If I was a pro I wouldn't play Davis cup. If it doesn't offer points then why bother?

This is so stupid by Benneteau that I honestly have no idea what to say.

If Benneteau reaches a tournament final, his final opponent should be given a title immediately.

I am sure Nishikori played the Davis Cup plenty of times before, hardly anyone participates regularly. Benneteau making a fuss over nothing really.

Yeah, pretty much. History tells us that finals featuring him don't even have to be played.

He'll always have the FO doubles title though. I wonder what pressed Benneteau to say this?...

Davis Cup is such an antiquated concept at this point. What's the point of it really? It can't be bragging rights for the country that wins it because most of the top players don't even play it anymore. It's an absolute joke. "Oh look, my country is the best at something, I'm so proud I could cry." Give me a break. All it is, is an excuse to get obnoxious all in the name of "nationalism."

Odd that he should go for Nishikori. Don't see him having a go at his buddy Federer or the other top players who regularly skip. No one should be punished for skipping Davis cup. It shouldn't be tied to Olympic Games representation either. If players don't want to play then fine.

On the other hand, I'm fed up with this idea that because the top players don't want to play the Davis Cup then it doesnt count for anything. It's indicative of a wider problem with the sport than anything that doesn't involve the top 10 is worthless. Davis cup is a great competition. I love watching the Brits play whether Murray junior is around or not.

Hahahaha! Bit odd to have a go at Kei of all people - it's not like he's never played DC before

Nishikori's response: "mate, win a final and then get back to me."

If he gets asked about it, I'll be disappointed if he doesn't take a dig back - always fun to see a bit of shade getting thrown around like they do on the women's tour

I agree with most people here about DC but give me a break about Olympics - you cannot choose the moment to play for your country. Either you have the compromise or not - not only when you are interested. For me is GREAT that Olympics are tied to DC representation. You want to go there? Show you want to represent your country first!

Where is this 250 event that Benneteau thinks Nishikori has skipped DC for? His next scheduled event is Barcelona. I'm more puzzled why he is skipping Monte Carlo!

No. But I have seen many outlets reporting his general slamming of Nishikori for skipping the France Japan tie.

Why Benneteau is addressing to Kei? Kei's (12 ties played) peers Milos (11). Dimitrov(14)
Nonsense as best of 2 sets, and neutral venue for Finals will finaly destroy DC

Maybe if Japan could produce a 2nd top 10 player he'd consider going for a DC title. As it is, he has no real incentive to do more than 1 tie a year.

I would be competing for myself, not my country. I really don't care about national representation in sports.

Almost all the top guys haven't played DC this year... Fed/Wawa didn't play, Nadal didn't play, Murray didn't play, Nishikori skipped it, Milos missed it, etc. The only top guy who played was Djokovic, and really I suspect that's because he lost early in Australia, Acapulco and IW, and then skipped Miami.

It definitely is a lower priority than it was....however, the guys like winning it undoubtably. In the first 1/2 of the 20th century it was regarded as a defacto major. I don't like including it though in ranking lists of greats - because it is a team competition - whereas I am rating singles play.
