One round of 16 matchup in Cincinnati features 2 players who have been struggling lately, Nikolay Davydenko and Tomas Berdych.
Since a pretty good Wimbledon, on his clearly worst surface (round of 16 result) Davydenko has had a very dissapointing summer. He lost 4 of his 5 matches, in his first 4 tournaments back, three first round losses, one second round loss. Finally in Canada he started got a decent showing, including win over Youzhny, before falling the quarters to Stepanek. As usual he is the tours energizer bunny, playing an incredible number of tournaments in a short time span.
Berdych has seemingly been quiet since Nadal deflated his balloon big time at Wimbledon. With the talk of his being a potential finalist at Wimbledon, he of course suffered a smackdown from a charged up Nadal in the quarters. Whether that took any wind out of his sails or not is hard to say, but since that dissapointment he has lost 6-0, 6-3 to Lopez in Stuttgart, and then was upset by Robin Haase in his first match in Canada.
Neither player has seemed that convincing or strong in this event so far either. Davydenko is 5-0 vs Berdych however, 4 of the 5 matches on hard courts, all matches since 2005, so a pretty good indicator I think how these two matchup.
