previous results (of the matches played till then).

No they cannot be DQ'd at all.

If you read the new rules for 2009 C and B can't be dynamic DQ. So no computer DQ's based on win/loss. The only way I can see them being DQ'ed is through a grievance filing. Are there any other types of DQ I am missing besides those 2?

I think grievances only apply to self-rates. So I think once you are C or B rated, you are immune.

There are three types of grievances:

General (Player conduct, on court issues)
Administrative Grievance (Eligibility, procedures)
Self Rate.

DQ'd as in banned from participation completely or as in bumped to a higher level mid-year? I don't see how a C or B rated player would get DQ'd because of an improper rating.

I think we are talking about two different things. I was just postulating how B and C players could get DQ'ed. They are only exempt from dynamic DQs. Administrative and general DQ's would most likely result banned from playing for a specified period of time type of DQ's rather than rating bumps.

He got a call less than 2 months after the midseason bump saying he was dq'd from all 3.0 events. He was not allowed to accompany his mixed team in playoffs and not allowed to play any 3.0 tournaments. In fact his last 3.0 tournament his results were removed like he never played in it.

The new rule states Computer Rated Players will not be bumped mid-season. There was a huge fire at the 2007 Texas Sectional when 2 Computer Rated Players were DQ'ed after Pool Play, costing one team a trip to the SF.

Great. Now all ringers have to do is register play a couple of "competitive" matches and then sandbag away to glory the next year.

I think some people take USTA tennis way too seriously.

If someone wants to waste an entire year of league play by holding back in order to generate a computer rating so they can dominate the next year, that is pretty lame.

On the flip side, if someone is so concerned with every player being truly skilled at the level in which they are playing that they will file grievances and just rant on and on about it, then they are equally as lame.

I don't see why winning USTA league championship events would be so important to make such a big deal about it. There is no prize money, there is very little recognition other than some thumbs up within your local tennis community.

Its fun to win a championship but its not worth all the cheating and whining that goes on over this stuff.

What you are describing is by far more the exception than the rule. Most players are within the correct level. Why is it the end of the world if you do face an opponent who is out of level? Even when someone is in the correct level, they can be in the zone one day and still bagel their opponent and then be accused of being a sandbagger.

All depends on your approach to the game. Not every match should be close or competitive. If you are on the receiving end of a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing you can still have a good time by pushing the limits of your game, having your weaknesses exposed. It can be very instructional. An occasional beatdown is good once in awhile. Of course if you get them all the time then it would be depressing, but then you are probably at the wrong level.

IMO if you want only competitive matches or close scores don't play USTA tennis. Pick and choose who you play among your friends, club members, ect. Otherwise play whomever is front of you on the other side of the court and don't whine about it.

Any given player (who loses against this guy) will still have a majority of their matches being reasonably competitive. Non-competitive matches will always happen even if players like this are eliminated from competition.

In my opinion, the USTA has done a good job of keeping league play competitive and they will never prevent every sandbagger unless they micro-manage every single team, which they don't have the resources to do nor should they. It is increasingly more difficult to combat sandbagging at the championship events because captains will go to real extremes to beat the system. Unless you are on one of these teams, your best bet is to just enjoy the competition and play your best.

I am a 3.0B but have been playing 3.0 and 3.5 this year (all doubles). I am 5-0 at 3.0 and 7-1 at 3.5. I understand that I can't be DQ'd but when planning for the rest of the year, Mixed and Combo, can I assume that I will be rated 3.0 all year? Or can I still be bumped mid-year?
